Slowing Down, And the Benefits of Meditation

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

I recently did an interview for a site called Hip Mountain Mama.  Here’s a portion of that where I talk about the benefits of even just a few minutes of meditation each day.

You can view the whole interview here.

SuzyWhy do you think it is important for people to slow down and simplify in this day in age?

SaraBecause we’re all, simply put, moving too quickly. Life didn’t use to be like this. We didn’t used to be “plugged in” every minute of the day. We took walks, we sang to the birds, we ran barefoot and sat in silence. All of this is so important for our brains, our muscles, our digestion, and our spirits.
I will always remember one particular day during college. I was stressed and over-worked and worried and I called my mom to cry to her a bit. And she told me that I needed to find a park bench and to sit and watch the squirrels for a while. That’s it. Just watch the squirrels.
It’s still what I do today when I’m overly stressed. I call a time-out and I just sit and watch the birds or the squirrels.
A fantastic practice to get into is a short meditation session in the morning or evening every single day. The simple act of emptying your mind and breathing deep, cleansing breaths can be so incredibly healing.

I do believe in the powerful healing forces of meditation.

Among other things, meditation can:

  • Increase blood flow and slow your heart rate
  • Increase serotonin production to positively enhance mood and behavior.
  • Enhance the immune system.

Try it today!

The Proper Way to Wash Your Hands

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

You use the bathroom; you wash your hands.

You cut some chicken; you wash your hands.

You work in the garden; you wash your hands.

You’ve been doing it countless times a day, all your life, but did you know that there’s a right and a wrong way to wash your hands?

According to Dr. Larry Weiss, Chief Scientist at CleanWell, makers of All Natural Antibacterial Hand Soaps, there is a correct way to wash.  And, says the good doctor, it matters!

Hand Washing 101 from Dr. Larry Weiss

  • If you think your hands need washing, they probably do.
  • When people around you are coughing and sneezing, wash more frequently.  All that coughing and sneezing creates a mist of virus that lands on every surface that you touch.
  • Use the time that you are actually washing your hands to relax.  Don’t try and “just get it done.”  Instead, take five slow, deep breaths as you wash.  Use the moment to calm down and enjoy the sensation of warm water and soap on your hands.  Pay attention to what you are doing and you will do a better job and feel better.  (This is an alternative to singing happy birthday- something that no one actually does and if they do, it makes them feel silly and childish.  Five slow deep breaths will calm you down, reduce your heart rate, clear your mind, and take about 20 seconds – enough time to do a good job washing your hands).
  • Make sure to dry your hands thoroughly.  Wet or damp skin is much more likely to pick up germs from surfaces like doorknobs or countertops.
  • Use a paper towel to open the door when you leave a public restroom.  If there is not a wastebasket outside the door for the paper towel, drop it on the floor outside the door.   If enough people do that, a wastebasket will appear!
  • Teach hygienic habits and educate children about the importance of cleaning their hands immediately after a sneeze or wet cough. A “Bless You” or “Gezundheit” means a trip to the sink or use of a sanitizer whether a tissue was used or not.

CleanWell All Natural Antibacterial Hand Soaps retail for $4.99 and are available at Whole Foods Markets, select Target stores, Babies R Us, Vitamin Shoppe, GNC and Amazon.com.

Melaleuca

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

tagI get asked, on at least a monthly basis, how I feel about Melaleuca.

In case you’re like I was and don’t know much about this company, here’s some background.  Melaleuca develops, manufactures and sells over 350 of “the world’s leading wellness products for your home and family.” They say they carefully craft products with the highest standards of safety, health, and wellness in mind.

Ok, but a lot of companies say that, so I did my best to dig farther.

Their products are concentrated, thus cutting down on packaging waste.  In fact, if all consumer product companies followed their lead in this regard, each year landfills in North America would have 890 million tons less plastic waste; enough to fill the entire state of Delaware with a 3-foot layer of plastic.  Cool, I’m definitely a fan of concentrated products.

What about the ingredients?  All of their home-cleaning EcoSense products are:

  • free of chlorine bleach
  • free of ammonia
  • free of formaldehyde
  • non-caustic
  • super concentrated
  • made of ingredients that are sustainably source whenever possible

tub_tileAnd they say that the EcoSense formulas are developed around the most effective naturally derived ingredients. Here are some examples:

Sol-U-Guard Botanical® 2x Concentrate teams up two potent botanical germ killers: citric acid and thyme oil. This dynamic duo kills 99.9% of common household germs on hard, non-porous surfaces in less than 10 minutes.

Rustic Touch® does its beautiful work with carnauba wax, the strong natural wax that protects but never dulls or yellows.

Aside from relying on natural cleaning agents, they also use trigger sprayers instead of aerosols in order to reduce the chances of inhalation.

So, that all sounds pretty good.  I was recently sent a number of their cleaning products to try.  So far, no complaints with how well they work, but I was finally able to get a look at their full ingredients list (something that I couldn’t find anywhere on their websites) and found that they still list ingredients like “fragrance” and “preservative” – two words I don’t like to see.

