Like most Americans, you probably spend more than 50 hours a year grocery shopping but little of that time paying attention to labels. No worries. We did the work for you, consulting a panel of top nutritionists for what's best in terms of calories, fat, fiber, sodium, and more. Then we tested and tasted our way through hundreds of foods and drinks (tough job, we know!). Here, dig in to the 55 healthiest and most delicious picks on store shelves.

The Healthiest Foods in Your Grocery Store

Use this guide to find the tastiest, healthiest packaged foods in your grocery store. Get the handy printable shopping list on the next page!

How We Picked the Winners

We asked more than 100 companies to submit their healthiest products -- foods and beverages that are high in protein and fiber and low in fat, saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars. Once the packaged goods arrived at our offices, three top nutritionists -- Anar Allidina, RD, a nutritionist in private practice in New York City; Keri Gans, RD, New York spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association; and Marissa Lippert, RD, author of The Cheater's Diet -- spent hours analyzing the nutrition facts and ingredients label on each to help us determine which deserved a place in our taste tests. Those finalists were then sampled and voted on by dozens of staffers throughout our company.

You don't even need to buy an air popper - buy a bag of paper lunch sacks and you can "air pop" your popcorn the same way the mini bags do in the microwave without all the fake butter in the bag. :)

I think that this article was very useful. As it said in the "title" it was to tell what the best frozen, prepackaged and canned foods that were healthy. Nobody ever has time to where they can eat fresh foods all of the time. They aren't always available in all areas either. It helps to know what is the best packaged foods for your health.

wow, thank you for sharing about the popcorn, the kids and I have nuked popcorn in various flavors at least x2 a week!I'd hate to think I am slowly poisoning my children...and I think popping the old fashioned way will be a fun experience to share, so , thank you again!

I agree about the processed stuff. All you need at the grocery store is a trip through the meat/seafood department, the dairy case and an extended stay in the produce department. Sticking to the outskirts of a store always always means you will spend less. Keep a well stocked pantry (flour, salt, sugar, yeast, etc.) and make your own breads, pastas and more. NO fake foods or fake flavors!
