Traditional Medicinals pioneers the new FairWild certification

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Traditional Medicinals, the leader in medicinal teas and largest Fair Trade Certified herbal tea company in the US, has become the first manufacturer in the US to obtain the new FairWild certification.

The FairWild certification is a sustainability standard, first established in 2006, that sets international social, ecological and quality standards for wild-collected plant species, and provides a fair deal to all those involved throughout the supply chain.

For more than 35 years Traditional Medicinals (founded by Drake Sadler, a good family friend and mentor of mine – he was featured as a Green Bar Profile in my book) has worked with plant collector communities to ensure the most efficacious and highest quality pharmacopoeial grade herbs for its products.  Theirs is a long-standing company commitment to social responsibility, environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.  You may have seen them featured on either of my Discovery Network series Living Fresh or Get Fresh with Sara Snow. I’ve been lucky enough to visit TM at their headquarters in Sebastopol, CA many times.  It comes as no surprise to me that they would pioneer this important and very fitting certification in the US.

“Traditional Medicinals was instrumental in first identifying a critical gap in sustainability certification for wild harvested plants.  Most notably, of the 3,000 total plant species traded globally, only about 900 species – less than one third – are farmed, with the rest being wild-collected.”  Because these wild-collected species are not included under any existing Fair Trade standards, it became evident that a new certification was necessary with a framework for measuring Fair Trade practices on wild collected herbs.

The new certification will be used across all industries that use wild-collected plant species in their products, including medicines, teas, spices, and cosmetics.

Included in the framework is verification of sustainable wild collection including respecting customary rights, fair prices and fair trade premium, preventing negative environmental impacts, maintaing wild resources, and applying good management and business practices.

Traditional Medicinals “Just for Kids” Organic Cold Care and Organic Nighty Night are the first herbal tea products to have the FairWild labeling.  FairWild certified Organic Throat Coat, Organic Licorice and Organic Nettle will be introduced in 2010.

“Cook Up Some Change!” My Program with MicroPlace kicks off today!

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Sara with Bernadette_smallEarlier this year, I had the most fortunate experience of traveling to Kenya with a small team from the Micro-finance group, MicroPlace.

I first became fired up with the idea of micro-lending a few years ago when my family decided to fund a bank and numerous micro-loans in lieu of gifts to one another.  It’s a beautiful idea: your loan of a “micro” amount ($20, $200, or anything above or in between) can completely change the life of someone living in a developing country.

Mom with her boy_smallMost often (84% of the time) these microfinance borrowers are women, and many experts believe the key to ending poverty and its resulting social problems is in empowering women.  Microlending allows this to happen!  According to the MicroPlace site, Although many women are initially hesitant to accept loans, their self confidence soars when they realize they can run a successful business and repay their loans. They use their profits to pay for things that will enhance their family’s welfare, like education, healthcare and nutritious food….making it more likely that future generations will end the cycle of poverty.

For more on how microlending works, visit the “how it works” page and the “small loans; big impact” page.

Only a few months after my family decided to engage in microlending, I found myself sitting over a plate of eggs and hash browns with the  General Manager of MicroPlace, Ashwini Narayanan.

We were soul sisters at once, and not long afterwards we were flying high about the Atlantic Ocean on our way to visit borrowers throughout the African country of Kenya; to hear their amazing stories of how small loans from people like you and me had changed their lives, the lives of their families, and ultimately their communities.

Now, I’m hooked!  And I’m hoping I can get you hooked on micro-lending, too!

Women dancing with beadsThis holiday season, I have partnered with MicroPlace to “Cook Up Some Change” and I hope you’ll join me in doing just that!

Your micro-loan can “serve” 1 to 100, depending on how much change you choose to cook up.  And because you’re loaning the money instead of donating it, you’ll earn interest as the loan is repaid so you can continue to lend over and over; thus recycling your money and helping more and more!

Visit my page on MicroPlace and “Cook Up Some Change” of your own!  This season, give the only gift that truly gives back and keeps on giving – the gift of promise, positivity, and change.

While they’re probably meant for a younger audience than me, I have to say that I’m hooked on Funky Monkey Snacks!

51I7FZXD1IL._SL160_AA115_It’s the Fruit That Crunches – made of all natural, freeze-dried fruit.  They have no added sugar, preservatives, color, or flavors and they’re all completely gluten-free, wheat-free, and dairy-free.

