Can I Use a Microdermabrasion Kit on My Body?

Microdermabrasion kits for the face are everywhere -- and now, you can also try full-body microdermabrasion. Here, our expert dermatologist shares her tips and tricks.

Question: "I've heard that microdermabrasion is great for my face, but will it work on my body too?"

Answer: Not only will it work, microdermabrasion is more efficient than using a regular exfoliator, especially at this time of year. "The aluminum oxide crystals used in the treatment are irregular in shape, as opposed to the round particles in grainy scrubs," says Lydia Evans, MD, a dermatologist in Chappaqua, New York. That shape allows them to more easily lift dead skin, of which most of us have an abundance thanks to cold, dry air.

Pick up a kit, such as the L'Oreal Paris Refinish Chest, Arms, & Hands Micro-Dermabrasion kit, $24.99, at the drugstore -- the treatment is suitable for all skin types, even sensitive and those with mild eczema. However, if you have a more serious condition, such as psoriasis or a rash, steer clear.
