Minka Kelly Shows Her Heart In Red

Red hot alert! Last night, we cozied up along the catwalk with fashion’s finest in support of The Heart Truth, a national campaign raising awareness for women’s heart disease led by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). This year’s Red Dress Collection show kicked off Fashion Week with more than 15 of our favorite athletes and celebs—Gabrielle Douglas, Jillian Michaels and Minka Kelly, to name a few—sporting scarlet designer gowns. Their individual runway motivation may have varied, as projected on the big screen while they strutted their stuff, but they all shared the collective goal of putting an end to the number one killer of American women. Eat your heart out, heart disease!

Before stepping out in a flowy Oscar de la Renta number, we caught up with Minka and asked her all about her involvement as Diet Coke’s Celebrity Ambassador. Here’s how the starlet keeps her “Sexist Woman Alive” body fit, heart strong and more!

This is your second year as an ambassador for The Heart Truth! What inspired your continued partnership with Diet Coke?

Last year when I learned that heart disease was the number one killer of women in America, I was really inspired to get involved and use whatever voice I could to help inspire women to take care of their hearts because you’re never too young or too old. This year it’s a little different. You can upload a photo of yourself to Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag “#showyourheart” and every post Diet Coke will donate a dollar, up to $100,000, so that’s my goal this year.

What have you done personally to lower your heart disease risk?

Living a healthy lifestyle and exercising and eating healthy has been a big part of my life for some time now, which is why working with this campaign made so much sense for me and I’m really passionate about it. So it’s just a fit that makes sense.

Any heart-healthy fitness and diet tips?

I try and get my blood pumping once a day. I work with a trainer three times a week and on the off days, I do yoga or I hike. I just try to be active every day and I try and eat as healthy as possible. I try and be aware of “food-combining,” which I think is very important, but I certainly don’t deprive myself. Everything in moderation is key. I think portion control is also very important. Read more

Meet Jillian Michaels and Other Fitness Pros at Sweat AC!

Written on September 10, 2012 at 2:53 pm , by

Next weekend I’ll be in workout bliss at Sweat AC, a three-day festival on September 21 to 23 focusing on what’s hot in fitness, nutrition and health at Caesar’s Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City. What I love even more about this event, besides the celebrity trainers, wellness coaches and all-day workouts is that I’ll be able to mingle with men, women and teens who are passionate about getting in shape and being healthy. Some of my best ideas happen when I’m, what I like to call, “out on the field” interacting with readers and seeing what people are raving about. If you want in on what’s going to be an awesome event, check out www.sweatac.com to register. Workouts include Jillian Michaels’ newest bootcamp class, BodyShred, which debuts this month at Crunch clubs nationwide, a Zumba dance party, a Brazilian Butt Lift session with the pro Leandro Carvalho, Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga with Sadie Nardini, a Warrior Workout with P90X star Tony Horton and a spinning class on the boardwalk with Full Throttle Cycling, among SO much more!

For some this may be your fitness trip of a lifetime, or the perfect way to kickstart that new healthy lifestyle you’ve always talked about, and this may even be your chance to test the waters and try the workouts you see on TV and read about in magazines. Class prices and healthy-living workshops range from $40 to $100, but it’s sure to do a body (and mind) good so I hope to see you there!

Who hasn't missed her? Jillian Michaels is back! (Photo courtesy of Sweat AC)

I got to chat with uber-popular, and forever-our-favorite The Biggest Loser trainer Jillian Michaels who will be at Sweat AC before she’s off to whip a handful of new contestants into shape for season 14!

What was it about this type of event that made you want to get involved?
The concept is fresh, the people involved are the top of their game, and the location is a blast!

The world got the official news last week—you’re “officially” back on next seasons The Biggest Loser premiering in January. Just for the record, I’m beyond thrilled. The show was not the same without you! What sparked your decision to return to BL?
We’ve been talking on and off since I left, but I was very focused on taking a year off to be with my family.  Then the producers came to me and said look it’s been a year, we are planning taking on the issue of childhood obesity and we’d love to have you on board.   Now being a mother of two and having been an overweight teen myself it’s an issue that is especially close to my heart.  I’ve been working to fight childhood obesity in my work with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, NFL play  60, and the Clinton Global Initiative, but doing it with a platform like The Biggest Loser was extremely tempting.