While most freeze dried fruit is made up of teeny tiny pieces of fruit, Funky Monkey Snacks uses a proprietary freeze-drying process on whole slices and large pieces of fruit.  Each one-ounce bag contains three servings of fruit.  Sadly, 72% of Americans don’t eat their fill of fruits and vegetables in a day.  Funky Monkey Snacks can help!

Funky Monkey just announced the addition of three new flavors:

  • Applemon™ (freeze-dried apple and organic cinnamon),
  • MangOJ™ (freeze-dried mango and orange juice), and
  • Pink Pineapple™ (freeze-dried organic pineapple and guava)

This trio joins the existing varieties: Bananamon®, Carnaval Mix™, JiveALime® and Purple Funk®.

As for where to get it:  Funky Monkey Snacks can be found in the produce or snack sections of grocery stores and natural foods stores across the US, including Super Target and Whole Foods.  They retail for about $1.99 – $ 2.49 for each one-ounce bag.

Snack a little funkier today.  I will!

My favorite, by the way….the MangOJ.  Delic!!

Join the “World Biggest Green Sweepstakes”

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

My friend Jill Palermo, founder of WE ADD UP, has created what she calls the “World’s Biggest Green Sweepstakes!”

According to www.WeAddUp.com, “With the recent passing of the American Clean Energy and Security Act by the House of Representatives and international climate talks in Copenhagen this December, many see an opportunity for the U.S. to act as a global leader in clean energy and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.”

homepage_adAnd WE ADD UP wants to be the one to move people to action.  In that vein, they are kicking off the Climate Action Giveaway, a virtual web campaign designed to create awareness and action around global warming across the country.

The contest kicked up last month and continues until the COP15 Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen on December 7th.

Head to www.climategiveaway.com and click on “click here to help” to join the sweepstakes.  Once you’ve signed up you are automatically entered for a chance to win exciting green prizes, including a 4 day backpacking trip at Glacier National Park in Montana, 3 nights at Dragonfly Ranch’s eco-resort in Hawaii, over $2000 worth of custom raised bed gardens shipped to your door, LED Christmas lights, up to $4,300 in IceStone countertops, a year’s supply of gDiapers, $400 diamond simulant earrings by Diamond Nexus Labs, and more.

WE ADD UP’s goal is to get a million people engaged and learning about climate solutions.  Every week, registered participants are sent an email with a call to action; a suggestion of a single action they can take to promote greener living.  Suggestions include e-faxing your Senator to support strong climate legislation or participating in 350.org viral photo activism.

The Best Little Sponges You Could Hope For – TWIST

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Housecleaning doesn’t top most people’s list of favorite activities.  But what if you could do it using a sponge that does the job quickly and effectively, and saves the planet at the same time?!  THEN you’d be rocking your way around that clean home, right?

LR_Twist_naked_trio_V3.tifTwist sponges were made by a bunch of people who, when it came to the kitchen, loved to cook and eat, but hated to clean up the mess.  So they stopped and asked themselves why they didn’t love to clean up.  For them, it turned out, it was mostly about the tools.  ”We didn’t like the tools.  We didn’t like the way they felt.  We didn’t like the way they looked sitting on the counter.  We didn’t like what they were made of.  So we decided to make some little changes.  Nothing big.  Just little things.  Pretty soon we were getting that lovey feeling when we were doing the dishes too.  And a new company was born.”

That company is Twist Sponges.  All of their sponges are 100% biodegradable, dye-free ,and some even come packed in an agave wrapper.  Fun, huh?  Healthy for the planet, too.

DishDumpling_V7I’m a huge fan of their  Dish Dumpling sponge – tough enough to get off the baked-on food, but doesn’t rub your hand raw in the process.  I also love the Sponge Blossoms.  They’re dehydrated sponges which come looped in groups of four on a string.  When you’re ready for another, you simply unloop and give it a drink of water.  Voila – a full sized sponge!  And one of the best is the Euro Sponge.  It’s huge!  Perfect for countertops.

