POLL #2: THE BIKE
A good bike should have many uses. When I was 12, my friends and I would find slugs and meticulously line them up on our bike tires. When each girl had approximately four to five gripping the black tread, we’d nod, take a seat and roll down my friend Kelly’s driveway. This was all done in the good name of ridding our neighborhood’s “slug problem.”
This new bike will not only help with pest control (NYC cockroaches, dear readers), but also carry me through hundreds of training miles. I’m nowhere near hardcore enough to require a tri bike and the perks of a high-end racing bike would be lost on a beginner like me, so I asked three bike companies to recommend a one that would go the distance. It needed to be beginner- and advanced-friendly, so I’d never grow out of it. One bike for life.
Each of these bikes uses an advanced women-specific, race-inspired geometry and is engineered for speed, efficiency and lightness. In short: They all kick a**. If you’re a bike nerd, you’ll know what I mean by looking at the stats below.

SPECIALIZED! I have one and love it!

The Amira is siiiiiick!
February 5, 2010 at 4:34 pm, by Jim
Which fits you well?
Is it really a fair comparison? A quick google says the Specialized is twice the $$ of the other two. What competes at the same price point?
I’d love to say “Go Specialized” as I am on my 4th and 5th Specialized bikes myself, but you really need to make sure the fit is right and the $ is what you want to spend. Go find them locally, do proper test rides, and then realize what you’re getting, or giving up, between them.
I’m still voting for the big red S.

Specialized = Super Slug Killer!
February 5, 2010 at 5:54 pm, by Arch
Jim’s right. If the Specialized is so much more expensive, you might consider the C-dale over it. The Specialized seems like it will handle better, and it will be more aggressive than the Synapse which I think is a good thing, so I say Specialized all the way.

Specialized Amira – for shizzle!
February 6, 2010 at 10:46 am, by Pam
I’d pick the Cannondale Synapse. I bought this bike last year after test riding one and it’s amazing how comfortable and smooth it rides. I’ve also heard world champion Chrissie Wellington say how the frame technology has improved her run.
February 6, 2010 at 11:40 am, by Jamie
I picked the Cannondale, 700 dollars cheaper than the Specialized and its endorsed by the top 2 female triathletes in the world Chrissie Wellington and Mirinda Carfrae. If you prefer red the Synapse is also available in red.
February 6, 2010 at 11:43 am, by Lila
For your first triathalon you have to go with Cannondale. Bike of choice for current World Chamption Chrissie Wellington. Its a no-brainer!
February 6, 2010 at 3:29 pm, by hoon
i’d say the Cannondale. best value of the bunch and will provide the versatility to take you from that first tri to your first 5boro.
February 6, 2010 at 3:30 pm, by Mary
I’ve always wanted a Cannondale. I love the color!
February 6, 2010 at 4:22 pm, by Andrea
I bought a Cannondale last year and love it. My next upgrade will be to a Synapse. Pick the Cannondale
February 6, 2010 at 4:38 pm, by DukeSlydaz
Definitely the Specialized! My first bike was a Specialized Allez! It was rock solid and allowed me to lay down the training miles I needed to prepare and participate in many cycling events!
February 6, 2010 at 5:11 pm, by namdod
SAVE features of the Cannondale make it smooth so you are fresh to run – it makes you win, thats why world champs use CANNONDALE
February 6, 2010 at 10:09 pm, by Paul
It seems an odd choice for everyone to be so interested in the Specialized with its racer geometry for a first time triathelete. If your goning to do that then just get a tri bike.

Cannondale!

The Cannondale is the best choice, speaking directly from experience.
February 7, 2010 at 5:37 pm, by Mario
Cannondale for sure. Its all about the frame…and that’s where Cannondale is clearly better. I ride a synapse and its really smooth, great handling, stiff in the right places, but not harsh on my body.
February 8, 2010 at 7:08 am, by JB
Cannondale, bike of choice for current World Chamption Chrissie Wellington. Ride like a world chamipion today, Ride a Cannondale.
February 8, 2010 at 7:13 am, by John
The Cannondale Synapse will not only provide you with a smoother ride but as a result, you will be fresher for the run because it has less vibration and wear & tear on your body than the other bikes!

