Staying Fit on the Campaign Trail With Fox News Reporter Shannon Bream


"With all the talk of Paul Ryan and P90X, I feel like we all need to step our fitness up a notch to keep up the with candidates!" says Shannon Bream, Supreme Court reporter for Fox News. The former Miss USA and Miss America competitor, law school grad and self-proclaimed news junkie is walking the walk—her nearly daily fitness habit "is a huge stress reliever."

We wanted to learn more about what it was like to try to stay in shape on the campaign trail, so we turned the tables and put Bream in the hot seat right before the Republican National Convention that she's covering in Tampa.

What are you most looking forward to at the upcoming convention? It's basically like a big pep rally that the political parties hold every four years. They elicit the best speakers and you are able to see the party faithful gather and get ready for the final election push. I lived in Tampa for years and actually trained for my first marathon there—my husband and I actually ran past the convention center hosting the event hundreds of times. I'm excited to go back and revisit the place where I turned into a runner!

We've heard a lot about how Paul Ryan and his P90X routine. How do you stay fit, both at home and on the road? I run, lift weights and take bootcamp classes. For me, fitness is about feeling a certain way. It's a huge stress reliever.

Do you have any tricks for fitting in your workouts on busy days? If I don't do it in the morning, it won't get done. I wake up early six days a week to exercise and clear my head.

If you could go on a run with any political figure, who would you pick and why? I'd need to pick someone slow enough so I wouldn't get smoked! [Laughs] I'd love to go for a jog with any of the nine Supreme Court justices willing to join me.

It sounds like you're very fit! Do you watch what you eat as well? I do, but I also enjoy treats like pizza in moderation. You have to have balance, because if you put something like fast food completely off limits, it's even more tempting. One of my favorite on-the-go snacks is chocolate milk. I actually carry around the Hershey's chocolate milk that's in juice box containers. It has some protein and is great after workouts or just walking around the halls at the office.