For now, I think I’ll stick with my other natural cleaning favorites or the old standbys – vinegar, baking soda, and soap.

Achy back? New Mat Could Make You Feel Sublime Instead

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Has cooking become a drag from standing on a hard floor? Knees aching from kneeling on tile to bathe your toddler? Thinking of throwing in the towel because of pain from standing to fold clothes?  Sublime comes to the rescue with the newest Anti-Fatigue Comfort Mats.

12667616912611P.JPGThe Anti-Fatigue Comfort Mats are made out of a new technology that is environmentally-friendly, non-toxic and manufactured without the use of toxic, heavy metals or formaldehyde.  And the cushion can actually help relieve foot and back discomfort.

The main reason I really like them is because of their non-toxic, environmentally-friendly plasticizer that reduces PVC material to help cut back on harmful chemicals associated with PVC and phthalates.

While a lot of people like the added cushion on the kitchen floor for cooking, I was looking for comfort in the laundry room.  I hate folding laundry (who doesn’t, seriously) and it becomes an absolutely unbearable task when the concrete floor beneath my feet starts to creep up into my knees and back.

This comfort mat helps and I don’t have to worry about what it’s off-gassing into my home.

You can find the mats at Bed, Bath & Beyond and Amazon.com.  They come in three patterns and six colors and sell for $79 or less (Amazon has them for $69 and BB&B has them for $59).

Meet Clean Well Today!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

See me in an airport security line and you’ll surely see me placing my little plastic bag full of pint-sized liquids into the security bin.  And in that little bag you’ll undoubtably see a travel-sized version of CleanWell Hand Sanitizer.  This is because I don’t go anywhere without it.  I have them in my purse, my car, even my home. And while I’m not a germ-phobe by any means, I do like to know that my hands are clean, especially after I’ve been rushing through airports and fondling foods in grocery stores.

CleanWell uses a patented blend of essential plant oils that are lab proven to kill 99.9% of germs including MRSA, Salmonella and Staph.  It is safe for kids and 100% biodegradable.

In fact, CleanWell is the first, alcohol free sanitizer and antibacterial hand soap to combat germs naturally.  Imitating nature’s own germ fighting technique, the sustainable technology in CleanWell is poised to replace toxic and synthetic alternatives for good.

Before CleanWell, none of the antibacterial products on the market had the proven germ killing effectiveness necessary to prevent illness without exposing people to dangerous chemicals that might compromise their health or environment.  That was then; CleanWell is now.  With a first-of-its-kind natural chemistry, CleanWell proudly introduces a unique formulation of plant essential oils proven to meet FDA standards for 99.99% germ killing efficacy, and the only safe and effective natural alternative to the toxic ingredients found in most antibacterial and disinfecting products.

CleanWell products also do not include the controversial ingredient, Triclosan, widely used as an antibacterial in household hand sterilization products.  Triclosan is a known endocrine disruptor, a synthetic chemical that when absorbed into the body either mimics or blocks hormones and disrupts the body’s normal functions.

Since discovery CleanWell’s hand sanitizer, I’ve also become a fan of their subtly scented foaming hand soaps, which now grace the countertops of many sinks in my house.

Find CleanWell products at Target, Whole Foods, Amazon.com and BathAndBodyWorks.com.

Try a hammock for your health

Friday, November 20th, 2009

This time of year can be quite stressful.  Gifts to buy, pies and cookies to bake, dust bunnies to clean in preparation for the guests you have to pick up from the airport.  Relax?  Yeah right!

What if relieving all that stress was as easy as kicking back for just a few in a hammock hung in the backyard or, even, back of the basement?

Sounds pretty good, right?

Here’s how it works.

According to research on the hammock site, Hangouts.com, everyday people, as well as trained therapists, have been using hammocks and hanging chairs as a means of relieving stress and physical aches and pains.

Back and neck pain is often quite quickly and easily relieved by lying perpendicular on a hammock.  To do so, you’ll find yourself lying across the hammock, rather than lengthwise.

According to Hangouts.com (also the source for the picture here), The support removes pressure points and thus allows the muscles of the body to relax. Support without pressure points allows the blood to flow to all body parts and thus maximizes the healing potential that our bodies have. Without pressure points the verdabrae of the body can begin to align themselves.

The hammock works, in a sense, like a massage, helping you achieve a similar physical state of muscle relaxation equivalent to a massage session.  Pregnant women have also found that hammocks help to relive prenatal pains and allow them to sleep more soundly.

Many enjoy sitting cross-legged, in a meditative yoga sit, in their hammock.  Doing so, allows the body and mind to relax so they can achieve a deep meditation and a state of muscle relaxation similar to a yoga session.

The swinging and spinning motions of a hammock can even help Autism patients.  By stimulating cerebral activity it can help  increase one’s ability to focus and concentrate.  Good not only for Autistic children, but for those suffering from ADD, ADHD, or for any of us who lack the ability to focus from time to time.