CANNONDALE!
my six13 [precursor to to the synapse] has about 5,000 miles on it, never a problem. fast, stable, comfortable. know lots of racers and triathletes, male and female, who ride Cannondales.
i also have a vintage V900, a quick and LOVE riding a Cannondale tandem, when i can borrow it.
get it in the RED!
or get the feminine 4 in the turquoise, if you’re going for looks! MRAP: $2,449.00 USD
February 8, 2010 at 9:16 am, by Brenda Fields
Cannondale for sure.
mine has never let me down… best investment I ever made.
February 8, 2010 at 9:18 am, by GT
Cannondale for sure. Comfortable ride and still performs like a thoroughbred. How can you go wrong with the choice of the current World Champion Chrissie Wellington.
February 8, 2010 at 9:22 am, by Janie
Go for the Cannondale! It’s light, smooth, and handles great. I’ve just upgraded to this frame and I’m in LOVE!
You’ll definitely kick some butt in your Tri with this machine.

February 8, 2010 at 12:17 pm, by Rachel Sturtz
Thanks for all of your great comments! This will be my very first road cycling bike, so it’s good to know that these companies have such incredible track records.
A bike shop should help me with the fit of the winning bike, so I’m not too concerned about that. I think my first challenge will be learning to ride on the narrow road tires, clipping in/out and making sharp turns (the last time I tested a nice road bike, I nearly took out another rider during my semi-truck-like wide turn.
Please keep up the comments. I’m going to have a lot of questions once I begin riding and could use help from my legion on online bike experts.
February 8, 2010 at 12:21 pm, by chris Cleeland
Of the three choices, I think the Cannondale with the compact crank is your best choice. The Specialized may handle better as some have pointed out, but most TTs do not involve intense cornering (except maybe at a turnaround point).
In my mind, what it comes down to are the wheels: the Aksiums on the Specialized are traditional box-section rims that are about as aero as a brick. It’s not that the wheels on the Synapse or the Giant are super-aero, but the aksiums are worse aero.
The Giant only comes with a triple, and you don’t need a triple in a triathlon. You shouldn’t be doing excruciating climbs in a TT unless it’s a hill-climb TT, so that extra chainring will just be added weight and worse shifting up front.
Based on the choices, get the Synapse, then with the money you’ve saved over the Specialized, get some comfy aero bars, a good professional bike fitting, a TT helmet, and some Bontrager or Zipp TT-specific tires for the event. If the price diff is really $700, you’ll still have money left over.
February 8, 2010 at 12:24 pm, by Chris Cleeland
Rachel, you worry about taking wide turns…this shouldn’t be an issue in a triathlon b/c you should never be close enough to another rider for it to matter–it’s illegal.
Now, if you plan to line up in a local criterium, you should definitely practice that skill and get used to riding in a pack. But that doesn’t sound like what you’re aiming for.

GIANT all the way!!

I’ve been riding a C’Dale for almost 20 yrs. Upgraded to a Synapse last year and LOVE it. My C’Dale bikes have been absolutely dependable through thick & thin, training rides, centuries & triathlons. Couldn’t get me to ride anything else.

The all day riding comfort of my Synapse makes it one of the most pleasant riding I bikes I have used. The bike exhibits great stability and power transfer. I knew I was going to buy one within 10 minutes of riding one . There are a lot of good bikes this one is great!
February 8, 2010 at 1:58 pm, by Gene Hodges
In my experience Cannondale bikes ride better than Specialized bikes.

