Are there weed killers in your water?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

How safe is your drinking water?  It’s a question that many have asked for years, but that has once again sparked a recent debate.

According to new studies, levels of Atrazine, a weed killer used especially in the summer months by throngs of gardeners, lawn care workers and farmers alike, are at potentially unsafe levels in home drinking water.  Water systems data from across the US shows that 33 million Americans have been exposed to atrazine through their home water taps.

But there are, understandably, two sides to the question of how dangerous atrazine is.  While some say it’s fine, others claim the chemical can disrupt menstrual cycles and may be associated with birth defects and low birth weight.

How do you know if it’s in your water?  The EPA requires water systems to notify residents of the area if the yearly average levels of atrazine exceeds 3 parts per billion.  But (here’s where it gets dicey and potentially dangerous) in high use times, particularly during summer months, one-day exposures can jump up as high as 297 parts per billion and water systems are not required to notify anyone.

While pressure is put on the EPA to respond to this issue, how can you stay safe and avoid atrazine at home?

Some say that it’s best to forego tap water in favor of bottled water during summer months when use of the weed killer is at its highest, on crops, lawns, gardens, parks, golf courses, and so on.

But a  greener option is to install a home filtration system.  Sites like Pure Water for Less sell everything from countertop filtration systems to more advanced reverse osmosis systems.  And nearly every grocery and big box store sells affordable tap and pitcher filters.

Arguably, reverse osmosis systems provide the most complete filtration and elimination of unwanted chemicals and residues.  They’re also the most expensive; but when you compare the one-time cost to years of buying bottled water, they don’t compare.  Not to mention, of course, the savings to our landfills!

To learn more about levels in your area, check  the Natural Resources Defense Council’s site where they have mapped levels of atrazine across the US.  http://www.nrdc.org/health/atrazine/

Let’s all fight for safer drinking water!

Hit a spa for relaxation and healing

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Last week I made it to the iSpa (International Spa Association) media event in NYC.  Yes, it was everything you might imagine: a beautifully decorated space, delicious foods served on trays that seemed to just float by, champagne flowing, and treatments from spas around the world up for the sampling.iSpa

But what I really walked away with was this; spas can be a wonderful escape for a week or weekend with girlfriends, your significant other, or on your own.  But they don’t have to be just that.  Spas are also a fantastic way to slow down, recharge, and heal, even if all you have is an afternoon or an hour.

According to a 2008 iSpa “Global Consumer Survey” the number 1 reason people around the world spa is to relax and relieve/reduce stress.  But in 11 of the 15 countries surveyed, overall wellness and health was one of the top three reasons consumers spa.

While in a state of bliss at the iSpa event, I experienced an abbreviated luminary facial from the spa at The Grand Del Mar in San Diego.  It was called the Luminous and, though generally a 90 minute treatement, I experienced about 5 minutes and walked away positively glowing!

Even if you can’t make it to The Grand Del Mar, try this one at home.  Get a fantastic facial oil (my favorite is the Rose & Sandalwood Oil by Aromatherapy Associates) and gently press it into key pressure points on your face: your temples, beside your nose, in the furrow of your brow, and so on.

This just goes to show that spas are not only for pampering, they’re for overall health and wellness.  Invest in yourself today!

How posh is your pouch?

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

At first, I’ll admit, I thought it was a bit overdone.  I mean, who really needs such fancy reusable pouches?  But then I tried a few and I’m hooked!

sandwichbagtbThese pouches, by Posh Pouches, are covered in beautiful and playful fabrics, and lined to handle anything from drippy or sticky treats to jewelry and electronics.  They seal tight with a velcro strip across the top.  The sandwich bag is my favorite size as it’s big enough for a sandwich but also great for trail mix, a piece of fruit, or a big bundle of sliced veggies.

The pouches are made by two mom friends who realized one day that they were using 1400 ziplock bags every year between their children at school and their husbands at work.  Though originally focused on saving money, they realized that by creating cute and functional reusable pouches they could keep an endless stream of plastic out of the landfills, thus helping to save the environment for their children and children’s children.

The pouches retail for less than $10 each so stock up for back-to-school lunches, post work-out snacks, or picnics in the park.

Environmentally friendly wallpaper has arrived!

Monday, August 17th, 2009

They say the quickest way to update your house is through a coat of paint.

Why not go one step further and liven up a room with environmentally friendly wallpaper?!

New from Wallquest are two brand new lines: Rimini by Printers Guild Productions and Eco Chic by Sandpiper Studios.  Neither one is your grandma’s wallpaper!

Rimini and Eco Chic are both printed on paper from sustainable forests, using water-based, non-toxic inks.

cl10104_smRimini is also made with non-woven substates that come from natural, renewable, recycled materials!  This new manufacturing process allows the paper to breathe – keeping it and your wall mold and mildew free!

The Rimini collection features semi and high-sheet metallic and opaque combinations with more contemporary motifs like feathery scrolls, flowing vines, exotic zebra stripes and dramatic harlequin patterns.  The collection is available in 18 patterns and single rolls retail for $84.99-87.99.

The Eco Chic collection promotes a sense of serenity along with the boldness of urban design.  It is available in 22 patterns based around earth elements like grass, vines, leaves, trees, branches, wood grains, birds and butterflies.  Single rolls retail for $56-62.

New Environmentally friendly batteries finally available everywhere!