961687-1827988-thumbnailBut because I’m a towel user, not a sponge user, when it comes to countertops, I have to say that one of my favorites is the Bamboo Cloth.  Made of bamboo, of course, this little baby will clean forever and forever, saving the landfill and your pocketbook from all of those disposable paper towels you might have otherwise used!  They wash up in the washing machine and continue to bust countertop butt in the kitchen.  I have a collection in my towel drawer right next to my sink and used them every day.

Granted, it doesn’t take much to get me excited.  It’s the little things!  And when I find a simple product that works for me and for the planet, I’m willing to do (ok, attempt) cartwheels!  To the Twist folks – I’m glad you didn’t like doing dishes, because some great little sponge babies were born as a result.

Ayurvedic Elixirs by Adina

Monday, October 12th, 2009

How does a little Honey Eucalyptus sound to start your day?  Maybe Blackberry Hibiscus after a workout?  Or Mango Orange Chamomile when you’re finally relaxing after a long day’s work?

holistics_inprint_thumb

Adina for Life has launched a new line of elixirs called Adina Holistics.  Based on the ancient Indian medical practice of Ayurveda, Adina roughly means “life in its holistic and spiritual dimension.”
But this is not just another bottled drink company.  The founders of none other than successful beverage companies Odwalla and SoBe joined together to create Adina, a company that lives their mantra drink no evil by staying clear of high fructose corn syrup and synthetic ingredients; instead filling their bottles and cans with the best fairly traded and organically grown ingredients to bring you, not only a satisfying thirst quencher, but a drink that doesn’t just taste good, it does good.
energy_coffee_inprint_thumbYou may already be familiar with Adina’s successful line of coffee beverages.  And now there’s ample reason to fully explore the brand.
Adina Holistics, the newest line, taps into the 5,000-year-old holistic approach to health, Ayurveda, by using time-tested herbal recipes that have been known to exert a normalizing and balancing effect on the body.
“Replenishment that nourishes while helping to achieve harmony is part of our mission. The Adina Holistics line of elixirs contain adaptogenic herbal extracts that are part of the Ayurvedic tradition. These USDA Organic certified herbal ingredients are easily assimilated and used to fortify the immune system and vital organs against the debilitating effects of stress. That’s what we call Enlightened Refreshment!”
Here are just a few of their adaptogenic ingredients:
Ashwagandha has been used as an herbal remedy for hundreds of years. It has many applications, and has been used by Native Americans and Africans to treat inflammation, fevers, and to protect against infection or illness. It has also been used to boost the immune system, improve memory, and to promote overall wellness.
Astragalus has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years, often in combination with other herbs, to strengthen the body against disease. Astragalus is an adaptogen, meaning it helps protect the body against various stresses, including physical, mental, or emotional stress.
Gotu Kola is a rejuvenative nervine recommended for nervous disorders, epilepsy, senility and premature aging. As a brain tonic, it is said to aid intelligence and memory. It strengthens the adrenal glands and cleanses the blood to treat skin impurities. It is said to combat stress and depression, increase libido and improve reflexes. It has also been indicated for chronic venous insufficiency, minor burns, scars, scleroderma, skin ulcers, varicose veins, wound healing, rheumatism, blood diseases, congestive heart failure, urinary tract infections, venereal diseases, hepatitis and high blood pressure.
Tulsi, or holy basil, is an important symbol in the Hindu religious tradition and is worshipped in the morning and evening by Hindus at large. The holy basil is also a herbal remedy for a lot of common ailments including cough, sore throat, heart disorder and stress.
Valerian has been used as a medicinal herb since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome. In addition to sleep disorders, valerian has been used for gastrointestinal spasms and distress, epileptic seizures, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Don’t just drink, drink to health, wellness, and longevity.  I am!

Compostable Party Kit

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Tonight my neighborhood is throwing a progressive cocktail party.  Ok, so that doesn’t really have anything to do with the compostable party kit I’m getting ready to tell you about, but it’s a fun fact all the same.  If it were a different kind of party, a tailgate or a picnic, maybe, THIS would be the party pack I’d turn to.

Made by Ultra Green, they’re a company that is in the practice of making Earth-friendly products using “cutting-edge ecological discoveries.”

