Hot Dogs: Hebrew National and Ball Park Beef Franks

Make your summer barbecue healthier by choosing a low-calorie wiener.

Bite It: Hebrew National 97% Fat Free Beef Franks

We're not saying hot dogs are good for you -- any of them. But we're only human, and every once in a while we get a hankering for an old-fashioned grilled frankfurter. Especially now that BBQ season is here. When these times of desperation arise, we reach for Hebrew National's 97% Fat Free Beef Franks. They taste almost as good as full-fat franks -- just as good in some cases -- but contain a fraction of the calories and fat. In fact, you can eat three of these pups and still take in 45 fewer calories and 11.5 fewer fat grams than you'd get from one measly Ball Park Beef Frank. That's insane! HG Heads Up: Don't be fooled by Hebrew National's Reduced Fat Beef Franks -- those still have 120 calories and 10 fat grams! Just slide one of these nearly fat-free franks into a Wonder Light hot dog bun or wrap it in a slice of light bread, and you've got yourself a delicious low-cal snack or the start of a great light lunch! Good doggie!

Fight It: Ball Park Beef Franks

They "plump when you cook 'em!" is Ball Park's advertising slogan. Perhaps a more honest ad promise would be, "You plump when you eat 'em!" Each of these freakishly fatty franks has 16 grams of fat and 180 calories. That's more than 10 times the fat and 4 times the calories you'd get in a Hebrew National 97% Fat Free Beef Frank. And trust us, these dogs don't even taste any better than Hebrew National's super-low-fat alternative. Send these pound-packing puppies straight to the doghouse. Heads Up: Ball Park does make fat-free beef franks, but they're just not as good as Hebrew National's 97% Fat Free ones (although we're still big fans of their fat-free turkey franks).