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Calling themselves the first “eco-respectful, high performance batteries on the market,” Fuji has announced that their EnviroMAX batteries are now available in Target stores nationwide.

lnav-featureBatteries have long been one of the necessary evils for green-living gadget gurus.  But now they don’t have to be.

Twenty years ago Fuji was able to make batteries mercury-free.  Today, they’ve gone steps beyond that with the EnviroMAX battery.

  • no poisonous cadmium, lithium, or mercury
  • no ingredients harmful to the environment
  • harmlessly disposable through normal waste systems
  • landfill safe as they degrade
  • packaged with recycled paper and fully recyclable PET plastic
  • performance and longevity equal to or exceeding other equal brands

And maybe the best part is, they’re affordable.

The Super Alkaline retails at $3.99 and is perfect for toys, remote controls, and flashlights.  The Digital Alkaline sells for $5.99 and is engineered for high-drain electronic devices like digital cameras, radios, and video games.  Both can be found now at Target.

Cashmere for your workout?

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Oh, I know.  You’re very posh.  You sip champagne nightly, your orange juice is always freshly squeezed, and you wouldn’t dream of working out in anything but 100% cashmere.

thumbnail_j17aOk, maybe the first two aren’t true but the last could be thanks to Jonano’s ecoKashmere active line, with pants like the Ari Yoga Pant.  It’s not quite cashmere as you know it but it feels remarkably like it and is infinitely better for the environment.  This supple fabric is a viscose blend made from organic bamboo, and certified organic cotton, with a splash of spandex for stretch recovery.

The Nadia Long Leggings are perfect for yoga, dance, or a hike in the woods.  They have that wide waistband that we all can’t live without and are the right length to look cute with a tunic and a cute pair of shoes as well.

Made of the same supple blend of organic cotton and bamboo, the Ari Bra Lined Cami works as well in a pilates class as it does under your favorite hoodie or blazer.

Little Green Cleaning Machine

Monday, August 10th, 2009

We stood Wild West style, in a face off.  Me against the new Bissell Little Green machine, both of us ready to go to battle on a dirty house after a long season of summer-time fun.

1400-sHere’s what I knew about this Little Green. I knew that it boasted a long hose with a nice, strong spray and suction to help clean and dry all in one step.  I could see that it had a long power cord, and that it was compact enough to stow in any closet…even in my 90 year old home.

But here’s the other cool stuff that I learned that made this Little Green machine, well, green.

  • The vacuum itself is made from post-consumer recycled waste, making it a much more sustainable-materials vacuum than most others.
  • The tanks, hose, and certain other elements are all completely PVC free.
  • The carton is 100% recyclable – no styrofoam or other inserts; just cardboard.
  • The Bissell family (file this away in extraneous info)  invented the floor sweeper back in 1876.  And if you look at the product information insert (call me a dork, but I always read the manual) you’ll see a little note written by the company CEO – Mark Bissell.  I don’t know if it’s still a family run company, but it at least appears that way.   Pretty cool in my opinion.

And, I’ll tell you what, that Little Green Bissell did the trick. So the next time you pull up your Wii Fit mat and see how soiled the carpet all around it has become from your excessive sweating and spilled energy drinks, you might just want to reach for a Little Green eco-cleaning machine.  It’ll do the trick without making a mess of the planet.

Better hydration!

Friday, August 7th, 2009

One of my favorite hydration modes when I’m especially low on electrolytes is coconut water.  Coconut water is one of the best all-natural sports and energy drinks available, especially effective at replacing lost electrolytes when recovering from an intense workout, or even an illness.

And my favorite coconut water has always been by a company called ONE Natural Experience.

one-waterBut hold the phone, because ONE doesn’t only have great coconut water, they have a single-serving water even you, the responsible greenie, can feel good about.

  • O.N.E. water is sustainably sourced from the Blue Mountains in Eastern Canada
  • O.N.E. water comes in an eco-friendly tetra pak, made mostly of paper that is easily recycled and keeps impurities out.
  • O.N.E. water gives back.  100% (yes, 100%!) of profits are donated to worthy causes including disaster relief, cancer research and education, and many others.
  • O.N.E. water  cares.  Right now, one in six people (1.1 billion across the globe) don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water.  O.N.E. water is working to raise awareness of the water crisis and find ways to give back.

So, raise a glass (or a tetra-paked water) to O.N.E.!  Let’s be O.N.E. with better hydration.

Loving the new Perfect Organics mint chocolate shea butter!

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

sb_mintcI’ve been a longtime fan of Perfect Organics: their Shea Butter Lip Balm, the Vegan Lip and Cheek Shimmer, and of course their 100% Shea Butter.  But, stop the presses, because I just tried a new flavor of their Shea Butter lotion and I almost ate my hand off.

It’s their Mint Chocolate Shea Butter

Shea Butter, extracted from the nut of the karite tree, is one of the most healing, nourishing, soothing, and protective emollients available. Perfect Organics’ all-natural Mint Chocolate Shea Butter is blended with the refreshing and softening benefits of organic mint essential oil and organic cocoa butter.

Yesterday this little tub o’ butter saved my hands!  After washing my hands for the umpteenth time (I was traveling) I started digging in my purse for something to relieve the dryness.  The Mint Chocolate Shea Butter did the trick without leaving my hands greasy.  I even rubbed a bit on the apples of my cheeks which were feeling a little dehydrated from the airplane as well.

The only downside:  After applying, I could hear a low grumble from the stomach of the guy sitting next to me on the plane.   I think he was dreaming about a Peppermint Patty.
