What Makes a Winner?
Supermarkets stock an average of 45,000 products. And then there are all the package claims: low-fat, low-carb, low-sugar, sugar-free, wheat-free, all-natural, heart-healthy, organic... How in the world are you supposed to know what to buy? We've come up with a list. But first, you may be wondering...
What makes a winner? A panel of top nutritionists created healthy criteria for each product category (the number of calories and grams of fat each food should contain, that deli meats be low in sodium, breads and cereals high in fiber and so on). The top three to five brands in each category that met our stringent standards were taste-tested by dozens of staffers in our company. (Only nationally available products qualified.) (Look for a Fitness Healthy Food Award Winner in every issue on our nutrition pages.) Promise -- you won't find a cardboardy cracker or a tasteless treat in the bunch.
