Shop smart. "A high price tag doesn't necessarily mean high-performance denim—great quality can be found at every price point," says Jill Guenza, the vice president of women's design for Levi's. A good test before you buy: "Lay jeans flat and stretch one of the legs tightly two or three times, then let go. If the denim is high quality, you won't be able to see where you stretched it."

Choose the right fit. "Denim is all about the style that works best for your shape," says Preston Konrad, the style director for American Eagle Outfitters. "A high rise elongates your body and lifts your butt. Long legs look great in a flare cut. Also, keep an eye out for denim that has been hand-whiskered or dyed and treated to look broken in," Konrad suggests. "These kinds of special details make a great pair of jeans stand out from the pack."

Wash jeans less, wear them more. "Instead of laundering your jeans regularly, place them in a ziplock bag and stash them in the freezer overnight. This will kill the bacteria and allow you to get more wear out of them between washes," says Ron Poisson, the founder and designer of Cult of Individuality denim. Wash jeans only when really necessary, he adds, "and never put them in the dryer; air-drying allows them to maintain their color, character and original fit."
