Tousled Waves

Tired of playing it straight? "Rumpled, bed-head spirals look sultry for summer," says Allen Ruiz, owner of the Jackson Ruiz Salon in Austin, Texas. Modernize your curls by contrasting them with a sharp center part. Simply divide damp strands down the middle a few inches toward your crown, then comb the rest straight back to create flattering volume.

Tousled Waves How-To: Step 1

Enhance texture. To make clean, damp strands look piecey, massage a dollop of sculpting mousse -- we like lightweight Dove Curl & Sculpt Defining Mousse ($2.98, drugstores) -- from roots to tips.

Tousled Waves How-To: Step 2

Do the twist. Divide your hair into five to seven sections and braid each one. Twist each braid into a small bun, secure it with an elastic and spray the roots with a volumizer, such as John Frieda Luxurious Volume Lavish Lift Root Booster ($6.50, drugstores).

Mess things up. After about 10 minutes, unfurl the buns and -- voila! -- ruffled, sexy spirals. Finger comb your ends with a pea-size dab of texturizer, like Redken Matte Sponge Rugged Texturizer ($17, redken.com).

An Undone Bun

Time to let loose! "A windswept chignon keeps your neck and back cool but still looks dressy enough for evening," says Donna Fumoso, a stylist in New York City who created the looks on these pages without using a single hot tool. The key to keeping this bun chic: location, location, location. Placed on the nape of your neck, it's sophisticated.

An Undone Bun How-To: Step 1

Get grip. Create hold by running a styling lotion, like Tresemme Fresh Start No-Frizz Creme ($4.99, drugstores), through damp hair from roots to ends. Then let your strands air-dry for about 10 minutes, or overnight if you want to save time.

Sweep it up. When your hair is dry or just slightly damp, flip your head upside down and spritz a texturizing spray, such as Tigi Love, Peace & the Planet Totally Beachin' Body & Waves Styling Mist ($16.95, tigihaircare.com), scrunching the product in with your fingers. Next, twist your hair into a bun that rests right above your shoulders. To secure it, tuck bobby pins into the base.

Lock in height. Pull up the top front pieces to loosen them and mist with a hair spray -- try Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray ($26, aveda.com) -- for volume.

Sexy Side Braid

Instead of a ponytail (which screams "Bad-hair day!"), try a playful side braid as your new go-to style to keep your hair off your face. "It's the perfect way to control overgrown bangs or layers that won't stay put," Fumoso says. Strands are harder to work with when they're squeaky clean, so try this look on days you skip the shampoo. And don't stress if you have a couple of flyaways: The messier, the better!

Sexy Side Braid How-To: Step 1

Smooth it over. Prep hair by applying a frizz-taming cream, such as Pantene Pro-V Medium-Thick Hair Style Straighten & Smooth Creme ($5.99, drugstores), to the bottom half of damp hair.

Sexy Side Braid How-To: Step 2

Braid away. Starting in the middle of the back of your head, braid strands to one side, keeping the plait as close to your head as you can (otherwise it won't lie flat). Secure with a small elastic. Give hair glossiness by blasting it with a shine spray, like Salon by Sally Hershberger Smooth Fix ($24, hsn.com).

Make it last. To create lift, coax up the front layers with a comb. Mist hair spray, like Garnier Fructis Style Full Control Anti-Humidity Hairspray ($4.11, drugstores), all over.
