The men’s NCAA March Madness Final Four is officially set. Congratulations to Syracuse, Wichita State, Louisville and Michigan (and their fans)! The ultimate winner will be decided one week from today, but there’s another heated competition going on for a fitness-related trophy this week: Gold’s Gym’s March Music Madness.
In this battle, fans and celebrities, including Will Ferrell and Gabby Reece, nominate their favorite workout songs. Each round, tracks are voted on at marchmusicmadness.com and winnowed down until a victor emerges on April 18. “We thought it would allow for some spirited debate and, more importantly, help people discover new music for their workout playlists,” says Dave Reiseman, vice president of communications for Gold’s Gym.
This program caught our attention with the awesome, varied selection of tunes, but we were completely sold once we heard that the person who nominated the winning song gets $5,000 to award to their charity of choice.
After listening to the sweet 16 with us, go vote and make your voice heard. Fans who select the most winning songs win sweet gym swag and memberships!
“Music is just as much a part of the workout experience as a towel or water bottle. The right song can be just the motivation you need to push through when you feel like quitting, or the inspiration you need to take your workout to the next level,” Reiseman says. We couldn’t agree more.
Now tell us: Which of the contenders do you hope to see come out on top in the music bracket?

Fit Blogger We Love: Iowa Girl Eats
Written on May 12, 2011 at 2:43 pm , by Karla Walsh

Kristin of Iowa Girl Eats loves to indulge with anything sweet.
We adore the gorgeous food photos, tempting recipes and down-to-earth attitude that Kristin shares on Iowa Girl Eats. And her philosophy of “Eat Well. Run Often. Travel Far.” is something we certainly support! Kristin recently told us about her top three go-to snacks and the song that helps her ab exercises fly by.
I’m happiest when I’m: Exploring a new city, state or country with my husband. We love to travel, and the best way to learn about a new place – and stay fit while you’re doing it – is to see it on foot.
My fave fit snack: A sliced Honeycrisp apple and sharp cheddar cheese is my ideal snack, with sliced bananas dalloped with Justin’s Maple Almond Butter or Honey Graham Clif Z Bars getting honorable mention.
My biggest indulgence: Candy. I have the sweet tooth of a 12-year old! Sour Patch Kids, Starbursts, Skittles and Sour Punch Straws—I love it all!
Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: I can’t help the fact that “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” by Def Leppard happens to have the perfect beat to do crunches to…
My fitness mantra: My favorite form of exercise is running, and whenever I feel like quitting mid-run I use a variety of techniques to keep myself going. Repeating “pain is temporary, accomplishment is forever,” or “anyone can do anything for 5 minutes!” in my head always gets me a little bit farther!

Fit Blogger We Love: Peanut Butter Fingers
Written on April 14, 2011 at 4:31 pm , by Sarah D'Angelo

Dig in! Julie from Peanut Butter Fingers enjoys a fit, healthy lifestyle with occasional treats.
In September 2009, Julie decided to launch her blog, Peanut Butter Fingers, as a way to write about her passions (health and fitness), share recipes and inspire herself to get more creative in the kitchen. We enjoy following along, and adore her fun-loving attitude as well as her balanced approach to living a healthy lifestyle. Here’s what keeps Julie moving:
I’m happiest when I’m: Doing something outside, like hiking or boating, with my husband and our crazy dog, Sadie. I also love swimming in the ocean with my mom, dad and sister.
My biggest indulgence: Ice cream. I could eat my body weight in ice cream and still want more! My husband thinks I need my own spin-off version of the show Man v. Food called Girl v. Dessert where I dominate sweet treats all the time.
Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: My iPod is stocked with Disney songs and soundtracks from various musicals. Sometimes it’s hard to not start singing in the middle of a workout!
My fitness mantra: I have a bunch! My fall back mantras include: “I never regret a workout” and “You are just one workout away from a good mood.” I did a whole blog post about positive workout mantras and love them. So many times it is mind over matter in the gym, and mantras are a great way to get in the zone.
My motivation comes from: My mom. The optimism, grace and unwavering strength she showed throughout her breast cancer treatment was truly inspiring. Her diagnosis also shifted my mindset from working out and eating healthy for vanity reasons to doing so for my health.

Yoga Vacation + 5 Perfect Yoga Songs
Written on February 1, 2011 at 3:51 pm , by Bethany Gumper
Yoga + beach + live music = The perfect girlfriends’ getaway. Wanderlust Festival is coming up at The Standard Spa in Miami Beach, Florida, so get your om on from March 17 to 20.
Learn from a slew of different yoga teachers, including Cameron Shayne, founder of Budokon (that’s the yoga-meets-martial-arts practice that’s adored by celebs such as Courtney Cox and Malin Ackerman). That’s his picture — impressive, right?
In addition to poolside meditation workshops and live music performances, there will be more than 30 yoga classes offered. We’re intrigued by Christy Nones’s “Twist and Shout into Backbends, the Anusara Way.” We caught up with Nones, who teaches the popular H2OM yoga class at The Standard Spa, to get her go-to yoga playlist (it’s about 30 minutes):
“All I Need” – Air
“Calling” – Nightmares on Wax
“Indra” – Thievery Corporation
“La Femme D’Argent” – Air
“Marilyn Set Me Free” – Casino Versus Japan
The festival isn’t cheap, but you get some serious yoga bang for your buck: Rates start at $1,530 (that’s three nights/four days and includes yoga, music, lodging and access to the spa). If you share a room with two of your yoga-loving pals, it breaks down to $750 per person. For details, check out the festival’s website.
Namaste!

Girl Talk's new album cover for All Day (Photo Courtesy of Pitch Perfect)
While the words “girl talk” may bring back haunting memories of junior high gossip, the Girl Talk on our radar these days is a 29-year-old musician named Gregg Gillis. He is the man behind Girl Talk’s the musical mashups–tunes that sample some of our favorite rock, hip-hop and pop songs and flow them all together in a fun, seamless way.
Girl Talk’s fifth album, All Day, was released on November 15 and can be downloaded (FREE!) on his label’s website here. Where else can you hear 372 song snippets over the course of 71 minutes from the likes of Jay-Z, Nine Inch Nails, Justin Timberlake, John Lennon and Lady Gaga?
To learn more about his eclectic taste and creative style, we spoke with Gillis about how he entered the music industry and how he stays fit for his energy-filled stage shows. Read more
