Can Fiber Fight Cancer?

Can adding fiber to your diet help lower your risk for cancer? Our expert shares the best cancer-fighting foods.
Question: "First I hear that fiber fights cancer, then I read it doesn't! What's the story?"

Answer:The medical community is still firmly behind fiber, especially if you get it from fruits and vegetables. More than 200 studies have revealed a "strong association between diets high in fruits and vegetables and lower cancer risk," according to a statement signed by over 50 cancer experts (see www.aicr.org for the full text). Eating five to nine servings daily has also been linked to a lower risk for heart disease and diabetes. So don't let a few highly publicized studies deter you from boosting your fiber intake, especially since they run counter to a large body of evidence. Apples, blueberries, beans and broccoli are all good choices.
