Your 3-Step Healthy Hot Chocolate Recipe

Jen uses dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate to take advantage of the antioxidant benefits. Look for chips that contains at least 60 percent cocoa. Dark chocolate will give your drink a rich, intense flavor with less added sugar. The combination of cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon will give your hot chocolate a flavor reminiscent of a chai spice. A chai latte and hot chocolate in one delicious drink—you can't ask for anything better!


Note: The dry mix makes enough for 10 to 12 servings and can be stored in a mason jar.

1 1/4 cups of dark chocolate chips

3/4 cup of powdered sugar

1/2 cup of dry nonfat milk

1/3 cup of cocoa powder

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon


1 cup milk of your choice (unsweetened almond milk is only 30 calories per cup)

Optional: whipped cream


  1. Combine dry ingredients in a bowl, set aside.
  2. On the stovetop or in the microwave, heat 1 cup of milk
  3. Pour milk into a mug. Stir in 3 tablespoons of the hot chocolate mix. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
