Organic Cotton T-Shirts for Spring!!

Monday, February 1st, 2010

shirt_seaMaiden

Last week I got a shirt from the new Michelle Feis collection.

All of her shirts are  made with organic cotton and are inspired by the notion that “finding that one outstanding T-shirt that you can dress up or dress down is a fashion miracle.”  I’d have to agree!!

Each shirt is designed with a hand painted graphic and original line of poetry and can be easily paired with designer jeans, beach shorts or under a cashmere coat.

I chose the “sea maiden” tee and have literally been living in it!  (I ordered a size up so it would fit over my pregnant belly.)

Check out her beautiful collection today!

A Lot To Say!

Friday, January 15th, 2010

und-love2_medium

Today I’m wearing my brand new scarf and undies (yes, undies…but that’s not my tush in the picture) from A Lot To Say. They’re a radical new clothing company whose manifesto goes like this:

If you think something, say it.

If you believe something, say it.

If you want something, say it.

Because saying it creates new awareness.

Awareness sparks new behavior.

And new behavior inspires us all to be better.

If we speak out, others will act out.

To vote. Recycle. Save.

To think a little more.

To try a little harder.

To live more honestly.

Thoughtfully. Joyfully.

You have a lot to say.

So never be afraid to say it.

Or wear it.

Everyday.

They claim that their tees (and scarves and undies and totes and more, but especially their tees) are more progressive, more green, more environmentally respectful than any other t-shirt out there.

How?

Every A Lot To Say t-shirt is make entirely of recycled bottles, thus removing non-biodegradable material from our landfills, and conserving other raw resources.  They claim that the t-shirts reduce energy consumption by 80%, and eliminate the use of PVC (plastic) products by 100%.

Plus, their tees are dyed with a new process called AirDye. While the traditional way to dye a t-shirt uses, on average, 15-25 gallons of water per t-shirt, AirDye uses no water in the printing process.  And it contains no PVC or toxins in the ink. These recycled polyester t-shirts last up to five times longer than a classic cotton tee and they’re all 100% US made.

Pretty cool.  And they look cool, too, sporting slogans like CHANGE is not only good, it’s essential and BREATHE in wellness, breathe in harmony, breathe in rejuvenation.

They have a yoga line, a celebrity-designed line (coming), and edgier line and even a full line for the dudes.

Men, too often, feel slighted when it comes to eco fashion.  Us ladies get to enjoy closets-full of organic cotton tees and yoga clothes, cozy bamboo bathrobes, delicious recycled cashmere sweaters, luxurious eco-fiber dresses, and so much more.

Connect imageWell, men.  Suffer no more!   Forward-thinking, Chicago-based sustainable retailer, Connect, has launched its first ever e-commerce site C by Connect; the first and only online men’s store with an environmentally and socially responsible focus.

Log on to C by Connect and you’ll find eco brands Nau, Holden Outerwear, Topo Ranch, Coal, Icebreaker, LiViTy, Patagonia Footwear, The Stronghold, and others.  Connect’s private label, SideCar, which uses reclaimed and surplus fabrics and organic cotton, is also available, making the popular Chicago line available for the first time worldwide.  In addition to the men’s fashions, C by Connect includes a “gifts for her” section, as well as sustainable home furnishings.  It’s a one-stop-shop for the forward-thinking individual.

Jonathan Shaun, a Connect Co-Founder and friend of mine, says, “We realized men didn’t have an authentic and conscious online experience to shop.  It’s our honor to finally offer men a place to go where they can find functional and design-driven brands that are progressive and socially responsible,”

Every brand that Connect and their partners work with goes through a rigorous selection process to ensure that it aligns with their values and vision. The Connect manifesto is based on a “not-just-for-profit” method honoring the triple bottom line: planet, people, profit. C by Connect donates 3% of all profits to its Community Investment Portfolio that consists of local, national, and international NGOs.

Sustainable Features of C by Connect:

Do and Look Good with Rain Tees

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

If you were with me at any point this summer there’s a good chance you saw me sporting one of my two favorite tanks or tees of the season:  my Loro Perico “lovebirds” tank or my Rain Forest tee, both by a cool company that you should know about; Andira Rain Tees.

toucan_1Like many of my favorite clothing items, Rain Tees are made with 100% organic cotton and low impact dies.  But this company goes well beyond just that.  The thing that makes their tees stand out is that they are designed, or illustrated, by kids living in endangered rain forests in Central and South America.

Rain Tees founder, Beth Doane, created the line to do some good and bring awareness to the destruction going on in our planet’s rainforests.  As the Rain Tees website beautifully illustrates, rainforests are crucial to our planet’s survival; containing more plant and animal species than anywhere else in the world, controlling global weather patterns, and providing more than 20% of the earth’s oxygen.

But by the year 2040 the world’s rainforests could be gone.  Logging, oil drilling, and agriculture are the biggest threats to our rainforests, displacing families and making the simplest tasks of gathering food and water nearly impossible.

Beth and her team decided to do what they could to bring awareness and stop the destruction.  They donated school supplies to children in endangered rainforests in Central and South America and asked those kids to draw what it is they see happening in their world every day.

Contact-LrgThe resulting drawings have become art work for the Rain Tee collection with each t’shirt or tank featuring their thoughts, illustrations and names.

Little 11 year old Mariela from Peru drew the “Tree of Life” illustration, showing a tree crying leaves over a sad scene of fish floating dead in a stream while a wild animal lays still on the ground.  For Mariela the scene is reality because of destructive oil drilling in her village, but for us it can serve as inspiration to reach out and give back.

The tees have graced the runway at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and the backs and hearts of  people all over.  For every Rain Tee sold, a child in Kids Saving the Rain Forest in Costa Rica gets a tree to plant to replace one that has been destroyed in their homeland.

Pick one up for yourself today or stock up early for Holiday gifts.  The giving season is just around the corner!  Shop  the collection on TheGreenLoop.com