February 8, 2010 at 2:49 pm, by Adam Andrade
The Cannondale of course! Why would anyone choose to ride a Specialized?
February 8, 2010 at 2:55 pm, by Laura
I’d go with Cannondale. I’ve honestly never owned any of these brands of bikes, but if I were going to get one, it would be the Cannondale.
February 8, 2010 at 3:10 pm, by Cristin
No-brainer….Cannondale is the way to go.
February 8, 2010 at 3:11 pm, by imac
Definitely the synapse! The SAVE technology in the chainstays is the real deal and does take out the road buzz and provides alot of comfort = less fatigue! On top of that it is stiff and provides excellent power transmission and looks great too!
February 8, 2010 at 3:37 pm, by Barry
Cannondale, all the way.
February 8, 2010 at 4:14 pm, by ryan
Whichever one fits you the best. Spec wise all three of these are essentially the same. so they will perform similarly. The fit is the critical element. Heck, you may even find a bike that isn’t marketed as women’s specific fits you the best. all depends on your specific body and not your most general attribute, your gender.
I’d prioritize my choice this way:
Fit/handling (if it doesn’t fit well, no over hyped frame design is going to make your bike leg any better)
looks, plays into you psychology
weight, lighter=less effort
dealer, you will presumably need service and advice, by whichever bike is backed up by people you trust.
brand, less important than you think
good luck
February 8, 2010 at 4:31 pm, by robotrc
anything but the cannondale, They’re an evil company rulled by an evil lord who used to sell light bulbs.
February 8, 2010 at 4:42 pm, by Feel It
Cannondale. Where women’s needs are not an afterthought or marketing driven to sell more bicycles or components. Changing a color to a pastel hue does not make a gender specific product.
February 8, 2010 at 5:44 pm, by Peter
the giant is by far the best priced. the other 2 bikes are expensive in comparison,
February 8, 2010 at 6:37 pm, by pdxvelophile
Last Spring I almost went pro at test-riding bikes. I went to several shops, rode almost every bike option there was, and then continued to go back and ride them time and again. Two shops I was visiting had a cobblestone street near them. I rode five different bikes over those cobblestones and there was a noticable difference in how much I felt the vibrations and bumps on the Synapse versus the others. The Synapse does, indeed, make for a comfortable ride. It was also great climbing hills and cornering. It performed very well for me in duathlons last summer and I’m using it for a century in Tahoe this year and the Seattle to Portland ride (203mi). I have not had one moment of buyer’s remorse.
All said, though, I agree with the other readers that say go with what feels right to you. I love the Synapse, but thought the standard frame felt better than the Feminine, so I went with that.
No matter what you end up with – best of luck and kick some butt!

Cannondale! Good luck and have fun.
February 9, 2010 at 8:37 am, by Andrew HOulne
I have a Synapse, and totally love the ride. My only suggestion would be to go with the Carbon 4. The frame is almost the same, but you get SRAM group with Double Tap, Mavic Wheels, and Bottom Bracket 30 for better stiffer power transfer.

If you can choose between a Cadillac, Lincoln and a Ferrari for a car race you would go with the Ferrari. So why would you not do the same for a Triathlon? Cannondale is the obvious choice for way to many reasons.

The Cannondale! It does ROCK!!
February 9, 2010 at 11:35 am, by Jeff Cook
The comment “why would someone new to the sport go with the Specialized with it’s stiffness and race geometry” says it all. The Cannondale reaches out to those riders when they get there. It is just a smoother and more predictable ride during the process. Make the right choice with Cannondale!!

