My favorite way to work out: Asking me to choose a favorite workout is almost like asking me to pick my favorite dessert. If you read my blog at all, you know that would send my head into a tail spin. I adore kickboxing, spinning, workout DVDs of all kinds, and more. But when it comes down to it, my favorite way to workout would have to be both lifting weights and running. Both leave me so empowered! They are both personal because you only have yourself to compete against. Nothing compares to the feeling of reaching a new speed or distance on a run or pushing out an extra set of squats.

Five things I can’t live without: Prayer, my family, cupcakes, Glee and exercise.

My fave fit snack: Yogurt bowls! They are my current obsession because they taste so fabulous and fill me up. I start with a container of Chobani Greek yogurt (because clearly no other yogurt compares). My favorite flavors are pineapple, mango, and strawberry banana. Then, I add fresh fruit (usually berries or a banana), granola (Love Grown granola rocks my world) or unsweetened cereal and some almonds. The bowls clock in at around 300 to 400 calories and satisfy like no other. Try one. Then thank me. I promise you’ll be in love.

My biggest indulgence: Dessert in all shapes and sizes! I have a serious sweet tooth. I actually have some form of indulgence pretty much daily, but have learned to keep portions in check. It allows me to make progress in my Body After Baby journey because it keeps me from feeling deprived. Knowing I can have a little chocolate in my life makes it easier to eat all that green stuff. OK, you caught me. I do love my veggies, but they still don’t compare to ice cream!

Your fitness mantra: “Life is more than diet and workouts.” It’s actually the tagline to my blog. I truly believe that life is made to live. We won’t get to our death beds wishing we had flatter abs or weighed ten pounds less. We will wish we lived life well: Cherishing loved ones, laughing, taking chances and seizing every moment we are blessed with. I spent years battling depression and binge eating because I allowed my life to revolve around diet and workouts as a way to cope with my lack of self-worth. Once I opened my eyes to the beauty of life as a whole, beyond burning calories and counting fat grams, I became the fittest and best version of myself.

Fit Blogger We Love: Eat, Sweat, Smile

Danielle over at Eat, Sweat, Smile caught our attention on Twitter when she posted pictures of these delicious salmon cakes after trying them out one weekend. We love her fun posts on quickie workouts and good-for-you recipes. Here she talks about  working out to Miley Cyrus (hey, she’s on our playlists too!) and the great feeling you get after completing a tough workout.

I’m happiest when I’m: In the “afterglow” stage after a really sweaty, challenging workout. Even though it it isn’t exactly comfortable when you’re pushing your limits, it always feels great when you’re done. On the exact opposite of the spectrum, I love reading a really good magazine.

My fave fit snack: 0% Greek yogurt with almonds, raisins, honey, banana and cinnamon. I have it every day for a snack and I’m pretty sure I’m addicted.

My biggest indulgence: If you put good chocolate in front of me, it doesn’t stand a chance.

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: I have been known to work out to some of the songs on “Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus”—yep, that’s right. I listen to Miley Cyrus!

My fitness mantra: “Get it girl!” and “You can do anything for one minute.” It really helps me get through hard workouts.

My “I Did It” moment: Completing the San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz last summer—specifically the swimming portion. Even though I’d completed an Olympic distance triathlon before that, the prospect of jumping off of a boat in the middle of the San Francisco Bay and swimming over a mile to shore seemed daunting. Even though the bike and the run were challenging, I definitely had an “I DID IT!” moment when I touched down on shore, which made it much easier to get through the 30 some-odd miles that were left to go in the race. It made me realize that I was much stronger than I thought I was.

We’ve got to admit, The Fitnessista‘s appetizing food photos never fail to catch our attention when we scroll through our RSS feed. This week, we chatted with Gina, the personal trainer, group fitness instructor and girly-girl behind the blog, about dry shampoo (AKA post-gym lifesaver), workout mantras and yummy snacks she likes to call “Amazeballz.”

