Ever wonder what dermatologists, makeup artists, and hair gurus know that you don't? We asked the top pros in the beauty biz to divulge, and learned tricks that were new even to our in-the-know beauty editors. Follow them and you'll have amazing skin, gorgeous hair, and flawless makeup -- guaranteed.
1. Calm Your Complexion Mix old-fashioned oats with water to form a paste, apply, and leave on for 15 minutes to reduce redness, says Audra Senkus, co-owner of Haven Spa in New York City.
2. Banish Dark Circles Wrap grated raw potato in cheesecloth and place over eyes for five minutes every morning, says Fredric Brandt, MD, a cosmetic dermatologist in New York City and Miami. Potatoes contain an enzyme called catecholase that's a natural skin lightener.
3. Get a Better Faux Glow Apply self-tanner within half an hour of showering, when your skin is at a lower pH, says Shelley Barrett, founder and CEO of ModelCo makeup solutions. The tanning formula will react with your skin more quickly and develop into a longer-lasting, deeper bronze.
4. Preserve Shine If you're active and shower twice a day, don't shampoo the second time, says Sharon Dorram-Krause, head colorist at John Frieda Salon. Just condition the ends.
5. Say So Long to Split Ends To avoid breakage, comb through the ends first, working up toward roots, says Gina Bertolotti, a stylist at the Oscar Blandi Salon in New York.
Flawless Makeup6. Get an Instant Glow Warm illuminating lotion between the palms of your hands, then lightly press onto a made-up face (even over powder) for a dewy-looking complexion, says Rebecca Morrice Williams, creator of Becca Cosmetics.
7. Brighten Your Eyes Blend a bit of golden shimmer cream into under-eye concealer and apply under eyes. This magically cancels out dark circles and wakes up the whole eye area, says Jeanine Lobell, founder and creator of Stila.
8. Add Dramatic Color, Fast Instead of attempting to do a made-up eye when time is tight, just line the inner upper rim with a jewel-toned pencil, like sapphire or emerald, says Wende Zomnir, executive creative director of Urban Decay and Hard Candy Cosmetics.
9. Smooth Dry Cuticles Conditioner is an amazing cuticle softener, says Senkus. Dab on in the shower, then push cuticles back with your towel while drying off.
10. Extend the Life of Your Pedicure Wear insoles -- styles by Apara and Dr. Scholl's work all year long. A buffer between your foot and shoe will help prevent calluses, says Carla Kay, a celebrity pedicurist in Los Angeles.
Buffed Body11. Get Super-Smooth Underarms Apply an exfoliating facial cleanser before shaving, says Cristina Carlino, founder and CEO of Philosophy. The sloughing action helps you get a closer shave and eliminates bacteria so you won't get bumps.
12. Play Up Your Legs Before waxing or shaving, mix olive oil and Epsom salts, rub onto your legs, then rinse off. The combination deeply exfoliates and moisturizes, says Cindy Barshop, owner of Completely Bare spa.
