Lindsay's Fitness Routine

Lindsay Price hates labels, except when it comes to being called fit. She hits the gym at least four times a week, in addition to running, hiking, surfing, and biking. "I'm not the kind of girl who picks up a couple of dumbbells and lightly jogs," Lindsay, 32, says. "I push myself constantly — and I have the sweat stains to prove it!" She admits, though, that she was nervous when FITNESS asked her to be on the cover. "Even though I'm in shape, the idea of my picture on the magazine under the word fitness was daunting," Lindsay says. "But I saw it as a challenge." Here, she fills us in on her kick-butt secrets.

You sometimes exercise at 4:30 a.m. What's your motivation trick?

It's not easy. I make a nonnegotiable deal with myself every week that I'll get up four out of five days to hit the gym. I don't have a 20-year-old's metabolism anymore, so I know I need to put in the work if I want to continue to do what I love, which is act. If that's not motivation, I don't know what is.

What's your favorite workout?

I go to Pulse Fitness Studio's Tread & Tone classes in Sherman Oaks, California, where I do 30 minutes on the treadmill, then 30 minutes of circuit training. Trainer Mark Harari will tell me when to raise or lower my incline and my speed on the treadmill so that I get optimum fat burning. One day I'll work on my back and arms; the next, my abs. I also surf. Lugging the board is a workout in itself. But it feels more like fun than exercise.

What's your top fitness goal?

To run a marathon. I trained three years ago for the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego. I was up to 23 miles, but I injured myself before the race. It's heartbreaking to put in that amount of time on something and not be able to complete it.

Working out with your boyfriend, Josh Radnor [star of How I Met Your Mother]: a do or a don't?

I think it's great if you surf, hike, or bike as a couple. Hitting the gym with a significant other is not my thing. I see it as work, and I wouldn't take my boyfriend to the office with me.

What fitness move is pure torture?

The worst has to be biceps work — I feel like I'm going to throw up every time I do it. I might forget to breathe, or maybe the burn just makes me woozy, but it never fails. My trainer backs up just in case and jokes, "Do I need to get the barf bag?"

On Body Image and Booty Envy

On Lipstick Jungle, you played a sexy fashion designer. Did you feel pressure to live up to that?

I'd be lying if I said I didn't. It was a dream to be able to step into couture clothing straight off the runway, but zipping into size 0 samples made me feel like I had to mold my body into a fashion ideal. I have scars from zippers cutting into me. There was no way I was going to starve myself. So I had to get up in the morning and work hard to tone up. As much as I loved the show, in some ways I was relieved when it was canceled.

You revealed a lot of skin on the show. Did that freak you out?

It was terrifying! I've been skydiving, and believe me, taking off my clothes for the camera was scarier than jumping out of a plane.

Is Brooke Shields really jealous of your booty?

Brooke and [Lipstick Jungle costar] Kim Raver are fans of my butt. I had a frightening thing happen last year when we were filming in New York City: I had a bunch of spider bites — three on each, um, cheek. I developed an extreme allergic reaction that made me break out in hives. So I sent Brooke and Kim an e-mail with a photo of what happened. Instead of saying, "Oh my God, I hope you're okay," they said, "Oh my God, I would do anything for that butt!" That made me feel better, I have to say.

What do you like best about your body?

My legs, because they're strong and they get me where I need to go. But I'm not liking my knees right now. I'm zoning in on a little pudge there. And yes, I know that's insane.

On Dieting and Being a "Nerd"

If you could eat anything, what would it be?

A huge wheel of Camembert cheese with fresh-baked bread and a glass of wine. I used to be a big-time cupcake girl, but Lipstick Jungle killed the cupcake for me. Every time my character was sad — which was often — she ate cupcakes.

How do you keep from pigging out on the junk food that's on set?

I bring almonds or apples to munch on. The only thing that's really tough to turn down is fresh-baked cookies. If I see them, I run the other way.

If you give in to the cookies, do you do crunches to compensate?

No. During the week, I allow for some indulgence, and I don't beat myself up about it. I think it's a slippery slope to do the this-food-equals-this-much-punishment thing.

Your character on Eastwick is a little bit of a...nerd. Is she anything like the real you?

She's a witch who's just coming into her magical powers, but she puts her foot in her mouth all the time. In a lot of ways I think she's more like me than any of my other characters, because I try to repress that awkward, nerdy, fumbling girl.

Has your inner dork ever surfaced in public?

Yes. Just the other night I was chewing gum on the red carpet and someone made me laugh. Suddenly, my gum went flying over the velvet rope and into the photographers.

What's the klutziest thing you've done lately?

Yesterday I bought an iced coffee on the way to the gym, and, of course, I spilled it down my shirt. It gets worse — there were photographers waiting for me after my workout. I'm not one of those girls who glistens when I exercise. I sweat like a fountain and turn bright red. And even though I was mortified, you know what was going through my mind? Okay, coffee stain, red face, and gross hair aside, how do my abs look?