February 9, 2010 at 2:43 pm, by dave
these 3 bikes don’t really compare, that being said giant is the only one of these companies that actually makes their own bikes, cannondales used to be made in ct but now they are over seas as well. specialized doesn’t make manufacture anything but has their name on everything from tires, helmets, clothing, shoes, ect. if specialezed had their way they would turn all bike shops into car dealerships. don’t liseten to the masses of people who buy thir bikes because of pretty adds. giant all the way from design to manufacturing this is one of the few bike companies who actually makes what they sell, isn’t that a novell idea
February 9, 2010 at 2:58 pm, by Spencer
You do know that the Specialized is about twice as expensive as the Giant. We go from Carbon bike to carbon bike to aluminum. Why did you at least select a Giant that could compare better?
February 9, 2010 at 3:01 pm, by Javier Iturrieta
GIANT!! nuff said!!
February 9, 2010 at 3:02 pm, by Riding For A Reason
If you looked just at the specs and there was no brand name to giude you regarding the frame, EVERYONE should choose the Giant hands down.
They even have their own woman specific web site. http://www.giantforwomen.com/
Don’t be swayed by Cannondale or Specialized’s fan girls. Go for the real deal.
February 9, 2010 at 4:33 pm, by anne-marie
the cannondale synapse.
this bike is comfortable, which is what really matters in a bike.
because it’s so comfortable, you’ll have it forever and it will fill all yor cycling needs, which makes it economical.
no question — cannondale synapse

February 10, 2010 at 1:17 am, by Sherri
That Specialized frame is harsh for beginners and is definitely a factor.
The Cannondale wheels are undesirable as they are not aero.
The Giant is the easy choice, a super value and a better all around bike.

Definitely CANNONDALE! I too plan on doing my first triathlon this summer. I have a Cannondale Synapse myself & wouldn’t trust any other bicycle
February 10, 2010 at 8:21 am, by James
Having ridden the men’s versions of both of these, I’d recommend the Cannondale. It managed to feel both more stable and confidence-inspiring, and more lively and spirited than the Specialized. The Specialized is quite a good bike but the Cannondale just had something special about its ride.
February 10, 2010 at 8:33 am, by trisha
I picked the Synapse because my sister rides it and she has been just killing her times in her triathalons. She bought it when she first entered the sport and found it a very easy bike to work with even as a novice. Now that she’s doing 5-6 tri’s a year competitively…she appreciates the bike even more!

GTW 2.0 all the way! You get similar components and save enough money for aerobars and entry fees for 3-4 additional triathlons. No brainer! Oh wait, that wasn’t included so I guess this is a write in.
February 11, 2010 at 9:18 am, by Bill
Give the Specialized a ride test – but once you ride the Cannondale you will know that the Cannondale is far superior to Specialized. And, at a better price.
February 11, 2010 at 9:25 am, by Tman
Cannondale is the way to go. They build the best engineered bikes on the planet and this one is engineered for a rider like you. It won’t beat you up, handles predictably and looks awesome. Also has best wheels of the bunch and leaves you lots of cash vs the Specialized to get the other tri gear you will need plus pay race fees for lots of races. If you want to be poorer, get pounded on your ride and pay for marketing over engineering then get the Specialized.
February 11, 2010 at 9:26 am, by Kris
I switch brands in the mtb world thanks to my sponsorships but I never deviate with road bikes in regard to Cannondale. They really make a good product and the Synapse is no exception.
I had a Synapse which saw two Centuries and weekly training mileage ranging from 50-150 miles. I used it two years consistently and loved every minute of it. Eventually I upgraded to a more performance oriented Six Carbon but the Synapse kindled my love of cycling. The feminine version of the Synapse seems really nice.
February 11, 2010 at 9:34 am, by Anja
CANNONDALE of course! I really love my Synapse…!
February 11, 2010 at 9:35 am, by Wendy

hey, when does this poll end?
February 11, 2010 at 10:10 am, by Svenjamin
Cannondale for sure!
February 11, 2010 at 10:15 am, by Adam
Is it really fair to compare three bikes at completely different price points? Why would you not compare three bikes at the same price point? Then you could really decide where you’re getting the most for your money. This poll isn’t really fair to Giant or Cannondale.
Given the three choices though the Cannondale does offer a very similar spec for much less money over the Specialized. Plus they use more after market parts instead of house branded items.
I’d go with the Cannondale, it’s got a better frame, similar parts and you can use the money you saved on entry!
Good luck!

