Fit Blogger We Love: Love Veggies and Yoga

Written on September 1, 2011 at 3:49 pm , by

Averie at LoveVeggiesandYoga.com

Written by Alexa Cortese, web Intern

Averie of Love, Veggies and Yoga has an enthusiastic attitude about fitness and health, and shares stories about everything from her job as a yoga teacher to her favorite active vacations. Her philosophy that good-for-you food doesn’t always have to taste, well, healthy, caught our eye and we were running to the kitchen after searching through all of Averie’s dishes. Read on to learn more about this sunny California mom!

My fave way to workout: A quick run outdoors and a short but sweet yoga practice indoors. I like to be done with everything in under 45 minutes, tops.

5 things I can’t live without: Sunshine, fresh produce, chocolate, my camera, and most of all, my daughter.

I’m happiest when I’m: On the beach on vacation!

My “I Did It” moment: I entered a fitness competition (bikini class), trained for it on a plant-based diet for 12 weeks, and took second place in my first ever show (and only so far)!

My fitness mantra: “If I am hating this in five minutes, I can quit.” Usually the endorphins kick in and I don’t need the “safety valve” but I always give myself an option out if I’m not super psyched up for a workout.

Bloggers Unite to Fundraise and Fight Cancer

If there was ever any doubt about the healthy living blogging community and the support system it creates, Janetha from Meals and Moves has erased it all. She’s spearheaded The Great Fundraising Act, or TGFA—an online auction that is donating all of the proceeds to Susan, a fellow blogger who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Susan and Janetha officially met last fall when they were roommates for the Foodbuzz Festival in November, but they had been following each other’s blogs since April 2009. The two became fast friends, and when Janetha heard about Susan’s cancer diagnosis and the fact that she had to pay for her medicine (to the tune of $5,000 a month) she knew she had to help. Soon after, TGFA was born.

Intending to hold a bake sale that would “hopefully raise a few thousand dollars,” Janetha sent out emails to anyone in the blog world that might have a connection to Susan, asking if they’d be willing to donate baked goods. After an overwhelming amount of support, the bloggers recommended Janetha contact companies for charitable contributions. More support rolled in and TGFA ended up with over 170 items to auction away!

TGFA began at 8 a.m. EST today and has raised over $20,000. “People are so generous, it makes me want to cry,” Janetha says. “I’ve read tweets that say things like, ‘I don’t have any grocery money this week, but I’m still donating.’ I’m just completely astonished by the love and support that’s coming from all directions.”

Awesome products like a one-year supply of Chobani Greek yogurt, a travel package to Universal Studios in Hollywood, and tons of healthy, baked goods are ready for the taking, with staggered closing times until 11 p.m. Make sure you check it out!

If you’d like to simply make a direct donation to Susan to help cover the cost of her medical bills, you can donate via PayPal here.

And if you think there might be something you want post-TGFA, Janetha will be setting up an “After the Act” page next week that will list more products for sale at a set price!

Now tell us: What’s on your fitness wish list that you’d love to see auctioned off?

Fit Blogger We Love: FANNEtastic Food

Written on June 30, 2011 at 8:34 am , by

Anne holding her medal after completing the DC National Half Marathon!

We admire this runner and foodie’s recent big life change: quitting her cubicle job to move to Europe and then back to the U.S. to become a registered dietitian. Her blog features photos of healthy food that’ll make you drool and gorgeous scenery that’ll make you want to pack your bags for your own adventure! Here’s more about this soon-to-be R.D.:

I’m happiest when I’m: Outside! Hiking, running, biking, swimming, walking…you name it! If it’s outdoors, I probably love it.

My fave fit snack: Greek yogurt with fruit, my Oatmeal Dark Chocolate Granola Bars or my 5-Minute No Bake Peanut Butter Granola Bars!

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: I have a very random mix of music on my computer, and sometimes old school Disney movie songs come on. I’ve definitely rocked out to “Hakuna Matata” before while running. I may or may not still know all the words.

Olympic sport I’d love to try: Probably something super random like synchronized swimming, just to see what it was like. I have a feeling it would be a lot harder than it looks…

My “I Did It” Moment: Finishing my first half-marathon! Not only had I trained hard, but it was also approximately 1,000 billion degrees that day so finishing was an even bigger accomplishment than I had anticipated! I’ve since gone on to run a second half-marathon (and knocked nearly 15 minutes off my time due to better training and race day conditions), but I’m not sure anything will top the relief and pride I felt crossing the finish line that first time.

Fit Blogger We Love: Oh She Glows

Angela of Oh She Glows enjoys a healthy homemade slice.

Healthy living blogger Angela of Oh She Glows recently moved out of a big city with her husband, and also dropped her full-time research job at the same time. Her new gig? Opening her own healthy bakery! Read on for Angela’s yummy indulgence and her motivating fitness mantra.

5 things I can’t live without: My food processor, Canon DSLR camera, Vita-Mix, Garmin Forerunner, chia seeds.

