Harley Pasternak's No-Gym Tips

Harley Pasternak, FITNESS advisory board member and celebrity trainer shares his top tips to staying fit outside of the gym.

My name is Harley Pasternak and I am talking to you today. One of the most beautiful gyms that I've ever been to were here in New York, and for those of you that have read my books and you've heard me-- heard me talk about my desire to stay out of the gym as much as possible, you'll know that I tell all my clients to take at least 10,000 steps a day, some of them more, some of them less, with the goal of being active from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed. All of my clients put a little FitBit into their pocket that counts how much they move throughout the day, but still know when they haven't moved enough. In that way, you won't be injuring yourself, you won't be able to exceed your appetite by doing all really intense forms of cardio and if you like, but you don't need to do them. And as long as you're doing some resistance training, that's still important, you can do it at home, you've got a pair of hand weights. It's not something that requires a gym to do. That means that if you like the social aspects of being in a gym, if you have any specific needs that require specific equipment, i.e., if you're an athlete or if you've got certain injuries that you might wanna come to the gym. But for the rest of you, I just want you to know you don't have to go to the gym. And if you like but you don't need to be active from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed, have a little FitBit or a little pedometer, and eat well. That's all you need.
