Whether it’s with a bud or a personal trainer, we recommend pairing up to slim down! Photo by iStockphoto.

ICYMI: Our week 2 #GetFitParty Instagram challenge was to show us your pics of working out with a buddy. Studies have shown that working out with a partner improves weight-loss results, which could be because you push yourself harder, have more fun, and have the all-important accountability factor influencing you.

But if scheduling a workout sesh with a bud or even just getting to the gym creates a problem, we’ve got a stellar recommendation for you: Skypercise. Whether you’re partnering up with a pal to workout over the world wide web or enlisting a professional trainer to help you out virtually, it’s an excellent way to ditch the excuses so that you can stick to your resolutions.

Which is why we’re thrilled to offer a lucky reader a fabulous Skype prize package, courtesy of Skype!

One lucky FITNESS reader will score a $100 Skype gift card and two one-on-one sessions with Marc D. Thompson, a fitness trainer, personal coach, owner of Virtufit.net, and Skypercise pro. All you have to do is enter here by January 31, 2014. [Official Rules]

Good luck! Now get to work, #GetFitParty crowd!

Fit or Flop: Behind-the-Scenes of Finding the Next Fitness Star!

Written on January 30, 2013 at 6:07 pm , by

Tune in every Wednesday to see who impressed these tough judges!

It’s OK, you can admit it: you’re addicted to reality TV. This is a judgment-free zone, and by now you all know about our slight obsession with The Biggest Loser and The Bachelor. So what’s a girl to do when she just wants to see her passion for guilty-pleasure TV and fitness combined? Enter season 2 of Fit or Flop, an online reality series looking for the next big fitness star.

Sound right up your alley? We got the inside scoop from all three of the judges: Brett Hoebel, formerly from The Biggest Loser, Allison Ceraso, and Jenna Autuori-Dedic, our very own fitness editor! Keep reading to find out what they’re looking for in a winner, then check out their website for a new episode every Wednesday night!

What made you want to get involved with Fit or Flop?

Jenna Autuori-Dedic, fitness editor at FITNESS (JA): We have dancing, singing and talent competitions on TV, and since the fitness industry is so popular right now and saturated with many trainers and methods, it makes sense that we put them all together and find the next star! I meet so many trainers who are all so amazing and passionate, but they need the right direction on how to expand their brand and business. Winning Fit or Flop gives you that chance. Plus, it was like an open casting call for me to find new workouts and methods that I could share with our readers!

Brett Hoebel, founder of Hoebel Fitness (BH): I really think the fitness industry needs something like this. When I was getting started, there wasn’t a lot of access to getting started as a brand, and it was a struggle. If I knew that something like this was available back then, I would have absolutely been going at it.

Allison Ceraso, creative director at Havas Life (AC): The concept is so appealing to me. I truly believe that health and wellness are the biggest trends of our time. That, coupled with the takeover of social and digital media, seemed like the perfect pairing. Health is contagious, so it seemed fit to make the branding of the next fitness star go viral!

Are there any traits that really sway you to make a person a Fit instead of a Flop?

BH: Star power. To me, that’s just “Do you remember the person after they’ve left the room?” It doesn’t mean they have to leave a good impression on you – some people love to hate – but they have to have left a lasting one. I call it stickiness, and that’s the kind of personality and program you have to have.

JA: Just like all TV shows or big stars, personality and star power sets you apart from everyone else. I gave a Fit if I really saw that a trainer’s method would speak to the masses or if they had a great personality and positive energy that would attract a lot of followers. If I felt like I would want to take a class with this person on my own time, they got a definite Fit from me!

AC: For me, it was about the ability to inspire. Yes, they had to come in with a solid, unique program that engaged everyone. But they also had to have the ability to connect emotionally with their customers, and most importantly, create an enduring relationship through their brand so it wouldn’t be short-lived. They had to be ready to not just create a brand, but be the brand.

London 2012 Olympics: Meet The Trainer of Our Summer Games Workout!

Can’t be at the games this year (okay, perhaps some of us won’t ever get there!), but go for the gold in your own backyard with our hardcore Summer Games circuit workout featured in our July/August 2012 issue! I met trainer, Angela Parker, founder of Body Inspired Fitness in Los Angeles, while we were in Miami for Puma’s BodyTrain girl’s getaway weekend. During Angela’s workout, her upbeat personality and can-do attitude was enough to make me do my best to impress, and her bootcamp training style meant I was being told to work harder every single step of the way. I knew this lady would be loved by you guys, even if you can’t experience her one-on-one like I did. Her backyard bootcamp, created exclusively for FITNESS readers, has you competing against yourself (or the clock) to eke out more reps. Meet the trainer behind this kick-butt routine:

What was the most surprising thing you learned about your training style from watching yourself on Chelsea Settles?

What was surprising is that it captured the emotion and the connection that comes from working so closely with someone over such a long period of time. How you saw me on TV is exactly how I am in real life. I am passionate, I am focused, and I don’t let anything get in the way of others’ success. I am learning how to not want it more than my clients want it.

What’s your favorite workout outfit? Head to toe:
I’m an ambassador for Puma so I’m a big fan of their workout gear. Of course I love my new Puma BodyTrain Slim Capris, especially the gray ones with blue and green stripes. I like how they give me an extra super flat tummy. I love pairing it with an oversized puma tank like this one. I love the cheap sports bras from Target. I always wear colored socks, which is a great way to add flash to a boring workout ensemble. Anytime I workout outside I am always wearing a visor. There is nothing sexy about wrinkles or skin cancer. And my favorite funky workout accessories are crazy nail polish and colored leather bands around my workout watch.

Favorite pre- and post-workout snacks?

My favorite pre-workout snack is Paleta’s 100 calorie bar. A great post workout snack I enjoy is my banana coconut smoothie. 1 cup coconut milk, 1 banana, 3/4 cups frozen pineapple, 1 tbsp almond butter. It’s cold, it’s refreshing, it’s hydrating and it’s the perfect snack to replenish and refuel me!

What’s the one or two best nutrition tips you tell your clients?

Don’t deprive yourself. Load up on veggies. Drink lots of water. Read more
