I loved the pear almond oatmeal! I used Bob's Red Mill rolled oats and took a shortcut by using the Dole fruit bowls for the pear. I now make this for myself on the weekends as my AM breakfast treat. So good!
In the Fitness magazine, the recipe calls for steel cut oats instead. It was the first time I ever tried them and I loved them!!! It does take longer to cook, but it is definitely worth it. 1/4 cup of dry steel cut oats cooked then add the other stuff. I used half of the medium pear, 2 tsp of honey, and 1 Tbs of slivered almonds and mixed together. DELICIOUS!!! And only 285 calories for the whole bowl!!
I always thought that "quick-cooking" regular oats were the same thing as "instant" oats. This will work fine with any oats you have on hand, be it an instant packet or the old-fashioned canister oats. I use packets of plain organic instant oats a lot, simply for the time-saving plus less cleanup. I see nothing wrong/unhealthy with using plain organic instant oat packets, so long as you don't load 'em up with sugar or artificial sweeteners. I use fruit (blueberries and/or bananas) to add flavor.
I agree with the instant oatmeal. Regular oats, even quick cooking, are healthier, as they are less processed. Also, even full price, a canister of the oats is cheaper and healthier. Adding fruit to oatmeal? Not new. I add frozen blueberries to mine, while the oats are still in the pot so they thaw and melt and the "juice" gets into the oats as well. The nuts sound good, though.
This recipe is awesome! It is quick and easy, tastes great and really fills me up. I do use 1/2 cup of the old fashion rolled oats and 1/2 cup unsweetened soy milk, then I add a little cinnammon for flavor. Love it!!
