Going to the Olympics is a dream for athletes — and, well, non-athletes — across the world. And while that dream is a long shot for most, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), alongside national gym chain 24 Hour Fitness, wants to make it more of a ~potential~ reality for everyday athletes.
It all starts this Saturday, June 24, when anyone can go to a local, participating 24 Hour Fitness club and sign up to participate in the first round of athletic auditions. Athletes will be tested at six different stations to measure their strength, mobility, and endurance. Exercises like the 30-meter sprint, 10-meter sprint, broad jump, vertical jump, squat, and performance on the Watt bike will all be assigned, and after you bust through each one, the top 50 men and 50 women in the country will advance to round two. (Get psyched with some Olympians' favorite motivational quotes or go-to pump-up songs.)
If you're selected to move forward, you'll be shipped off to a five-day training camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. There, you'll face the same physical and mental challenges that Team USA athletes face every day as they prep for the Olympic Games. One man and one woman will be selected to proceed to the National Team Training Camps for each sport — track cycling, bobsled, skeleton, and rugby — and the eight winners will be eligible to receive financial, training, and medical support, just like any other Team USA athlete. (Get the inside scoop on what it's like to compete in cycling or skeleton, straight from an Olympic athlete.)
As if that doesn't sound cool enough on its own, competitors may also have their journey televised on Scouting Camp – The Next Olympic Hopeful, a documentary that will be shown in August on the NBC Sports Network.
So, are you ready to compete for your Olympic dreams? Find a participating 24 Hour Fitness location near you and register to test your skills this Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm. May the odds — and the Olympic dream — be ever in your favor.