Cannondale all the way baby!
February 11, 2010 at 10:33 am, by Rachel Sturtz
The poll ends at 5pm today!
February 11, 2010 at 10:41 am, by Christa
I have the Cannondale and it blows the Spec away. It has a more “get up and go feel” and it fits women lost better who have a shorter torso. I would go with the Cannondale. Trek and Specialized have been marked up way too much for what you get anyways. People tend to buy into the hipe of advertising.

Synapse All the Way!!!!!!

It has to be a Cannondale…….best women’s bikes in the world
February 11, 2010 at 12:34 pm, by Scott Warga
Go with the specialized. Great bike, Great Warranty,(they replaced a 5yr old cracked frame that I bought used)
Active in supporting women’s issues like breast cancer.
I have ridden several manufactures bikes, I keep coming back to Specialized.

specialized…looks better…and always rides better…
February 11, 2010 at 12:46 pm, by Richard Goldman
I own a Cannondale CAAD3 & a Jekyll. They are both a fine ride and wouldn’t trade them for any other bike. Go Cannondale!
February 11, 2010 at 12:48 pm, by Laura
Cannondale is tried and true! I ride, work at a shop, and have had the opportunity to demo many different womens specific bikes. Cannondale is definitely my go to bike! They also have amazing support may you ever need it.
Good luck!

Cannondale hands down!
February 11, 2010 at 1:12 pm, by lynn
If you really want a bike “for life” none of these fit the bill. Get a steel frame–stiff yet forgiving, durable–preferably custom built for you (hooray for supporting US craftspeople, not big-box Taiwanese factories! Independent Fabrications is one option, Sycip is another, but any reputable custom builder will do), hand-built wheels (more durable, lighter, cheaper AND nicer to ride) and a full 105 kit, not just one or two pieces, which is what these companies do to hit a price point.
Then you will have a bike you can truly be psyched about for years, whether racing, distance riding or just cruising around town. All this “women’s” geometry is pure marketing gimmick, and just makes women’s hands hurt by pushing us too far forward. Don’t believe the hype!!

Cannondale!

The Cannondale is the best. Just ask Chrissy.
February 11, 2010 at 1:22 pm, by Amber
as a beginner myself, getting on a dropbar bike and finding my comfort zone was hard. lots of test rides can help you make the right choice. for me, it’s a specialized. the bike fits me best and makes me feel comfortable in the saddle. you can’t beat a bike that is made especially for women.
February 11, 2010 at 1:24 pm, by Markomatic
Cannondale frames are Made in USA (except for low-end ones)
Specialized: frames made in Asia.
If you’re racing in an “international” competition, I’d go with “American jobs first”.

Cannondale. I have been riding one for a couple of years and you will not be disappointed.
February 11, 2010 at 1:38 pm, by DBoydie
Cannondale for sure, they rock, plus I agree with Adam’s comment that you could use the money you save on this bike for your entry fee
February 11, 2010 at 1:40 pm, by Jen
specialized makes some awesome bicycles. i would say that if you’re looking to compete and have fun, go with the top bike you can get.
but i certainly agree with the recommendation to ride the bike that fits you best. there’s quite a bit of adjustablity for that in any bicycle, but if you’re going with the package “way it comes” deal, try them all out and see what feels most comfortable. that’s definitely going to be the best choice to ride.
February 11, 2010 at 1:58 pm, by Jon Luskin
Don’t get the Giant – it’s aluminum, and while less expensive, the ride quality is abrasive.
You want carbon, which leaves you the Cannondale and Specialized option.
I’d vote for Cannondale, as it is the better value of the two. The Cannondale also has a triple crankset option, which gives you a greater range of speeds than the Specialized. The rear cassette also has a wider range of speeds. So even if you go with the compact option on the Cannondale, you’ll still have a greater range of speeds than the Specialized. Lastly, the Cannondale has larger bearings in the bottom bracket (BB30). This makes for better power transfer. (You’ll go faster with less energy expended.)
In short, Cannondale all the way.
February 11, 2010 at 2:17 pm, by tom
I would not be swayed too much simply by the poll numbers. In reading the comments, I see multiple reasons to go with the Cannondale. Clearly these riders (and writers) know the better bike! CANNONDALE all the way!
February 11, 2010 at 2:21 pm, by cjuck
The C-dale is a better deal. Are you looking for a race bike? the Spec is their female race geometery. As you said , you are not a pro. The C-Dale will be more forging in both handling and ride compliance. That should decide it. Just make sure you are fitted correctly . Good Luck!
February 11, 2010 at 2:47 pm, by rocketttodd
I’m voting for the Specialized Amira! Specialized … all the way!
(Of course, it’s what I ride, anyways.)

