Q. Is it better to buy local or organic food?
A. They're both good choices. Food that's not local travels an average of 1,500 miles to your plate, losing nutrients and wasting fuel in the process, while conventionally grown produce contains pesticides and fewer antioxidants. To find local and organic food, shop the farmer's market. You may not see the USDA Organic seal on products, so ask the farmer if he uses chemicals, growth hormones, or antibiotics. If the answer is no, those apples or eggs are good for you and the planet.
