A few months back, we were lucky enough to choose, name, and get an exclusive advanced launch of a lipstick from Make Up For Ever’s Rouge Artist Natural line of hydrating, sheer, easy-to-wear lip colors. First, the Beauty Department narrowed 50 shade options down to a single skin-brightening, looks-great-on-all red. Then, staffers brainstormed countless ideas for names and we conducted a vote to come up with the winner: FITNESS Red-y, Set, Go!, which reflects both the dynamic, active nature of the magazine and the vibrant, universally-flattering crimson hue. Check out the shade, right, and the full story on page 39 of our November/December issue, on newsstands today. Pucker up!
Order Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Natural in #45 FITNESS Red-y, Set, Go! ($19) by calling 877-757-5175; look for the rest of the collection (50 shades total) in stores this spring.

Makeup shaped into pretty pebbles and pearls has been popping up everywhere recently—and it’s easy to see why. Not only do these faintly shimmery bronzer, blush, and highlighting powders give cheeks a gorgeous glow when applied with a brush swirled over the multi-tonal pigments, but they can also multitask. We’ve experimented with using individual beads as eye shadow, lip color (topped with gloss or balm), and luminizer on the inner corners of eyes, under the brows, and on the cupid’s bow. They’re just plain fun to use, like makeup should be! Here, a selection of showstopping spheres:
Tell us: Have you played with pebble-shaped makeup? If so, how did you use them and what did you think?

Perhaps it’s because NYC has had a string of sunny, 70-degree weather this past week, but right now I’m obsessed with beauty products that help extend your summer glow. My newest fave: MAC Cosmetics Optical Bronzer. By pairing a golden bronzer with sheer fuchsia blush, this compact makes your skin look healthy, warm and glowing. With an angled blush brush, simply sweep the powder on the apples of your cheeks, then dust it down into the hollows for an I-just-did-cardio radiance. An added bonus: The ultracool zig-zag pattern is artsy and just plain fun to have in your makeup bag!
Tell us: Do you prefer bronzer, blush or both?

Even as the temp starts to cool and fall dawns upon us, running around through your daily routine can make anyone’s makeup go into meltdown mode. Prepare for these sticky situations by investing in a makeup finishing spray, mists made with special polymers that are meant to keep pigment in place on your face. We put two popular options to the test.
The Promises: These spritzes claim to prolong the lasting power of your makeup, resulting in fewer touch-ups.
The Winner: Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix was true to its word and kept our makeup looking perfect. Be sure to hold the bottle half an arm’s length away from your face, though, because the nozzle delivers a powerful application. One spritz will last you all day!
The Runner-Up: Skindinavia 10 Years Younger Makeup Finish made our makeup a bit cakey, which is especially hazardous for women with oily skin who already have trouble keeping their makeup in place. Try this if your skin is on the drier side; if you’re oily, avoid it.

We all get stuck in situations where we need makeup help—fast. Primp on the fly with these genius tips from Koh Gen Do Cosmetics celebrity makeup artist Daniel Martin:
- Mixing your concealer with face cream or lotion can double as a light foundation/tinted moisturizer.
- In a pinch, use your lipstick as a cream blush—make a few small dots on each cheek, then blend.
- Dab a balm like Aquaphor on your eyelids for a glossy, natural-looking sheen.
- No eye shadow in sight? Swipe a powder bronzer or neutral blush on eyelids for a chic, monochromatic look.

FAIR: You can pull off a bright pink, such as cult classic NARS Semi-Matte Lipstick in Schiap.
MEDIUM/OLIVE: Go for a juicy tangerine or coral hue like Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture in (13) Le Orange.
DARK: Choose a brown-based brick red such as Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Burnt Red.
Most important of all: Find a hue you truly love, and you’ll have the confidence to rock it. And remember to turn down the volume on the rest of your face (read: keep your eye and face makeup neutral), since you want your lips to be the star. What’s your favorite bold lip look?

Makeup primers may seem like just another tiresome step in your primping routine, but the skin-perfecting and makeup-maintaining benefits make them worthwhile for many. Here’s our—well, primer—on primers:
- Face: Using a foundation primer like the Laura Mercier Foundation Primer as the last step in your routine before makeup acts like an undetectable spackle, filling in any crevices or imperfections so makeup goes on smoothly. Face primer also helps makeup stay on for as long as possible. There are versions of foundation primer that also treat and/or mask specific skin issues like acne, redness and dullness.
- Eyes: Using an eye primer, such as Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, before applying your favorite shadow or liner will provide you with an even, neutral canvas so the color goes on true, and prevents pigments from disappearing, migrating or creasing.
Are makeup primers part of your routine? If so, what are your must-haves?
