Trainer Tells: Are Intervals or Steady-State Cardio Better for Weight Loss?
Celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak dishes on which type of cardio may get you better results.
-Hi guys, I'm Mary Anderson, deputy editor at Fitness Magazine, and we're back with another Trainer Tells segment. This question comes from Facebook follower, Marissa Figueroa, who wanted to know what's better for weight loss, doing intervals or steady cardio for a longer time. Well, we caught up with celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak to get that answered. -So, this answer is for Marissa Figueroa's question about what's better, steady state cardio or interval training. There is a bunch of research showing that interval training might be slightly more effective at burning calories than steady state cardio. However, it really boils down to real-life real world application. What do you wanna do? What do you enjoy doing? What are you gonna stick to? And if you ask me, I mean I hop on the elliptical, run the Arc Trainer, and I'll put on Netflix and I'll watch the Walking Dead or I'll watch Breaking Bad. And I'll zone out. And because I am distracted by entertainment, exercise feels easier to me, so I tend to work at a higher intensity and I stay on longer and I do it more consistently. So really, it's about you. One method might be 1 percent, 2 percent, 3 percent better than the other, but if you do it 5 percent less times or 10 percent less time, it's not. So, it's all about you, what you think you'll do. I personally am a fan of steady state cardio, zoning out, returning e-mails, watching Netflix.
