Jillian Michaels Dishes on Her New IMPACT Clothing Line, How to Stay Motivated and What’s on Her Playlist
Written on August 22, 2014 at 4:52 pm , by Katie Maguire
Jillian Michaels is officially our idol. She won us over when we first met her as the tough-but-lovable trainer way back when on The Biggest Loser, continued to impress us with her ever-growing health and fitness empire, and now she’s completely blowing us away with her latest endeavor: a new activewear line IMPACT, available at Kmart. Not only is it cute and practical, but it’s completely affordable—the highest price comes in at $37 for a yoga tote! If these clothes help us work out even half as much as Jillian does (seriously, do you see those arms?), sign us up!
Why don’t you tell us about your line and why you decided to work specifically with Kmart?
Honestly, a cool, athletic apparel line is something that we’ve been trying to do at my company for about 8 years now. It’s been so hard to find a partner that is going to give my customer accessibility and affordability, and also really care about more than just a profit. I wanted a partner to care about whether these clothes are really performing, are they cool-looking, do they make the customer feel confident and empowered? The Kmart people were like, “We really want you to do your thing and get involved.” So it’s a really good home for my brand.
What were the most important aspects to you when developing the apparel itself?
It really did have to have these three things equally: it needed to perform, it needed to look cute and it needed to be affordable. I’ve just grown very sensitive to the reality of women in poverty and there are so many women who are honestly one paycheck away from bankruptcy. So, I mean, to turn around and ask people to spend $100 on a pair of capris that you know is costing that retailer $5 to make, is disgusting. These women need to be healthy too, and they might only be able to afford one or two things so I need those things to last. They can’t wear those capris like twice and then wash them and then they’re see-through, they’re falling apart, they’ve lost their elasticity. So, I just really need my customer to be able to afford at least one or two pieces that will last. I’m just super sensitive to that right now.
What is your typical workout routine right now?
Personally, I like to mix it up. So we created a program called Body Shred, which is quite honestly my best offering. It’s a holistic workout because it hits every muscle in the body and it changes consistently. There are over 300 different exercises in the program’s repertoire so the trainer has the ability to create the program, so it has a format and a science and therefore the customer never adapts and plateaus. It hits on every fitness modality and, to me, that’s really important. So I train very much in that way. You know, I don’t just do yoga, I don’t just do endurance training or I won’t just do boot camp. I train with every modality; I hit my muscles at as many angles of push and pull as possible. I change my workout constantly because I think that’s best way to get in shape and the most functional in your life to prevent injury and to stay healthy. It’s critical that you constantly shift things. So if you are a person who loves yoga, try a CrossFit class. If you are a CrossFitter, I think you need to get out and do a yoga class. Just be sure to mix it up.
How do you motivate yourself on those days when you’re just not feeling like working out?
I really tell people that they need to establish a why in life. So for example ‘I want to be healthy…’ What does that mean to you? What does it look like in your life? You know, does it mean you’re running triathlons to bond with your 20-year-old son when you’re 50? Or does it mean that you’re 20 years old and you want to wear a two-piece instead of a one-piece at Spring Break? What does it mean to you? So you have to really establish and identify what health looks like as it manifests in your life and when you have that why to live for, it makes the how way more tolerable. You know, I don’t love chicken and broccoli, I don’t love working out at the gym – I really don’t love it – but then I think about when I am able to pick up my son and spin him around, or wear my skinny jeans, or wear that two-piece instead of that one-piece, all those things do matter to me and it pushes me. You know, in life, work with purpose is passion; work without purpose is punishment. So really establish a detailed and defined why and that’s going to be your lasting source of motivation to tolerate those things that quite honestly aren’t always pleasurable in the moment.
Current favorite workout song or playlist?
When it comes to music for working out, I like to listen to a lot of EDM, so Alesso, Avicii, Tiesto – they’re my favorite for pumping up and pushing myself. But, at the moment, just in general, I love Sia’s new album. I’m obsessed with her song ‘Fire Meet Gasoline,’ it’s like on repeat. She has a killer new album.
If you could give one piece of health/fitness advice to our readers a whole what would it be?
Live the life you want, not the life you think you should. I think when you follow that advice it all works out. It won’t be easy, but it’ll be worth it.