In fact, they say that they’ve “gone beyond recycling” by using Tree Free paper products made from sugarcane fiber.

drsoda_2076_322629422After the sugar is squeezed from the cane, historically, the crushed stalk was burned or discarded. No longer. We’ve done away with the environmental nightmare of petroleum-based plastics that take hundreds of years to break down, contaminate our soil, groundwater and oceans. Ultra Green cups and utensils are made from cornstarch. All of our products are 100% biodegradable, compostable, and sustainable.

At Natural Products Expo East a little over a week ago I was introduced to their new Picnic ‘n Party Pack.  It comes with 12 plates, 12 cups, 12 napkins, and 12 utensil sets, all of which can withstand heat and hot liquids, are oil resistant, are safe for the microwave and freezer, and are made in compliance with US FDA guidelines.  And at $15, that’s only about $1.25 per person.

Perfect for picnics, tailgates, and birthday parties, I hope you’ll reach for this instead of the standard disposables for your next get-together!

Could an air filter help you avoid the flu?

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Think you can escape the scary, dirty, infected outdoor, “public” environment by heading home and closing tight your doors and windows?  I’m sorry to say that you are sadly mistaken.

In actuality, the air inside our homes can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than the air outside our homes.  Scary, huh?  Especially when you consider that we spend as much as 90% of our time indoors.

Where does the pollution come from?  Some of it’s coming from your paints, fabric finishes, carpet padding, cleaning products, and other chemical emitting sources.  And some of it you’re bringing into the home with you.  But all of this becomes “sealed in” when our homes are closed up and air tight as so many news homes today are.

These chemical  pollutants, which continue to infect the air we breathe, have been linked to asthma, allergies, headaches, cancers, and worse…and we all know what the viruses and bacteria that lurk all around can do to us.

Though I wouldn’t call myself a germ-phobe by any stretch, I absolutely do everything I can to make sure my loved ones and I are living in a clean home and breathing clean air.

yhst-19583736270871_2072_99971

So recently, in addition to my usual efforts, I have been trying out the T.R.A.C.S. (Total Room Air Cleaning System) air purification system in my home, and I have to say, I’m a huge fan!

It’s the most comprehensive air purification system that I’m aware of – able to clean particulates, microorganisms, odors, and chemicals from the air.  Impressive!  As air travels in it flows first through a carbon pre-filter to remove the larger particulates, odors/chemicals, and gases, then by two UV lamps to destroy bacteria, viruses and molds.  After that the air enters a Hospital Grade HEPA filter, which removes smaller particulate matter and bacteria (it is 99.99% efficient at .3 microns), and finally carbon post-filters remove any leftover odors, chemicals and gases.

Wow, huh?  And maybe the best news this time of year: the UV lamps are even capable of destroying the influenza virus.

And in addition to attacking airborne bacteria and viruses, the UV lamps continually bathe the “dirty” side of the HEPA filter (the side of the filter on which the microorganisms are collected) in UV light, to deactivate any microorganisms that have been collected and prevent bacteria and mold growth on the HEPA filter itself.

The TRACKS Air Cleaners, which are relatively large (15W x 15D x 22H and 50lbs), come in a standard grey or a solid wood box.  But the thing that I really like is that there is a four-speed control with a “whisp-air” silent setting.

The units all retail for around $700 – not exactly cheap, but worth every penny to keep you and your family safe, especially as you seal your home up against the chilling temps.

Herbs to boost the immune system

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Fever

We’re heading into sniffle, cough and flu season.  And while I wouldn’t directly advise anyone against getting a flu shot (I can get in big trouble for doing that), I am happy to share a list of five effective herbs for boosting your immune system and helping your body fight off illness naturally.

  • Astragalus is an herb that has been used by the Chinese for hundreds of years (known traditionally as Huang-qi) to strengthen the body and protect it against illness.
  • Echinacea aids and increases the body’s defenses and immune system against viruses and bacteria.
  • Garlic is extremely powerful as an immune booster and also as an antibacterial agent.
  • St. Johns Wort, though known to most as an antidepressant, has strong antiviral and antibacterial properties and is able to help the body heal and recover more quickly.
  • Usnea is an extremely strong antibacterial agent that some claim works better than penicillin for certain patients and illnesses.

All of these can be found in capsule or often in tincture form and should only be taken as directed. 932226

Remember to eat strengthening foods, to stay warm, to wash your hands, and to get plenty of rest.

Here’s to us all being well!
