We skip the ice cubes and simply freeze our bananas (cut in half). We get the discounted bananas that have brown spots - since they're truly rip, peel and freeze immediately. They're always available for a smoothie and they're super cheap! You can also buy fresh bananas and wait for them to ripen, then freeze. We also use soy milk and either a dash of vanilla extract, or vanilla flavored soy milk. We also call it "Chunky Monkey" or if using choc soy milk - "Chocolate Chunky Monkey".