I’m happiest when I’m: Outdoors during the summertime, enjoying delicious food and drinks with friends and family.

My biggest indulgence: My vegan Chilled Double Chocolate Torte. It is divine!

My fitness mantra: “You are stronger than you think.” I’ve taped this message on my back during races and other runners always thank me for the motivation, especially during the last mile of a half-marathon!

My “I Did It” moment: After struggling with an eating disorder for over 10 years, I was finally able to recover and lead a happy life free from obsession, binge-eating, and calorie counting. My “I did it” moment was when I realized how full and happy my life is now compared to the past. I now have so many hobbies (like blogging, writing, photography, running, baking, etc.) that I enjoy in my life and obsessive thoughts about food and weight do not consume me anymore.

Fit Blogger We Love: Eating Bender

Eating Bender's Jenn celebrates crossing the finish line at her first half-marathon!

Eating Bender's Jenn celebrates crossing the finish line at her first half-marathon!

Jenn, the brains behind the food and fitness blog Eating Bender, knows how to have a good time! Just scroll back through a few recent posts and you’ll see her fiery trip to a Teppanyaki restaurant, a pizza party with her new husband and an appearance or two by an Eating Bender favorite, coffee cocoa. After recently celebrating her blog’s third birthday, Jenn told us about her favorite foodie treats and what keeps her motivated to stay fit:

On my fit life list: I would love to hike Machu Picchu in Peru, as well as complete a longer hike of the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. I had the opportunity to do a three-mile trek there a few years ago and look forward to going back for my first wedding anniversary this October!

My biggest indulgence: Wine, bread and cheese. Preferably in generous amounts together. Bonus: Enjoying all three while in Napa.

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy) by Big & Rich. I’m not sure much explanation is needed beyond that.

My “I Did It” moment: Running my first half-marathon in Phoenix this past January. Especially after my husband and I were in a tandem bicycle accident (yes, you read that right) while on our honeymoon. It left him with a broken wrist and me with a busted up knee that was not ideal for training. Getting across that finish line never felt so good! I would love to improve upon my time in another race—and hope to complete a full marathon someday.

My motivation comes from: The inevitable feeling of accomplishment that comes at the end of a workout. Knowing that I will feel awesome about myself and my body when I am finished makes me excited to lace up my tennis shoes. Combine that with being a part of an amazing community of inspirational bloggers, and you have a recipe for sweet success.

Fit Blogger We Love: Yum Yucky

Written on March 9, 2011 at 3:11 pm , by

The sassy style of Yum Yucky‘s musings keep us giggling and coming back for more food reviews (seriously, it’s taste test central!), family tales and fitness challenges. Josie, the mastermind behind the blog that “finds balance between fitness and your greedy side,” told us about her exercise goals and explained why she never feels guilty when enjoying a slice of cake.
We never tire of Josie's amusing photos!

We never tire of Josie's amusing photos!

On my fit life list: I’m envious of the chicks who can hold those extremely advanced yoga poses. I’m still in the basic stages of yoga, but I’ve already experienced big time improvements in my balance and flexibility. My plan is to continue practicing yoga consistently and work my way up to the most advanced poses.

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: This is one embarrassment that I wear like a badge of honor. It’s the song, “It’s Peanut Butter Jelly Time.” Check it out on YouTube. I put it on to dance with my kids to fit in some family cardio. Ohhh, the happy shame!

My fave fit snack: Call me the strange one, but broccoli is my favorite snack. I steam it early in the morning, and then chill it in the fridge for a mid-morning or afternoon snack. Yes, I eat it cold! I love the taste, but I’m also compelled to keep chewing broccoli because of its anti-cancer benefits.

My biggest indulgence: Mmmm. Cake! I can serve my food trap extra large cake slices with zero guilt. Why? Although I take my cake eating very seriously, I reserve it for special occasions only a few times per year, so why not indulge?

Olympic sport I’d love to try: Since competitive cake eating will never be an Olympic sport, I’ll settle for gymnastics. As a child, I always wanted to be a gymnast, but never had the opportunity to train. It’s amazing what the human body can do. I’m not ruling out that back handspring I’ve always wanted to do!

Fit Blogger We Love: Kath Eats Real Food

Written on March 3, 2011 at 11:06 am , by

We like that we can drool over this blogger’s food pictures and recipes without feeling guilty about it. Kath started blogging in 2006 when she set out to lose 30 pounds and continued to blog about her meals and recipes after, becoming a registered dietician along the way. Here are her get-fit tips and how she really feels about oatmeal:

My favorite way to work out: Walking and biking all around my town. I love to kill two birds with one stone and exercise while I run errands!

5 things I can’t live without: My salad spinner, Burt’s Bees lip balm, Trader Joe’s Sunflower Butter, the Internet, chia seeds

I’m happiest when I’m: Eating oatmeal in my pajamas. (She means it — she’s got an entire section of her site devoted to oatmeal!)

My biggest indulgence: My husband’s home-brewed beer!

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile” from Annie!
