Music Monday: 15 Songs That Put Some Spring in Your Step

Written on March 24, 2014 at 10:13 am , by

Daylight savings time has given us longer days (seriously, it’s so nice to leave the office and still have some sunshine) and a few days of warmer weather. Even though it still seems like Mother Nature can’t quite make up her mind about sending us into the next season, I’m ready to officially declare it Spring. And with that comes a myriad of refreshing—new clothes, cleaner diet (just say no to all the comfort food of winter) and fresh beats. I’m adding fun, poppy tunes to my workout playlist, inspiring me to push the pace just a bit more these days. Go ahead and steal ‘em yourself—I won’t tell.

In other music news, the song “#Selfie” has gone viral. While it’s not my cup of tea, I’d say it’s pretty perfect for those of you who love heavy techno beats during a hardcore sweat session. Or maybe I’m wrong, and it should be heard in dance clubs only? Give it a listen, and sound off in the comments below: workout do or don’t?

Music is everything for me when I’m out on the road training for races—there’s nothing better than a good beat and a sweaty body! I like to switch up my playlists frequently, and they usually have a mix of pop, hip/hop, and techno tunes, but lately I’ve been running to a lot of Mac Miller. He’s got sick rhymes and awesome beats, perfect for an energizing run. One song you’ll always find on my playlist though is Kanye West & Jay-Z’s “No Church in the Wild.” No matter where I’m at on my run– tackling a hill or flying down a straightaway–it’s always the perfect pump-up song, and it pushes me to run harder and sprint faster.

I mostly listen to alternative music, but for working out, I have a lot of hip hop, rap and pop on heavy rotation to pump me up. This mix is a little of bothgood for a medium-length run at a moderate pace with bursts of speed built right in. And since I’m running in NYC, it includes “Empire State of Mind,” which I could listen to on repeat for an entire run and still not get sick of it.

On long, slow runs, I listen to the “This American Life” podcasts, but for tempo runs, I need the musical equivalent of caffeine. I need the kind of songs that, even if I’d just eaten a burrito bowl and was in the middle of a “Teen Mom” marathon, make me get up off the couch and dance. If it makes me feel like dancing, it makes me feel like running. Like a good meal, a good playlist is all about balance: Some bubblegum pop my teenage sister is probably too old for, some rap I like to think she’s too young to be listening to, and a little indie-darling stuff I hope she thinks I’m cool for liking.

The men’s NCAA March Madness Final Four is officially set. Congratulations to Syracuse, Wichita State, Louisville and Michigan (and their fans)! The ultimate winner will be decided one week from today, but there’s another heated competition going on for a fitness-related trophy this week: Gold’s Gym’s March Music Madness.

In this battle, fans and celebrities, including Will Ferrell and Gabby Reece, nominate their favorite workout songs. Each round, tracks are voted on at marchmusicmadness.com and winnowed down until a victor emerges on April 18. “We thought it would allow for some spirited debate and, more importantly, help people discover new music for their workout playlists,” says Dave Reiseman, vice president of communications for Gold’s Gym.

This program caught our attention with the awesome, varied selection of tunes, but we were completely sold once we heard that the person who nominated the winning song gets $5,000 to award to their charity of choice.

After listening to the sweet 16 with us, go vote and make your voice heard. Fans who select the most winning songs win sweet gym swag and memberships!

“Music is just as much a part of the workout experience as a towel or water bottle. The right song can be just the motivation you need to push through when you feel like quitting, or the inspiration you need to take your workout to the next level,” Reiseman says. We couldn’t agree more.

Now tell us: Which of the contenders do you hope to see come out on top in the music bracket?