But if you find yourself without a backyard or front porch fitting for a hammock (or weather unfitting at the moment), don’t worry.  Hammocks can be hung and enjoyed just as easily indoors.

orange-grey-sThough I remember swinging in our old rope hammock as a child, I more recently tried out a slicker version from Eagle’s Nest Outfitters.

The company was founded in the summer of 1999 by brothers Peter and Paul, who decided to leave the traditional workplace behind and make hanging out a full time occupation.

The brothers wanted something that would not only challenge them but would also be laid back, allowing them to live their lives in no particular way but their own. Starting with a sewing machine and a vision, they began sewing hammocks and slap straps in their sister’s garage.

They first traveled the  East Coast in a beat up old mini van, setting up shop selling and sleeping in whatever parking spots they could find. The response was beyond their expectations and soon the boys found themselves established high up on the Blue Ridge Mountains where they set up full-time shop supplying  hammocks and accessories to like-minded people all over the world.

Sounds like a story I’d like to be a part of!

Find their fantastic collection of beautiful and well-made hammocks and accessories at EaglesNestOutfittersInc.com.

Traditional Medicinals pioneers the new FairWild certification

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Traditional Medicinals, the leader in medicinal teas and largest Fair Trade Certified herbal tea company in the US, has become the first manufacturer in the US to obtain the new FairWild certification.

The FairWild certification is a sustainability standard, first established in 2006, that sets international social, ecological and quality standards for wild-collected plant species, and provides a fair deal to all those involved throughout the supply chain.

For more than 35 years Traditional Medicinals (founded by Drake Sadler, a good family friend and mentor of mine – he was featured as a Green Bar Profile in my book) has worked with plant collector communities to ensure the most efficacious and highest quality pharmacopoeial grade herbs for its products.  Theirs is a long-standing company commitment to social responsibility, environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.  You may have seen them featured on either of my Discovery Network series Living Fresh or Get Fresh with Sara Snow. I’ve been lucky enough to visit TM at their headquarters in Sebastopol, CA many times.  It comes as no surprise to me that they would pioneer this important and very fitting certification in the US.

“Traditional Medicinals was instrumental in first identifying a critical gap in sustainability certification for wild harvested plants.  Most notably, of the 3,000 total plant species traded globally, only about 900 species – less than one third – are farmed, with the rest being wild-collected.”  Because these wild-collected species are not included under any existing Fair Trade standards, it became evident that a new certification was necessary with a framework for measuring Fair Trade practices on wild collected herbs.

The new certification will be used across all industries that use wild-collected plant species in their products, including medicines, teas, spices, and cosmetics.

Included in the framework is verification of sustainable wild collection including respecting customary rights, fair prices and fair trade premium, preventing negative environmental impacts, maintaing wild resources, and applying good management and business practices.

Traditional Medicinals “Just for Kids” Organic Cold Care and Organic Nighty Night are the first herbal tea products to have the FairWild labeling.  FairWild certified Organic Throat Coat, Organic Licorice and Organic Nettle will be introduced in 2010.

“Cook Up Some Change!” My Program with MicroPlace kicks off today!

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Sara with Bernadette_smallEarlier this year, I had the most fortunate experience of traveling to Kenya with a small team from the Micro-finance group, MicroPlace.

I first became fired up with the idea of micro-lending a few years ago when my family decided to fund a bank and numerous micro-loans in lieu of gifts to one another.  It’s a beautiful idea: your loan of a “micro” amount ($20, $200, or anything above or in between) can completely change the life of someone living in a developing country.

Mom with her boy_smallMost often (84% of the time) these microfinance borrowers are women, and many experts believe the key to ending poverty and its resulting social problems is in empowering women.  Microlending allows this to happen!  According to the MicroPlace site, Although many women are initially hesitant to accept loans, their self confidence soars when they realize they can run a successful business and repay their loans. They use their profits to pay for things that will enhance their family’s welfare, like education, healthcare and nutritious food….making it more likely that future generations will end the cycle of poverty.

For more on how microlending works, visit the “how it works” page and the “small loans; big impact” page.

Only a few months after my family decided to engage in microlending, I found myself sitting over a plate of eggs and hash browns with the  General Manager of MicroPlace, Ashwini Narayanan.

We were soul sisters at once, and not long afterwards we were flying high about the Atlantic Ocean on our way to visit borrowers throughout the African country of Kenya; to hear their amazing stories of how small loans from people like you and me had changed their lives, the lives of their families, and ultimately their communities.

Now, I’m hooked!  And I’m hoping I can get you hooked on micro-lending, too!

Women dancing with beadsThis holiday season, I have partnered with MicroPlace to “Cook Up Some Change” and I hope you’ll join me in doing just that!

Your micro-loan can “serve” 1 to 100, depending on how much change you choose to cook up.  And because you’re loaning the money instead of donating it, you’ll earn interest as the loan is repaid so you can continue to lend over and over; thus recycling your money and helping more and more!

Visit my page on MicroPlace and “Cook Up Some Change” of your own!  This season, give the only gift that truly gives back and keeps on giving – the gift of promise, positivity, and change.
