The Green Smoothie Barry's Bootcamp Trainer Derek DeGrazio Swears By

Ever wondered how Barry's Bootcamp master trainer Derek DeGrazio (who toured the globe with Britney Spears and had Kim and the rest of the Kardashians as regulars in his class) stays in tip-top form? He makes his own creation, the Derek Skinny Smoothie, after every single workout. (Well, that, genetics, and tons of hard work, of course.) "I feel like I'm in the Bahamas every time I drink it," says DeGrazio. "Very rarely do you have something that tastes as good as it is [good] for you."

Since the Derek Skinny is only available to clients who attend the Miami Beach and Midtown Manhattan locations (where DeGrazio is a partner), he's given us the skinny on the drink he calls a green juice meets protein shake with a tropical twist. "It's an all-in-one shake," he says. Inside each smoothie: DeGrazio's own plant-based whey protein (loaded with 21 different fruits and vegetables), pineapple, banana, water, ice, L-carnitine, and glutamine. "I swear by adding L-carnitine and glutamine, which are crucial to facilitate fat burn and muscle recovery, to every shake I have," he says. If you're one of the loyal clients at Barry's Bootcamp who works out four or even five times a week, think of this smoothie as your sore muscles' saving grace so you can come back and do it all over again the next day. "You'll still be sore, but not as sore," he adds.

Though he's a stickler for form in the studio, DeGrazio is pretty laid-back when it comes to his smoothie recipe. "People can add almond milk, berries, and even peanut or almond butter, and it tastes just as good." "Derek Skinny" Smoothie Recipe

Ingredients

  • 8 oz. water
  • 1 scoop Derek Skinny exclusive protein powder (contact derek@barrysbootcamp.com for details) or your favorite protein powder of choice
  • 1/2 cup frozen banana, chopped
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple, chopped
  • 1/2 cup ice
  • 1 teaspoon L-carnitine powder
  • 1 teaspoon glutamine

Directions

1. Place all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth and creamy, about 30 seconds.
