One of the perks of working at FITNESS is getting the opportunity to workout with celebrity trainers. So when we heard Jackie Warner had partnered with Wisk and wanted to personally hand us a sweat-dripping, butt-kicking workout, we just couldn’t say no. After 30 minutes of nonstop circuits that left our thighs burning and core shaking, we took a breather to get the inside scoop from the star.
First of all, what a great workout! And we didn’t use any weights. If you only had 10 minutes and no equipment, what would be your quick routine?
I love to do a yard workout, something outside. I would tell you to sprint 50 paces, jump down and do sprawls. Here’s how you do it:
- Start in a standing position. Lower your hands to the ground and quickly jump back into push-up position.
- Shift your hips to the ground, then return to pushup position.
- Jump back to standing position.
So that’s a sprawl; it’s the name of my training technique. Do 15 of those in a row, then sprint 50 paces and repeat. Complete four sets – you could likely do that in about five minutes, and it’s really intense. So if you want to go for 10 minutes, do eight sets.
Why would you say that’s such an intense workout?
The sprinting is getting your legs in place and the sprawls are getting your upper body and core in place. Your whole body is being worked in a short amount of time.
For those who are just starting to workout, what tips do you have to help ease themselves into the gym?
You shouldn’t ease yourself into the gym if it isn’t something you like. Don’t force a type of training on yourself that you do not like because you will fail long-term. Go to Google and find something you’ve always secretly wanted to do. There’s a wealth of information and classes out there, as well as trainers, that will find that one thing you like to do, whether it be mat Pilates, bootcamp, Spinning, or Muay Thai. There’s so much out there. So find the thing you secretly want to do and do that.
What advice do you have for those who struggle with morning workouts?
I prefer morning workouts, but we all have an internal strength clock. It’s a biological thing; we’re all built with it and it’s a unique clock that allows us to be stronger through time periods throughout the day. Some of us are stronger first thing in the morning, some mid-morning and others in the afternoon or evening. You need to experiment with it to find out what’s best for you and try to workout within that time. For me, my strength clock is between 9am and noon.
So don’t feel bad if you’re not working out first thing in the morning?
No, absolutely not. The good thing about working out in the morning is that you’re burning all throughout the day, which is fantastic. And you release a lot of hormones in the brain, which can give you more of a balance throughout the day. But if it’s not for you, then it’s not for you.

One of the most anticipated television shows of the year, Dancing With The Stars, will be hitting the dance floor again next week for yet another exciting competition but with a new twist—an all-star cast. That’s right! This season will welcome 13 fan favorites and previous winners back to the stage to take the quick footwork and drool-worthy ensembles we love to the next level.
Among the cast is reigning champion, Peta Murgatroyd, who took home the Mirror Ball trophy as Donald Driver’s professional partner. We talked strategy with the Aussie-native, who hopes to continue her winning streak with Season eight’s runner-up, Gilles Marini. Here’s what she had to say about injury prevention, her secrets to looking fab and her favorite indulgence, cheese!
After being the first duo to be sent home Season 13 with Metta World Peace, how did you change your tactics for the win with Donald Driver?
I think that it’s always easier when you have somebody that is willing to learn and willing to put in the effort and the hours. I was devastated when I got out first because it was my first season. I wanted to come out and make a big bang as the new pro on the block but that didn’t really quite happen and I was crushed. I really think that Donald was so inspiring to have as a partner and he really wanted to win it. It’s just all about how you guys work together and the communication.
What have you been doing in preparation for another victory, this time with Gilles Marini?
One of the biggest things is respect for one another and I think [Gilles] has that. He’s an amazing person. He can definitely move well. I looked back on some of his old YouTube videos and he was really good. One of his major pros is that he can act so he’s great with getting into character and really sort of honing in on what the dance is about.
Gilles suffered from a separated shoulder during his season. How do you prevent injury?
Warm-up is key and cool-down is key. I can’t even start dancing until stretching first. I think that’s from the ballet background that I’ve had for 12 years. We didn’t take a step without making sure our feet were flexed and pointed and, you know, every muscle was warm. Also, because I’m so flexible with my body, I need to keep it strong and make sure that I do a lot of Pilates, for instance. I do a lot of that and strength training with weights. Read more
We know from Rihanna’s music that she’s “Hard,” but even she needed a little help to look authentic as a fighter in the film Battleship (out on DVD today). Director Peter Berg put out as “SOS” (OK, enough with the song title references!) to US Navy officer Jacqueline Carrizosa to show Rihanna the military ropes. After spotting Carrizosa on the soccer field before her deployment, Berg called her superiors and arranged for Carrizosa to return to the states to help out on the Battleship set. She is more than a weapons expert, though: Carrizosa is an avid runner, diver, swimmer and skateboarder.
So what was it like to work with the R&B star on her film debut? Carrizosa spills:
- She can sing, dance and act, but Rihanna can’t do everything. “Rihanna sucks at playing soccer!” Carrizosa says. In a scene where her character is supposed to play, Carrizosa almost stood in for Rihanna, but Berg decided it would take too much editing to make the women look similar. Rihanna’s outfit in that scene did resemble Carrizosa’s look when Berg first spotted her on the field, though.
- The pair stayed active off set too. “We went hiking with Taylor Kitsch and Brooklyn Decker, and I got them all to jump off a cliff into the water below,” Carrizosa says.
- Things did get serious during filming. “I stood on set from sunrise to sunset to make sure that everything was safe and looked authentic,” she says. Gun safety was of utmost importance, so they trained for about four weeks. By the end, Carrizosa remembers, “Rihanna was saying, ‘I can see why you love this stuff!’ It was pretty rad.”
- The end result earned Carrizosa’s stamp of approval. When she went to see the finished movie with a group, “My friends laughed so hard and said, ‘Dude, that’s you!’ when they showed Rihanna,” Carrizosa says. “My favorite part, though, was when the veterans came out. That gave me chills and it made me remember how neat it was to meet those Pearl Harbor veterans in person during filming.”
