-Hey there! Welcome to pursebuzz.com. Today, we're gonna go to L.A. to have an interview with John Stapleton, Senior MAC Artist and he's gonna give me a makeover and we're gonna ask him a lot of questions, but the first thing is we're gonna grab those chocolate chip donuts. Hopefully, they have some left. It's almost 9:30, so they might be all gone but let's cross our fingers and I'll let you know. Sorry guys and gals, no donut.
All they had was a chocolate twist and sprinkles and all that stuff, so maybe next time. They probably stop making it because it's been awhile since I've been here ever since I moved, so they probably were like, where's that girl that always gets our donuts. So, they just stopped making it. I just pretend that they did that. I guess we'll just head back on to our original plans, hangout with John Stapleton which is probably better than eating donut anyway.
-Hello.
-Hi there. Welcome to pursebuzz.com. Tonight, here, with John Stapleton--
-Hello.
-in L.A.
And you just finish giving me a makeover, very fun bright looks and everything and we're just gonna show you the whole routine.
-Stay tuned.
-John, can you tell me how you started in the industry--
-Sure. Let's see, I've been a makeup artist for MAC for 12 years now. And I'm a painter. That's what I do. I paint water colors and I went to art school in New York and turned them into a makeup carrier.
-How long have you been doing makeup?
-I've been doing makeup for 12 years now.
And I've worked on lots of great people from Hillary Duff to Pamela Anderson. Recently, I've been working with Margaret Cho, so all ethnicities, all types of people, rock stars, singers, and the everyday woman who is the most important and it's been great a carrier. It's been fun.
-Can you tell me what you're working on here with Tarina Tarantino?
-Oh yes. This is Tarina Tarantino's new catalogue called Tokyo Hardcore
and I'll show you my absolute favorite picture in the book. It's kind of a spoiler. So, if you haven't really seen this book yet, I think it's really beautiful. The skin was done with a little bit of Strobe Cream and the Reflex Pearl Glitter to make it look really frosty and beautiful. You can maybe post that .
-Yeah, I'm gonna scan all the pages.
-Not all, but you know some.
-Yeah.
-That is a lot of fun.
I've known Tarina for years and we collaborate quite a bit. She's a good friend of MAC. She used to work for MAC years ago, so that's how we met and so we had a lot of fun with the makeup, sort of japanese cartoon inspired, sort of like the makeup we did today.
-So, what do you be okay, I mean like not be okay, like recommend, like, say, I'm gonna
-Yes.
-And then on Sunday I can go to work like this.
-Yes.
-Is that a big no-no or--
-Absolutely not. I think you look beautiful. I think this is something that you could go to work. I'm sure when you go in to work, there's gonna be a commentary about that lipstick 'cause people will be like wow.
But you know that's how you make trend happen. That's why you embrace it. You take small steps. You don't have to do it all at once. You can just pick maybe one trend that you see happening and do with a pared down version of it, and I think you'll have great success with that.
-Thanks, and you said Pamela Anderson, everybody wants a Pamela Anderson .
-Yes.
-What do you do? Like, what other secrets can you, just like for products, like what----
-With Pam, I mean, with Pam and some of the Smoulder, kind of tiny pencil or Smoulder pencil.
We used colors like bamboo. We used colors like Embark and it's all sort of like the makeup which I did with you where we start with the pencil base and then you work in brown shadows, always Blacktrack, always a pair of lashes. Inside liner usually Smoulder and then of course that typical Pam nude look. So we do something like I would say Spice Pencil and--
-It is sold out.
-Spice Pencil, oh, the Spice Pencil has always been great.
-Great.
-You know, the number one like nude pencils. Still is awesome. Spice Pencil or Oak Pencil cases, and then like you know Fleshpot Lipstick, something really nude, blend it out and then some gloss. Her skin is so flawless and she's nice to work with, so it's easy.
-And the next is you're going to Sundance, right?
-I'm going to Sundance in a couple of days.
-In a few days. How do you--
-I should be busy.
-get along with that between work
-Well, you know I have sort of a fluctuating schedule, sort of on-call with MAC. I'm available to go out there and do, you know, whatever is needed and I really am a tool for other makeup artist, so that they need to understand the product. They can talk to me about what ingredients are in the product or you know what is happening as far as trend goes. You can see that we're really doing a lot of runway shows that will bring you back to the other makeup artist.
So, you know, I'm sort of a tool for the makeup artist, but more like to help them. They ask questions about how can I do this? I love to teach.
-I like to teach, too, better than applying, like, I don't like to do this thing but I wanna just do talking.
-Really? I kinda like doing both.
-This is how you do it.
-But---- 'Cause I think sometimes when you're at a loss for words, and then step in and do technique. So it's a little bit of, you know, it works all the way.
-I don't know. I think that's why I kind of wanna be like just
-Like one hot college professor. It's a little distracting. I don't know if anyone is going to pay attention to their work but--.
-Thank you. I have one more question; everyone is asking what's in your kit? What do you always have in your kit?
-Okay.
-Not a lot of, just everyday--
-Well, what I carry, I'd like to carry a Face and Body Foundation.
I like to carry a Stick Foundation and the reason being is because Face and Body will cover legs and body as well as face. And Stick Foundation can give me all coverage. I like to carry a foundation that allows me the option of full to sheer coverage, matte to satin to glossy. In other words, 1 foundation that I can either powder in it or I can put a gloss on it, or I can leave it alone, or----So, I need a foundation that's gonna be versatile
because if I show up in a shoot and they say you know it has to be a Matte Foundation, I have Hyper Real, that's not gonna happen. So with Stick Foundation, I could add Strobe Cream to it to make it look like Hyper Real or I could just powder it. I can make it full. I can make it thick. So I always have Stick Foundation, Invisible Powder, Mineralize Skinfinish powders, and I carry like a variety of blushes, colorful and contour colors.
When you're talking about really Europe, you're talking about a very neutral palette usually and then sometimes colors added to it. And when it comes to like, if this is the lipstick on the show, most of us would have it in our kit. Excuse me. So it would be .
-Okay.
-Someone would come with a lipstick and say, "this is the lip we're gonna use." So, if I did a show, if I assisted a makeup artist on a show and they were looking for an orange and if I would bring this lip alone, and say, "Well, this is what we have," and they say, "It's perfect," then I have to bring 6 for everybody or whatever, so.
-Great! I think that's pretty much it. Thank you so much John--
-Thanks.
-for doing this.
-Thanks for having me.
-I've never looked like this before.
-She's looked always as good and doing great.
-I'm so excited! I'm so excited!
-I'm glad.
-Thank you so much for everything. You came all the way out and see me. We came out to L.A. and John
-No, I'm from New York. I'm from Brooklyn. Any Brooklynites out there from Brooklyn?
-I didn't even know that.
-Yes.
-Flatbush. But I live in Hollywood.
-Okay. So you live in Hollywood.
-I do, yeah.
-Alright, it's over there I would say.
-Yes.
-Oh, it's okay. I'm glad they came. I'm glad you guys came in.
- right a little bit now. So, thank you so much for joining us. Buh-bye!
-Thanks guys. Have a good day.
-Have a good day, you know that.