There’s no stopping Jillian Michaels in 2014. She’s prepping for the second leg of her Maximize Your Life motivational tour, working on a new project that could get her into the food market and launched her new partnership with Curves, the international fitness franchise focused on women. Last week I had the pleasure (yes, pleasure) of getting my booty kicked when previewing the new workout program with Michaels herself, and I ended up learning a little more about one of our most beloved trainers in the process.
Michaels’ partnership with Curves is the first time she’s been available in a brick-and-mortar gym. We know—crazy, right? From those at-home workout DVDs to episodes of The Biggest Loser, Michaels is coming to you in the gym. Now any woman training in one of the 3,000 Curves locations nationwide can see her on screen daily when sweating through her high-intensity circuit training workout. “It gives me access to thousands and thousands of women where I can literally affect a change in an environment I have yet to be in, which is really exciting,” says Michaels. “It’s everywhere, it’s affordable, there’s a coach there, it’s 30 minutes. It’s got all those factors, which is not an easy thing to do.”
The “trainer save” on the current season of The Biggest Loser was her idea. Quite a few changes have graced the famous weight loss reality show this season, from shortening episode airtime to one hour to removing the “yellow line” from the elimination process. But the “trainer save,” which allows each trainer to save one contestant from elimination, came from Michaels herself, and she shakes her head at how it turned out. “None of us got to use that thing the right way,” she says. “We all used it the first time; none of us had the ability to hold out and say no.” But she is hopeful about its potentially strategic role next season!
She tells her daughter kale helps Katy Perry “roar” so she’ll eat her veggies. The trainer admits that it’s probably not the best parenting method, but when her 3-year-old daughter isn’t cooperating with Michaels’ healthy eating requests, she turns to pop stars’ supposed habits for reinforcement. Since Lukensia loves Katy Perry and insists on listening to “Roar” constantly, she tells her, “She roars better with kale!” Seems like a pretty harmless—and successful—way to get a little girl to eat her greens, if you ask us.
Her weekly podcast is a must-listen for healthy living tips—and hilarious entertainment. If you want to add an extra dose of Michaels to your week without getting your booty kicked, pop in those ear buds and listen to The Jillian Michaels Show podcast. From “snappy fitness segments” to chats with callers as the self-proclaimed “Love Doctor” to tales of her latest parenting adventures, you’ll get to know Michaels on an entirely new level and appreciate her down-to-earth personality. Trust us, you’ll be laughing out loud at her and co-host Janice’s weekly antics.
She thinks every woman should have permission to be selfish. When we asked for a bit of motivational advice for FITNESS readers, she didn’t so much as hesitate to tell us to simply be awesome. “No one ever gives women the permission to just be awesome,” she says. “Be selfish, focus on you, don’t dumb yourself down for anybody else’s benefit, and go after your goals and your dreams. With no shame and no guilt, go out there and conquer the world.” If that doesn’t ignite a spark in you, we don’t know what will.

Jillian Michaels is at it again. The health and fitness expert, who’s known for her tough coaching on NBC’s The Biggest Loser, her toned body in her workout DVDs and inspiring outlook on life in her books, is taking on a new challenge. Tomorrow, Michaels’ first DietBet game launches, motivating participants all over the world to lose weight with the support of social media.
The Jillian Michaels DietBet will host a motivating community for anyone looking to improve their health. Each participant begins by placing $30 in the pot and submits a photo of themselves on their scales to DietBet’s referees (don’t worry, the pic is totally confidential). On Tuesday, September 24, the four-week countdown begins for each participant to lose 4 percent of their body weight. Everyone who completes the goal splits the pot evenly, pocketing some hard-earned cash. With 5,472+ players currently signed up, and the pot up to $164160, the game ought to be a fun one.
Using social media as a weight loss tool helps users compete with one another, and support and encourage one another’s goals simultaneously. Plus, each participant will receive nutrition advice, workout information and motivational tips from Michaels herself throughout the four weeks to help them succeed. “It’s the first of its kind, so not only is it one of a kind, it’s revolutionary,” says Michaels. “The concept makes weight loss fun, motivating and challenging! What could be cooler?” The financial incentive doesn’t hurt either.
Like with many of her other fitness projects, Michaels approaches this new challenge with loads of enthusiasm and little fear. “I just love being a part of something new. I don’t really have concerns,” says Michaels.” People bet $30 on themselves to succeed. If they lose 4 percent in 4 weeks, they get it all back and way more. The worst-case scenario is you spend 30 bucks to have me coach you to lose weight for a month. The best case is you lose the weight and make money doing it.”
Today is the last day to sign up for the Jillian Michaels’ DietBet. What are you waiting for?