I think the Cannondale is more responsive. Cannondale….the best!!!!
February 11, 2010 at 3:46 pm, by T Bird
As this poll is about to close, I see Specialized ahead by a few points. What a shame if you use this to dismiss the Cannnondale. Read the comments! The C’Dale is the better bike. I ride one and half of the people in my club ride one. We love it. Geometry and fit are so very important, and at the end of a ride you should not feel beat up from all the road buzz. SAVE really works and a BB30 Crankset is far superior to a standard crank. Be smart, listen to the folks and go with the Cannondale!

Cannondale
February 11, 2010 at 4:05 pm, by Pbrannigan
A bike is a personal decision. There are a couple things. Which one is more comfortable for you? I am in the process of selling my Trek and buying a Cannondale for a couple of reasons.
1) The fit… I am short and the Cannondale is a perfect fit.
2) My bike shop in Atlanta did not sell Cannondale when I made the original purchase. Moving back to Connecticut, my shop sells (all three of the brands you have listed… but I like Cannondales)
3) The price is certainly a factor.
I voted for the Cannondale… have fun …ride safe!

Cannondale is the best – hands-down! Wouldn’t ride anything else.

I love the fit of my Cannondale. Zero flex and goes and goes. Like they spec them just for women.

Not even a question – Cannondale is definitely the best option
February 11, 2010 at 5:45 pm, by Lisa Toledo
Definitely Cannondale! I’ve been on two Cannondales over the past ten years. One of our Cannondales has been through 6 AIDS/LifeCycle rides! They are awesome bikes – and Cannondale is a HUGE supporter of AIDS/Lifecycle!

Cannondale is by far the better bike!!
February 12, 2010 at 8:08 am, by Jason Berry
Cannondale led the way with oversized tubing, bigger BB and they still have the lightest, stiffest crank available. And the company is led by good people. Hard to beat.
February 12, 2010 at 8:48 am, by Zoltan
Cannondale for shure!!!
Best customer service, best warranty , best bike!
Light, stiff (BB30) and comfortable (S.A.V.E.).

Clearing up some misinformation–C-dale has NEVER been made in CT. It is manufactured and shipped from Bedford, PA–a little town with a big heart and pride in what its people produce. Cannondale for heart, style, safety, and soul. How can you go wrong?
February 14, 2010 at 8:58 pm, by Greg Schmidt
Cannondale Synapse do I have to say more? not.
February 15, 2010 at 11:08 am, by Dave Vance
Cannondale hands down!!!! The best option and performance with advanced technology for fit and ride above the others.
February 16, 2010 at 12:53 pm, by Theo
Do you really think Chrissy Wellington is a winner BECAUSE she rides a Cannondale? NO, she works hard and is a marquee athlete and you can be too. Still, wouldn’t you rather win on the best bike with the best features and the best ride for the best deal? Unquestionably SYNAPSE!
February 16, 2010 at 3:17 pm, by Jonathan Wirth
Carbon SYNAPSE!!! The SAVE technology really helps cut down the road noise. Not mention having CARBON will do the same. Make sure you have someone fit you to the bike. They can fit a little big. Women with longer torsos and shorter legs will love the cannondales. If you have a shorter torso and longer legs buy the trek Madone 4.7 or 5.2.
