Michael Phelps has broken the internet on multiple occasions. Usually it's because of his record-breaking gold medal wins, but more recently he'd made headlines with his unforgettably fierce game face.
During the Olympics, Phelps matched off with his arch enemy Chad le Clos in the 200 meter butterfly. As the athletes prepped for the race, cameras caught Phelps mean-mugging in the locker room, in what appeared to be an attempt to intimidate Le Clos. Though he declines that intimidation played any part of it, Phelps' face quickly dominated the internet in the form of viral memes like this one.

Last night, when he was invited on stage at the VMAs, he finally explained why he looked so intense that night. Turns out, it had nothing to do with Le Close at all. "Remember in Rio when I made that face that ended up all over the Internet?" he asked the packed audience at NYC's Madison Square Garden. "I was in the zone with Future's track 'Stick Talk' blaring in my headphones."
Everything came full circle when he introduced Future to come perform, adding: "I might have a lot of gold, but this guy's got all the platinum."
Who knew Phelps was such a huge hip-hop fan? Excuse us while we add this track to our workout playlist.