Will you incorporate a lot of what you learned about being a new mom and ‘juggling it all’ into how you train and interact with your new contestants? (Congratulations on your beautiful kids by the way!)
I absolutely will. I’ll teach parents how to lead by example and fit it all in and with the kids I’ll be an empowering friend and coach. Read more

The Healthy Eating Tips Jillian Michaels Is Teaching Her Kids

It seems since stepping down from The Biggest Loser in 2011 life has gotten even busier for star trainer Jillian Michaels if possible. Aside from numerous TV appearances, her latest DVD Body Revolution and many other projects, she’s also been expanding her family as well! In just one month, Michaels and her partner Hilary Rhoades adopted their daughter Lukensia, from Haiti and gave birth to their son, Phoenix. We got the chance to catch up with the new mom on behalf of popchips to see how she’s teaching her kids healthy eating practices and how she fits in a good workout these days!

Congrats on the new additions to your family! What are some healthy eating tips you’re trying to incorporate into your kids’ lives?

Since the kids are so young (Lukensia is 2 and Phoenix is 3 months old) it is incredibly important that we develop healthy eating habits for them now. Whenever possible, I prefer to make their food myself, so I know exactly what they are eating. As a rule of thumb, I like to suggest to parents to use fruits and vegetables with bright colors, they are the ones with the most nutrients. Having meals at a set time helps establish a routine, making sure both kids are hydrated without resorting to sugary drinks. I also try to feed them organic foods as often as possible. Pesticides and other chemicals are pure poison to their little bodies and need to be avoided. Read more

Our (Yummy, Guilt-Free) Lunch With Jillian Michaels

Guest post written by Kelly Mickle

Nutritious meals with a tight schedule? Michaels says it is possible.

Ever wish you had a personal chef to deliver diet-friendly meals right to your home? Us too! That’s why we had to catch up with Jillian Michaels at her recent event at the W Residences in Hollywood to get the skinny on her new partnership with Freshology, a food delivery program that brings gourmet, calorie-controlled meals straight to your door.

“I’ve been wanting to get involved with something like this for a long time, but either the food sucked or it was packed with unhealthy preservatives,” says Michaels. “It’s not just calories, the quality of the food matters when it comes to health and weight loss—which is why I really clicked with the Freshology’s commitment to fresh, clean food.”

Teaming up with Freshology’s five-star chef, Michaels used her nutrition principles to create a total weight loss plan that delivers healthy, wholesome and delicious food with no preservatives, no hormones, no artificial sweeteners and no trans fats. On the program, you’ll receive a twice weekly delivery stocked with daily meals totaling 1,400 to 1,800 calories: breakfast (240-475 calories), lunch (230-470 calories), dinner (303-536 calories) and a dessert. The 28-day rotation ensures you’ll never experience taste bud boredom. And all the food is pre-cooked, chilled and ready to go, so at the very most all you have to do is zap it in the microwave. For added thinspiration, you’ll also get Michaels’s fitness DVDs, texts to keep you motivated and a copy of her book, Master Your Metabolism.

Yes, dessert is on the menu!

We got to sample the menu and must say we were impressed! From blueberry pancakes and a chicken salad sandwich to steak and chocolate cheesecake, we licked our plates—definitely not like diet food. It’s no wonder the fancy food delivery program is a celeb favorite and has become the diet of choice for the contestants on Dancing with the Stars. “It eliminates all the guesswork—no more journaling or calorie counting—so all you have to do is stick to the meals and the pounds will come off,” says Michaels.

The Jillian Michaels Freshology Gold program starts at $48 a day, and can be modified for vegetarians and picky eaters. It’s not cheap, but worth the investment according to Michaels: “It sounds expensive but in the grand scheme of things it’s a bargain—you want to know what’s expensive? Obesity!”

Touché.

Jillian Michaels’ Top 5 Snack Picks

Grab-and-go snacks are key for this busy TV trainer. (Photo courtesy of Andrew Southam)

Don’t you ever wish you could take a peek in the pantry or gym of the fitness and diet pros you see on TV to see if they really practice what they preach? We do too! That’s why we asked Jillian Michaels, celebrity personal trainer, author, motivational expert and soon-to-be mom(!), to share her top snack picks that keep her energy high on even the busiest of days.