Red hot alert! Last night, we cozied up along the catwalk with fashion’s finest in support of The Heart Truth, a national campaign raising awareness for women’s heart disease led by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). This year’s Red Dress Collection show kicked off Fashion Week with more than 15 of our favorite athletes and celebs—Gabrielle Douglas, Jillian Michaels and Minka Kelly, to name a few—sporting scarlet designer gowns. Their individual runway motivation may have varied, as projected on the big screen while they strutted their stuff, but they all shared the collective goal of putting an end to the number one killer of American women. Eat your heart out, heart disease!
Before stepping out in a flowy Oscar de la Renta number, we caught up with Minka and asked her all about her involvement as Diet Coke’s Celebrity Ambassador. Here’s how the starlet keeps her “Sexist Woman Alive” body fit, heart strong and more!
This is your second year as an ambassador for The Heart Truth! What inspired your continued partnership with Diet Coke?
Last year when I learned that heart disease was the number one killer of women in America, I was really inspired to get involved and use whatever voice I could to help inspire women to take care of their hearts because you’re never too young or too old. This year it’s a little different. You can upload a photo of yourself to Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag “#showyourheart” and every post Diet Coke will donate a dollar, up to $100,000, so that’s my goal this year.
What have you done personally to lower your heart disease risk?
Living a healthy lifestyle and exercising and eating healthy has been a big part of my life for some time now, which is why working with this campaign made so much sense for me and I’m really passionate about it. So it’s just a fit that makes sense.
Any heart-healthy fitness and diet tips?
I try and get my blood pumping once a day. I work with a trainer three times a week and on the off days, I do yoga or I hike. I just try to be active every day and I try and eat as healthy as possible. I try and be aware of “food-combining,” which I think is very important, but I certainly don’t deprive myself. Everything in moderation is key. I think portion control is also very important. Read more

Next weekend I’ll be in workout bliss at Sweat AC, a three-day festival on September 21 to 23 focusing on what’s hot in fitness, nutrition and health at Caesar’s Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City. What I love even more about this event, besides the celebrity trainers, wellness coaches and all-day workouts is that I’ll be able to mingle with men, women and teens who are passionate about getting in shape and being healthy. Some of my best ideas happen when I’m, what I like to call, “out on the field” interacting with readers and seeing what people are raving about. If you want in on what’s going to be an awesome event, check out www.sweatac.com to register. Workouts include Jillian Michaels’ newest bootcamp class, BodyShred, which debuts this month at Crunch clubs nationwide, a Zumba dance party, a Brazilian Butt Lift session with the pro Leandro Carvalho, Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga with Sadie Nardini, a Warrior Workout with P90X star Tony Horton and a spinning class on the boardwalk with Full Throttle Cycling, among SO much more!
For some this may be your fitness trip of a lifetime, or the perfect way to kickstart that new healthy lifestyle you’ve always talked about, and this may even be your chance to test the waters and try the workouts you see on TV and read about in magazines. Class prices and healthy-living workshops range from $40 to $100, but it’s sure to do a body (and mind) good so I hope to see you there!
I got to chat with uber-popular, and forever-our-favorite The Biggest Loser trainer Jillian Michaels who will be at Sweat AC before she’s off to whip a handful of new contestants into shape for season 14!
What was it about this type of event that made you want to get involved?
The concept is fresh, the people involved are the top of their game, and the location is a blast!
The world got the official news last week—you’re “officially” back on next seasons The Biggest Loser premiering in January. Just for the record, I’m beyond thrilled. The show was not the same without you! What sparked your decision to return to BL?
We’ve been talking on and off since I left, but I was very focused on taking a year off to be with my family. Then the producers came to me and said look it’s been a year, we are planning taking on the issue of childhood obesity and we’d love to have you on board. Now being a mother of two and having been an overweight teen myself it’s an issue that is especially close to my heart. I’ve been working to fight childhood obesity in my work with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, NFL play 60, and the Clinton Global Initiative, but doing it with a platform like The Biggest Loser was extremely tempting.
Will you incorporate a lot of what you learned about being a new mom and ‘juggling it all’ into how you train and interact with your new contestants? (Congratulations on your beautiful kids by the way!)
I absolutely will. I’ll teach parents how to lead by example and fit it all in and with the kids I’ll be an empowering friend and coach. Read more

