Parkinson's Unity Walk
The Unity Walk is the largest grassroots fundraiser for Parkinson's research in the community. It began in 1994 through the efforts of patients, families, support groups, and friends of those affected by the disease. One hundred percent of all donations made goes directly to Parkinson's research: Its first year, the walk raised $16,000 -- last year it raised $1,700,000.
The 14th annual walk will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2008, in New York City. It will be a 2-mile circular walk, starting and ending at the Central Park Bandshell. Events will take place all day, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
Marlene Kahan, executive director of the American Society of Magazine Editors, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease a little over three years ago. She has helped raise $150,000 for Parkinson's research since then. Her goal this year: To raise $50,000 through the Unity Walk.