“These snacks are quick, easy and they all taste good. Plus they’re preservative-free, contain no trans fats, MSG, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners,” Michaels says.

  1. Hummus and veggie sticks.“This is an incredibly healthy snack that’s filling and tasty,” she says. The protein from the chickpeas in the hummus and the fiber from the veggies will keep you satisfied.
  2. One hard-boiled egg and one piece of fruit. This combo offers an ideal proportion of healthy fat, protein and carbohydrates.
  3. Barbecue or sweet potato popchips. “A serving of popchips is packed with flavor and a great savory, salty crunch,” Michaels raves, and the 100-calorie bags are handy for on-the-go eating.
  4. Ciao Bella sorbet. Perfect “for when your sweet tooth kicks in,” she says, and it’s all-natural.
  5. 22 Days Protein Bars. “These bars taste amazing! Mocha Mantra is my favorite flavor,” Michaels explains. She loves that they use hemp protein, “which is great for you.”

Stomp Away Childhood Obesity in Jillian Michael’s K-Swiss “Fly” Tubes

Written on October 19, 2011 at 10:10 am , by

K-Swiss FLY TUBES Run 100 from Jillian Michaels (Photo courtesy of K-Swiss)

Whenever something totally amazing hits my desk, I get really excited to share the news. So when our favorite TV trainer (Bob, we love you too!), Jillian Michaels, designed her first pair of lightweight running and training shoes for K-Swiss, I said sign me up for a pair!

The FLY TUBES from the Jillian Michaels Collection by K-Swiss are an awesome shade of forest green and yellow (her favorite colors!), and feature an eagle graphic with the mantra “Fly” inscription on the heel. Shoes that speak? I’m kind of loving that.

Not only do they look cool, but the real message of these shoes is even cooler. When you purchase a pair, a portion of the proceeds will go directly to the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity by 2015 and empower kids to make healthy lifestyle choices. I think these TUBES speak for themselves.

As new research finds about 17 percent of U.S. children aged 2 to 19 are obese, and with obesity rates expected to increase to about 65 million Americans within the next fifteen years, whatever each one of us can do to help this growing epidemic will surely help immensely. Do good and feel good with a pair of Jillian’s newest kicks! And if you’re thinking ahead, they make great holiday presents if I don’t say so myself.

Get your pair today sold exclusively on amazon.com!

5 Things We Learned About Jillian Michaels

Written on April 6, 2011 at 3:17 pm , by

Karla and Jillian Michaels

To celebrate the Tuesday release of her new book, Unlimited: How to Build an Exceptional Life, fitness expert Jillian Michaels has been making the media rounds the past few days. When we saw that she would be in our area for a book signing, we jumped at the chance to meet the trainer who we’ve exercised with countless times (via her DVDs, of course), were inspired by (on The Biggest Loser and Losing It with Jillian) and all-around admired. We admit it, we were nervous fans when awaiting her arrival!

But all of that nervousness was put to rest when we met Jillian—who is so sweet, personable and approachable. And how she had that much energy after a day of back-to-back TV interviews is beyond us! You get to see Jillian the TV star each week, but what is she like in real life? Here are five things we learned during our visit with Jillian:

  1. She’s giving. We arrived with a media preview copy of her book, which she quickly tossed in the trash after digging up a shiny new hardcover copy (see right) and saying, “I knew I brought this for a reason!”

    Jenna and Jillian Michaels

  2. She’s tiny! Seeing Jillian on TV, you can’t tell how petite she is. And with that figure, she absolutely is practicing what she preaches.
  3. Girl can rock the business casual look. Her fans are used to seeing her in the super-cute K-Swiss exercise apparel or other gym gear, but she came to the signing wearing a tailored jacket, breezy blouse, slim leg jeans and killer nude heels.
  4. She’s funny. We discussed her new DVD Ripped in 30 and how we loved the challenge it provided! She was surprised when we told her that, although it was tough, we could handle all four levels. Jillian told us, “I was even getting out of breath talking through the warm-up!”
  5. She’s not just the drill sergeant you see on TV. She gave us hugs, laughed along with jokes and seemed relaxed. Although we love the hard-bargaining Jillian on The Biggest Loser, it was fun to see this side of her as well!

Now tell us: Which fitness celebrity would you love to meet someday?
