4 Steps to a Flawless Complexion

Want perfect skin? Return to the basics: daily cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing. Our four steps will leave your skin glowing.

As skincare gets more high-tech (hello, microdermabrasion, fillers, and Botox), it's important to remember the basics. Daily cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing will give you a clear, glowing complexion -- without your having to make a doctor's appointment, says David Orentreich, MD, a dermatologist in New York City. One regimen we love: Clinique's 3-Step Skin Care System, featuring Facial Soap, salicylic acid?packed Clarifying Lotion, and Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. February marks the relaunch of the iconic skincare trifecta, with updated formulas and packaging. In fact, following any regimen that includes gentle cleansing and moisturizing (to balance pH) and exfoliating (which clears pores) will impart a coveted glow, especially if you follow these steps:

1. Target your T-zone.

Most women have a greater buildup of cells on the forehead, nose, and chin, which can lead to clogged pores. Sweep a cotton puff or pad steeped in salicylic acid?based toner over your face, concentrating on those areas.

2. Do a weekly mask.

Feed skin extra nutrients or antiaging ingredients with a once-a-week treatment. "Masks can penetrate more deeply and are more effective once dead cells have been diminished," says Karen Axmaker, an aesthetician at Sally Hershberger's Face Place in New York City.

3. Use an SPF of 15 or higher.

Consistent sloughing helps diminish hyperpigmentation like brown spots and freckles. To keep skin tone even, you must use a protective product with an SPF of 15 or higher -- even for incidental sun exposure.

4. Apply makeup with a light hand.

When skin is properly exfoliated, you don't need a ton of coverage. "You won't have to worry about the cakey look that can result from pigment clinging to clumps of dry cells," says Liam Dunn, a makeup artist in New York City.
