The New Stylish, Sporty Sunglasses from Oakley and the Tone It Up Girls

Equal parts fun and fit is how we’d describe the dynamic duo that is the Tone It Up Girls, Katrina Hodgson and Karena Dawn. They developed their own fitness following through YouTube workout videos, fitness products, a Bravo reality TV show and a bikini line. Now Karena and Katrina have teamed up with Oakley, creating a fashionably fit sunglasses line. Available at BeachBabe.com, the “Oakley Sunnies” range in price from $170 for the “Katrina” aviators, and $190 for the “Karena” activewear frame. While many activewear sunglasses traditionally have a sportier look, these styles still function as activewear shades, yet they are ultra stylish for everyday wear as well. Finally, the best of both worlds!

We met up with the California cuties at the launch party in New York City last week to chat about their new sunglasses line and get the inside scoop on their bikini body secrets.

What inspired you to collaborate with Oakley to make a sunglasses line?

Karena: We were like, “Let’s do it!” Oakley is actually the only brand of active sunglasses I’ve ever worn. I have been wearing them for like 8 years—way back when I first started competing in triathlons.

Katrina: We love all of their sunglasses. They are lightweight—so, you don’t get headaches.

Karena: Kat and I do painting and drawing and we love design—so it seemed like the perfect match to design sunglasses. We incorporated some of our artwork. The blue and green colors from my painting of the wave, which hangs in my house, and they are on the inside of the “Karena” frame. And, the colors in Kat’s painting of the mermaid inspired the color of the “Katrina” aviators.

What are some features women should look for when buying a pair of active wear sunglasses?

Katrina: I think it’s good to have someone fit you so you can get a good pair for your face. If the lenses are resting on your cheeks, then maybe you need a smaller frame, or they just need to tighten up the nose pad—there are so many things that I didn’t even know about sunglasses until I started working with Oakley, [so getting that fit right is important].

Summer Sunglasses: Editor Tested, Fashion Approved

Breezy running shorts, check! Rockin’ playlist, check! Sunscreen, check! Sunglasses, err, check?

How do you protect your eyes?

Sunglasses are a summer staple, but when it comes to hitting the pavement and logging miles, my shades usually stay tucked away at home. Throwing a baseball cap on before a run is enough shade for my squints, but for other FITNESS staffers, eyewear is a huge part of their summer workout wardrobe. The only problem…finding the perfect fit!

Enter Under Armour. We’ve known about the company, well, forever, but we just got acquainted with the eyewear line. With a wide range of  styles, there’s something for every athlete (in true Under Armour fashion), and of course for every fashion-forward diva like yours truly (I’m loving this pair for my days at the beach!). When put to the test by our trusty editors, these suckers performed. And well.

Our super-runner Editorial Assistant, Lauren, fell in love with the sleek look, and cool-colored lenses of the Igniter. “The blue lenses cut the glare from the sun for a no squint, headache-free run!” Bonus: mirrored lenses are a huge fashion trend this summer, so Lauren definitely achieves the fashion-forward flair she craves while running the streets of her hood.

For our Web Editor, Colleen, finding an adjustable and cushy nose piece is key, and the Zone II has the perfect no-slip grip. “They stayed put without any sliding around on a very sticky, humid morning,” she notes. “That says something because I was extremely sweaty!” Another cool feature that similar styles, like the Core Switch and the Core, have: adjustable temple cushions, which creates a more personalized and comfortable wearing experience.

While testing her pair out one sunny weekend, Assistant Web Editor, Samantha, realized she could use these shades (she tried the Igniter II in a black/red combo) for more than one activity. “I used my sunglasses all weekend while volunteering at Relay for Life, went for a run in them, and am excited to wear these on long bike rides this summer! I never felt like I had to squint, even at high noon, and of course, I looked cute!”  Having a pair of multi-function sunglasses makes for easy packing when taking a weekend trip or long vacation. One pair and you’re good to go!

Don’t Be Shady! How to Choose the Right Sunglasses For Eye Health

Sunglasses aren’t just for complementing your bikini while you lounge on the beach. They’re a must for protecting your eyes from UV damage. Sunglasses also shield the eyelids and the skin around your eyes, helping to prevent wrinkles and skin cancer. But before you run out and drop a small fortune on a pair, here are some things to consider.

  • UV protection is most important: UV rays can damage the eyes causing cataracts, benign growths on the eye’s surface, and snow blindness, a temporary and painful sunburn of the eye. As mentioned above, it can also lead to skin cancer around the eye, so make sure your pair guarantees 100 percent UV protection.
  • Polarized lenses have nothing to do with UV protection: Polarized lenses act as a filter to absorb light waves, which helps to reduce glare that bounces off smooth surfaces like pavement or water. While they’re great for offering clearer vision in extreme sun, being labeled “polarized” has nothing to do with how well they protect the eyes.

Can You Handle The Zip?

Written on March 25, 2011 at 11:55 am , by

Everybody has an obsession with something, whether we like to admit it or not. Some people are obsessed with going to the gym, others with bad reality TV shows, and then there is me…I am obsessed with sunglasses. Marc Jacobs, Ray-Ban, Burberry, you name it, I’ve got it. So when the Von Zipper team called me up and asked if I wanted to meet with them to see the new Summer 2011 collection, I thought to myself “How can I turn this down?!” Little did I know what I was getting myself into. Enter new eyewear obsession here.

GT, one of the company’s owners, came into our office full of energy, with the laid back attitude of a California surfer dude, which is exactly what Von Zipper’s look is. All of the new shades that he showed us were wearable, fun, and totally awesome for summer. (Think sporty chic meets beach babe.) I don’t think there was a single pair of frames that I wasn’t swooning over. And what is even better is that the price points are just right. My new favorite collection, Smoke Out, which is a limited edition collection — get them while they are hot! — has styles ranging from $80-$100. Seriously, you can’t beat that!

Here are some of my favorite styles that Von Zipper is launching for the summer. They are perfect for the beach, running errands or out in the backyard grilling burgers with friends! Enjoy!