It seems since stepping down from The Biggest Loser in 2011 life has gotten even busier for star trainer Jillian Michaels if possible. Aside from numerous TV appearances, her latest DVD Body Revolution and many other projects, she’s also been expanding her family as well! In just one month, Michaels and her partner Hilary Rhoades adopted their daughter Lukensia, from Haiti and gave birth to their son, Phoenix. We got the chance to catch up with the new mom on behalf of popchips to see how she’s teaching her kids healthy eating practices and how she fits in a good workout these days!
Congrats on the new additions to your family! What are some healthy eating tips you’re trying to incorporate into your kids’ lives?
Since the kids are so young (Lukensia is 2 and Phoenix is 3 months old) it is incredibly important that we develop healthy eating habits for them now. Whenever possible, I prefer to make their food myself, so I know exactly what they are eating. As a rule of thumb, I like to suggest to parents to use fruits and vegetables with bright colors, they are the ones with the most nutrients. Having meals at a set time helps establish a routine, making sure both kids are hydrated without resorting to sugary drinks. I also try to feed them organic foods as often as possible. Pesticides and other chemicals are pure poison to their little bodies and need to be avoided. Read more

Ever wish you had a personal chef to deliver diet-friendly meals right to your home? Us too! That’s why we had to catch up with Jillian Michaels at her recent event at the W Residences in Hollywood to get the skinny on her new partnership with Freshology, a food delivery program that brings gourmet, calorie-controlled meals straight to your door.
“I’ve been wanting to get involved with something like this for a long time, but either the food sucked or it was packed with unhealthy preservatives,” says Michaels. “It’s not just calories, the quality of the food matters when it comes to health and weight loss—which is why I really clicked with the Freshology’s commitment to fresh, clean food.”
Teaming up with Freshology’s five-star chef, Michaels used her nutrition principles to create a total weight loss plan that delivers healthy, wholesome and delicious food with no preservatives, no hormones, no artificial sweeteners and no trans fats. On the program, you’ll receive a twice weekly delivery stocked with daily meals totaling 1,400 to 1,800 calories: breakfast (240-475 calories), lunch (230-470 calories), dinner (303-536 calories) and a dessert. The 28-day rotation ensures you’ll never experience taste bud boredom. And all the food is pre-cooked, chilled and ready to go, so at the very most all you have to do is zap it in the microwave. For added thinspiration, you’ll also get Michaels’s fitness DVDs, texts to keep you motivated and a copy of her book, Master Your Metabolism.
We got to sample the menu and must say we were impressed! From blueberry pancakes and a chicken salad sandwich to steak and chocolate cheesecake, we licked our plates—definitely not like diet food. It’s no wonder the fancy food delivery program is a celeb favorite and has become the diet of choice for the contestants on Dancing with the Stars. “It eliminates all the guesswork—no more journaling or calorie counting—so all you have to do is stick to the meals and the pounds will come off,” says Michaels.
The Jillian Michaels Freshology Gold program starts at $48 a day, and can be modified for vegetarians and picky eaters. It’s not cheap, but worth the investment according to Michaels: “It sounds expensive but in the grand scheme of things it’s a bargain—you want to know what’s expensive? Obesity!”

Don’t you ever wish you could take a peek in the pantry or gym of the fitness and diet pros you see on TV to see if they really practice what they preach? We do too! That’s why we asked Jillian Michaels, celebrity personal trainer, author, motivational expert and soon-to-be mom(!), to share her top snack picks that keep her energy high on even the busiest of days.
“These snacks are quick, easy and they all taste good. Plus they’re preservative-free, contain no trans fats, MSG, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners,” Michaels says.
- Hummus and veggie sticks.“This is an incredibly healthy snack that’s filling and tasty,” she says. The protein from the chickpeas in the hummus and the fiber from the veggies will keep you satisfied.
- One hard-boiled egg and one piece of fruit. This combo offers an ideal proportion of healthy fat, protein and carbohydrates.
- Barbecue or sweet potato popchips. “A serving of popchips is packed with flavor and a great savory, salty crunch,” Michaels raves, and the 100-calorie bags are handy for on-the-go eating.
- Ciao Bella sorbet. Perfect “for when your sweet tooth kicks in,” she says, and it’s all-natural.
- 22 Days Protein Bars. “These bars taste amazing! Mocha Mantra is my favorite flavor,” Michaels explains. She loves that they use hemp protein, “which is great for you.”
