For the 5th year in a row, hairstylist Julien Farel, owner of Julien Farel Salons in New York City and Cabo San Lucas, is courtside styling the hair of the U.S. Open athletes. Farel has managed to give the female players glamorous yet practical hairstyles for their matches. We got the scoop on this year’s most-requested look:
FITNESS: What’s the hottest hairstyle for female players at this year’s US Open?
Julien Farel: “Long braids, either loose or fishtail. Braids allow you to have a ‘look’ without trying too hard. They are very popular with the players from Eastern Europe because it allows them to have a great hairstyle—soft waves full of body compared to their normally fine hair—for interviews after matches.”
FITNESS: How can we do the styles at home?
JF: “For the loose braid, take three separate sections and braid from side-to-side down the back of your neck.”
FITNESS: What makes this style great for playing sports?
JF: “It gives you a great style that is still tight and out of your face. It also protects your hair from the sun.”
FITNESS: Does this style translate to the gym and everyday exercise?
JF: “Absolutely! Braids are more attractive than the average ponytail; they are more glamorous. If you aren’t running heavily, you can allow your braids to be looser and softer. They are also perfect for going out after the gym because once you take your braids out you have perfect beach waves.”
FITNESS: What players have you done this style on?
JF: “Jelena Jankovic, but others will follow.”
Channel your inner athlete and spice up your workout hair by ditching the pony and sporting a stylish-yet-functional braid!
