When an early business meeting is on the calendar, or that infamous 3:00 p.m. slump rolls around, a lot of us tend to reach for our coffee cups for a quick pick-me-up. But a recent trend in java offers more than just an afternoon buzz for coffee drinkers. While coffee is already a natural source of antioxidants, several brands have begun kicking things up a notch by adding even more antioxidants to their roasts. Some sources indicate increasing antioxidants like beta-carotene and vitamin E can result in too much of a good thing, but at the very least, this is an intriguing new way to take your vitamins. Below, we’ve rounded up three brewers bringing more than just beans to their beverages.
Green Mountain Coffee Roasters: Wellness Brewed
The Vermont-based company spent two years developing a collection of K-Cups with added antioxidants, including the “Antioxidant Blend,” which adds Vitamins C and E, and the “Focus Blend” with an added 50mg of L-Theanine (an amino acid usually associated with green tea). Josh Kaplan, Brand Manager at Green Mountain, says “starting with small, smart additions – like adding vitamins C and E to your coffee – enables our consumers to integrate wellness into their daily routine in a delicious way.”
Hawaii Coffee Company : Pure Choices
Lion Coffee, a brand under the Hawaii Coffee Company umbrella, offers a double dose of daily antioxidants in its new line of Pure Choices coffees. The brand partnered with KonaRed Coffee Fruit, a supplier of coffee cherries (the fruit that surrounds the coffee bean). They converted the coffee cherries into an enhancement and then added the antioxidant-rich supplement back into the brew. Try the French Roast or Vanilla varieties next time you’re jonesing for a cup.
The Healthy Bean
Rather than using the coffee cherries to enhance the antioxidants already found in coffee, The Healthy Bean brand adds compounds found in acai berries, pomegranates, blueberries and green tea into their organic brews. According to their website, the coffee has the antioxidant effect of three cups of green tea. Sometimes big gifts really do come in small packages.
