Look & Feel Fresh—Fast!

Written on January 26, 2011 at 7:13 am , by

Staying fresh and put together during a marathon, time-crunched day can be a challenge—but not to worry, FITNESS is here to help! Here are a few of my favorite ways to look and feel great on the go, no matter what my busy schedule has in store:

  • Hydrate your face. Rehydrate your skin in a dry, stuffy office or classroom with a mist of purified water. We like Evian Mineral Water Spray; it releases a light, invigorating mist that won’t disturb your makeup. Or fill a spray bottle with water and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil for an even more moisturizing, therapeutic treat.
  • Beat the tangles. All that running around can leave your hair a tangled mess. Carry a compact brush with mirror that folds to fit in your bag- we love Sephora Collection Printed Pop-Up Brush, decked in a supercute bee pattern. Just running the brush through locks a couple times can bring them back to life; to add volume, brush the roots up and back.
  • Freshen up. It seems simple, but one of my favorite ways to feel refreshed is to brush my teeth—something about the clean feeling gives me an ultimate boost. I keep a travel toothbrush and toothpaste in my purse for a mid-day touch up. On days when I’m really crunched for time, I pull out a Colgate Wisp, a miniature toothbrush with built-in paste.

Tried-It Tuesday: Get Shine-Free Skin

Written on December 7, 2010 at 6:01 am , by

It’s no secret that I have an oily complexion. It seems like the more I try to fight it, the worse it actually gets. Instead of battling it with harsh chemicals and rubbing alcohol, I’ve learned a few tricks along the way to work with my slick skin:

Moisturize- Never skip the moisturizer. If you skimp out on moisturizer your skin actually produces more oil because it’s thirsty. We like Origins Zero Oil moisturizer with Saw Palmetto & Mint. It’s super-lightweight and hydrating, with a hint of salicylic acid to instantly reduce shine.

Go oil-free- Look for foundations and powders that are free of added oils that can build up on top on your already oily skin. I like MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation. It goes on smooth and the result is a matte look that helps minimize the appearance of oil.

Blot away- To get rid of excess oil during the day, I never leave the house without blotting sheets. My favorite are Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets. They soak up the oil without smudging your makeup—and they’re compact enough to fit in your pocket, which is great for the on-the-go girl!

Cold Weather Beauty Treats

As the shops in New York City start filling their windows with festive decorations, cold air is creeping in, too. These beauty treats keep us hydrated on chilly days (and the delicious scents are a calorie-free bonus!):

draft_lens2324152module17040252photo_1235237469KurigcoffeeChapstick Lip Balm in Cool and Soothing Peppermint: This twist on the classic lip balm seals in moisture with a cooling sensation and prevents chapping. Plus, the it smells and tastes like peppermint, so it instantly freshens breath.

Lumene Spa Repairing Body Butter: This formula is ultra-creamy and has a refreshing citrus scent. I use it at night before bed, and wake up with smooth, silky skin. The formula is light enough to wear during the day, too.

Serendipity 3 Frrrozen Hot Chocolate Foot Cream: This is my guilty pleasure after a long day at work. The rich cream has the aroma of Serendipity’s famous hot chocolate, plus peppermint oil to relieve feet after a day of pounding the pavement.

What are your favorite beauty indulgences for brisk days?

Tried-It Tuesday: Damage Control

Written on November 2, 2010 at 9:27 am , by

When I visited my hometown in Texas this past weekend,  I made an appointment to see my hairstylist, Jessica Broome of Headquarters in Kaufman, to switch up my fall style. After coloring my hair, she took me to the sink and started raving about a new shampoo and conditioner she has fallen in love withTIGI Bed Head Urban Antidotes Shampoo & Conditioner. They come in levels 1, 2 & 3 depending on the condition of your hair. She recommended level 3, Resurrection, for me because I use bleach in my hair, making it more brittle than most. Level 1, Re-Energize, is for those of you with normal hair that just needs a little pick-me-up. Level 2, Recovery, is right in the middle—damaged, but not yet at intervention point.

“I have styling products that I know are great, like CHI Keratin Mist, but this is the first shampoo that I can honestly say I recommend,” Broome said. Her hair felt and looked fantastic, so I knew I had to try it. She used it to wash and condition my hair, and even after getting highlights, my hair felt much softer and more manageable than prior to my visit. Bonus: It smells wonderful, too! What’s your favorite shampoo and conditioner for damaged hair?

Get Undone

Written on September 22, 2010 at 9:33 am , by

Changing of seasons brings a changing of trends. My favorite for fall? The 90s grunge look shown by designers like Alexander Wang (Fall 2010) and worn by celebrities including Emma Roberts and Drew Barrymore. The undone-on-purpose look is classic and edgy; that’s exactly what I love about it! Unlike most extravagant styles done on the runway, this one is doable at home (and is super-easy to execute after a workout).  To get this look you’ll need a brown eye shadow with orangey tones, like Urban Decay Deluxe Eye Shadow in Heat, and an eyeliner that smudges easy, like Maybelline Line Express Eyeliner in Ebony Black, which comes with a built in smudging end. Dust a bit of tawny bronzer on cheekbones and finish with a matte lip balm. Bonus: This is a perfect opportunity to give your hair a break and let it dry naturally. Would you try the messy-chic look?
