Snack by Mail: The Best Snack Subscription Boxes

  • Courtesy of Graze

What's the deal? Started by seven friends, Graze offers 90+ nutritious snacks, many of them sourced from small suppliers. And these snacks are more than just tasty! An in-house nutritionist makes sure that what you're getting is portion-controlled and good for you. Every snack is flagged to let you know its nutritional benefit, from calorie count (some snacks clock in under 90 calories, others at 100-150 calories) to whether it's a good source of fiber. Nutrition information is also tucked in a pamphlet included with the box.

What's inside: Snacks arrive in a recycled cardboard box with materials sourced from sustainable forests. The individually wrapped portions tend to be mixes, like their coconut, cranberry and milk chocolate variety. Graze is also the only company we sampled that also offers a snack plus a paired sauce, like their "My Thai" baked soy bites with sweet chili dipping sauce.

Delivery: Boxes are delivered every two weeks, but you can change this to once a month or, in certain areas, once a week. It takes approximately 10 days to receive your first box.

Cost: A "Nibblebox" contains four snack packs and costs $6. In some areas, a "Boostbox," with eight snack packs, runs $10. Payment is per box.

What's the deal? Dedicated to delivering snacks without artificial ingredients, trans fats, or high-fructose corn syrup, NatureBox allow you to choose from 120+ minimally processed snacks that you can filter according to dietary preference: soy-free, for instance, or non-GMO. Future snacks are determined through the feedback you give them. In your "snack pantry," rate the PB&J granola as something you "love" and they'll send it more often, but tell them to "trash" the peppery chickpeas and you'll never see them again. You can also choose and plan all your future boxes in one get-go and have them delivered in the order you want them.

NatureBox is also dedicated to larger causes. For every box that is delivered, they'll also donate one meal through Feeding America to help combat hunger in the U.S. This year, they pledge to deliver at least one million meals.

What's inside: Snacks arrive in resealable pouches, making them perfect for sharing, though not always individually portioned. If keeping your portions in check is a weakness, scan the nutrition information and serving sizes that's clearly labeled on each pouch so you know exactly what's in your honey macadamia pretzel pops — and how many you can eat before you should probably put the bag down.

    Delivery: Monthly.

Cost: There are three sizes to choose from: "Deluxe" offers five full-size snacks for $19.95, "Happy Snacker" is 10 snacks for $29.95, and "Smart Snacker" is 20 snacks for $49.95. You only pay per box, so there's no commitment.

    Healthy Surprise

What's the deal? Maybe rather than explain what Healthy Surprise is, is to explain what it's not: all included products are gluten-, soy-, corn-, wheat-, additive-, and animal product-free. There's also no high-fructose corn syrup or partially hydrogenated oils. In other words, if you have food restrictions or sensitivities, this is likely something that'll jibe with your lifestyle. Not all snacks were packaged as single servings. So if you're watching your waistline, be sure to read labels for portion sizes.

What's inside: Tucked inside the cardboard box were basic snack staples, like roasted almonds, nut-and-seed trail mixes and dehydrated fruit pouches. But there were also a few more unique items, like maple cranberry kale-nola (yes, you read that right) and gluten-free chocolate chip cookie dough macaroons.

Bonus inclusion: a one-pager that features a healthy recipe (this particular one was for a berry-based smoothie) and some nutrient know-how.

Delivery: Monthly. Ships the same day.

Cost: The "Starter Box," meant for one to two people, rings in at $40 a month, delivering 11 full-size snacks. The "Big Box" delivers 16 snacks at $60 a month, and the "Combo Box" offers 27 snacks for $95 a month.

    Love with Food

What's the deal? Looking for organic, all-natural snacks? No trans fats, high-fructose corn syrup, or hydrogenated oils? Check, check, check. Love With Food translates the founder's personal passion for bonding over healthy eats into seasonally themed boxes, like fall flavors in November (ginger tea, maple fudge, rosemary sea salt shortbread), or February's "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" (chocolate chip biscotti, olives with a hint of garlic).

Plus, for every box sold, they donate a meal to food banks like Feeding America or Share Our Strength: No Kid Hungry.

What's inside: We sampled their spring-theme "Flower Power" box, containing a variety of individually wrapped snacks, like a nutty, cinnamon-infused energy bar and a honey Belgian waffle cookie. The box also featured additional items like organic jam and hibiscus tea meant for pairing.

Delivery: Monthly. Subscribers will get a USPS tracking number around the 10th of each month, and items should arrive within 10 business days.

Cost: Tasting Boxes start at $10/month with at least 8 snacks included. Their Deluxe Box includes 16-20 snacks and starts at $17/month.
