Protect yourself with these tips for nighttime workouts.

Longer days make outdoor evening workouts more tempting, but stats show there’s also more crime in the summer. Protect yourself with these tips from Joseph B. Walker, author of Self-Defense Techniques & Tactics (Human Kinetics, 2003).

  1. Don't go alone. A workout partner is good, but the more bodies, the better. An attacker is less likely to approach a large group than a pair.
  2. Take the road more traveled. Stay on heavily populated routes and avoid secluded spots. Be aware of places where an attacker can hide.
  3. Bring a pen. Pepper sprays are often used against a victim; alarms can be disarmed or ignored. But a simple ballpoint pen can be used to gouge at the eyes or throat of an assailant -- and it's legal in all 50 states.
  4. Carry a tune -- in your head. It's easy to become distracted when listening to music on a headset. Focus on your environment instead.
  5. Listen to your gut. If you think someone is acting suspiciously, get to a safe place as soon as possible.
