The Healthiest Bread

A guide to selecting the most nutritious bread.

Multigrain, 12-grain, oat nut...they all sound healthy. But you'll need to look closer to make sure you're getting all the good stuff that comes only from true whole grains. Amy Jamieson-Petonic, RD, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, says to look for:

  • The world "whole" before any, or at least the first, grain or flour in the ingredients list.
  • Two to three grams of fiber per slice. Pay attention to serving sizes -- many labels say two grams of fiber, but that may be for two slices, not one.
  • Fewer than 100 calories per slice. Low-calorie or light varieties often supply all the same fiber and other nutrients for only about 70 calories per two-slice serving.

Our Picks

  • Arnold Bakery Light 100% Whole Wheat
  • Wonder White Bread Fans 100% Whole Grain
  • Pepperidge Farms 100% Whole Wheat Thin Sliced Bread
