-Hey, guys, it's Elessa here for Pursebuzz. We are behind the scenes here at Lancome and I've actually run into Holly with Nylon Magazine, the beauty director, and we're gonna ask her a little bit about what she does and how she got to where she's at. How are you doing today?
-I'm good. It's fashion week so there's a lot of-- there's a lot going on, a lot of running around, but it's exciting.
-So what have you done so far this week?
-Wow, what did I do so far?
I did Peter Som, Altuzarra, [unk] what did I do? I'm not thinking of a day [unk] here. What did I do this morning with Peter Som? A lot. A lot of running around.
-So what do you do exactly when you're running around?
-So I go backstage with my little tape recorder, I talk to the hairstylist, the makeup artist, the manicurist, and then even the designer and try to talk to some of the models as well and, you know, try to find out what the look is,
what the inspiration is, and, you know, as the week goes on, you start to see trends so you say, you ask about how the metallic eye [unk] this morning that Peter Som was different than the one he did last night and Altuzarra and sort of start thinking about trends and it's always interesting to see what products that they're using that we don't have in the States or that we've never heard of. That's always the most exciting for me. It's not just all the usual black Lancome Artliner but all the other stuff and what weird brush that is
and what-- so it's all-- it's an experience you can't really get. You know, afterwards, you can get from the company what all that information but it's not like the same as being in the moment with them and seeing how they're dealing with it. Sometimes, though, you think it's interesting is in what they do, you know, and you'll say, oh, like, you know, you're making her hair look like it has roots and how big hair you got, I say, "No, no, what is that?" You know, so there's a lot of that, a lot of trying to get as much information as possible and, of course, there's all the other people who are doing blogs also.
You have to make sure that you're not getting the same quotes maybe here or you're gonna do it in a different way.
-So out of all the shows you've seen, what's your favorite trend?
-I don't know, I think it's too early to talk about trend. I'm seeing some white nails.
-Uh huh.
-A lot of metallic on the eye, a lot of eyeshadow that's like a smoky eye but not black.
-Uh huh.
-So it'll be with like a taupe or a gray, it's a lot of those but it's pretty early to tell. I think that we have to wait. Diane von Furstenberg is today and so is, I wanna say, [unk] and then tomorrow we'll get,
you know, the next few days, we get into Oscar and Mark and Merck and I think you'll see a lot more-- as the time goes by. It's hard to tell, yeah, what the trend 'cause you always see neutrals, you always see your darker eye, you always see that stuff coming out because it's fall.
-You're like super, super busy then, huh?
-It's busy. Especially since we put the magazine this early.
-Right. So that's what's so amazing that you're beauty director with Nylon and like a lot of girls growing up, boys, too, you know, we wanna know how to get to where you're at.
Like what are your tips and tricks on-- for a career path to what you're working?
-There are certainly no tricks. I wish there were but it's really about, you know, you have to work hard and you have to want it a lot. I mean, it's not-- I know people who think, you know, there are some people who honestly think, you know, starting out, they think they got fashion shows and you get free clothes and, you know, it's just not like that. It's a real business and it's real journalism and I think that I started as an intern, I was an intern at [unk]
and learned what brands to won, what brands, you know, and what, you know, who's been in the industry forever, what models are up and coming, and you sort of, you know, and after interning, I think interning is really the way to do it. You don't have to go and have a Masters in journalism, you don't have to do that, so if you want to, you can. You know, it's certainly good, but I think a lot of it is interning, meeting people, making a really good impression by working really hard and showing that it's something you genuinely care about, you know?
You know, even for me, I get beauty intern who are interesting in bringing home as much lip gloss as possible and I get the ones who really wanna know why they chose the purple eyeliner instead of a blue eyeliner and it's a-- you have to be really interested in it beyond just yourself and beyond the glamorousness and beyond the free stuff and beyond the trips and all the stuff that you might get as perks at some point in your career. You know, none of that really--
-So, tell me, like some people have never heard of your magazine or maybe they've heard of it but they don't know where to find it,
can you tell me where they can pick up your magazine and when's the latest one gonna be released?
-The new issue is just coming out, Lady Miss Kier is on the cover, it's the February issue. It's in pretty much most Barnes and Noble bookstores, airports, NylonMag.com as well. We also have editions in Mexico, Korea, and Japan which are actually really interesting and cool to look at and some great layouts.
-Well, thank you so much, Holly. Bye, guys. See you later.