I’m happiest when I’m: Dancing! Any type of dance or dance fitness: jazz, hip hop, Zumba, Dance Trance and dance cardio are my favorites, but I’m just as happy shaking it in my living room. It’s one of those workout gems where you forget you’re actually “working out” and burn a crazy amount of calories. Winner winner!

My fave fit snack: Amazeballz! These are high protein snacks that taste just like dessert. Amazeballz contain many of my favorite ingredients and are perfect to stash in your purse for grab-and-go. You can find the recipe here.

5 things I can’t live without: 1) My husband (aka “The Pilot”) and maltipoo, Bella, 2) Sun Warrior vanilla protein powder, 3)  Lululemon Cool Racerback tanks, 4) almond butter (Nuttzo peanut-free rocks my world), 5) Buxom eyeliner.

My fitness mantra: “Change creates change.” You can’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results. Anything you can do to switch up your workout routine or eating habits will keep the body from kicking into cruise control. Change something and change will follow.

My gym bag must-have: Dry shampoo! As a fitness professional, I teach quite a few times each day and don’t always have time to shower in between- sad, but reality. Dry shampoo has saved my life! I’ll spray a little to my roots (Ojon is my fave brand) and comb through, and then blowdry the wet parts. It gets me through the day without feeling like a greaseball.

As big fans of health and fitness blogs, we were excited when Tina Haupert’s new book hit our desks. Who is Tina, you ask? She’s the brains behind Carrots ‘N’ Cake, a popular blog that she started in early 2008 to stay on track while shaping up for her wedding. Today, she chronicles her daily life and offers helpful hints for readers who want to live a healthy lifestyle without deprivation.

Her tips, recipes and entertaining stories are included in Carrots ‘N’ Cake: Healthy Living One Carrot and Cupcake at a Time, which will be released on Tuesday. We asked Tina to share a few of her favorite things…besides carrot cake, of course!

Favorite Workout(s): “Every week, I combine running, Body Pump and yoga for a well-balanced routine. I also enjoy walking and hiking with my husband and dog.”

Best Piece of Advice for Our Readers: “Pay attention to the nutrients in your food, not the calorie count.”

Choice Healthy Snack: “Anything with peanut butter! I love these Peanut Butter Bars as a treat, but my favorite snack has to be a Peanut Butter & Banana Smoothie.”

Peanut Butter & Banana Smoothie

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup Almond Breeze almond milk
  • 2 tbsp. peanut butter
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder

Combine all ingredients in a blender and mix. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

On my fit life list: Run a Sub 4 hour Marathon!!! I can’t believe I’m admitting that on the internet since I’m so scared of doing it, but I gotta dream big right?

My biggest indulgence: Self serve frozen yogurt with as many toppings as actual yogurt. Granola, chocolate chips, fruit, almonds, animal cookies… you name it, I’ll put it on my ice cream. I make it a point to get it once a week so I never feel deprived.

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: “F*** You” by Cee-Lo Green. But it’s mostly only embarrassing because I sing it out loud as I go along.

My fitness mantra: “You will tell them ‘Yes’.” It’s from an old Nike ad I found in high school. I have the whole poem memorized and sometimes repeat it to myself when I’m having a tough run. Basically it says that your entire life everyone will tell you “No” and you must tell them “Yes”. I love that the message can be applied to anything we aspire to do.
My “I Did It” moment: When I completed my first marathon. Literally, until I crossed the finish line I thought there was a 60% chance I’d just collapse and die at some point on the course.

5 things I can’t live without: The Internet, lip balm, Terra Chips,  a journal, and sunshine (I swear, it recharges me).

My favorite way to work out: Trying new things to add a little spice to my routine and avoid boredom. Some of my favorites? TRX, CrossFit, and pole dancing. Next on my list is the flying trapeze!

My biggest indulgence: Coca-cola. It takes everything in me to drink this in moderation.

I’m happiest when I’m: Helping other women look and feel their best. I want every woman in this world to genuinely smile every time they look in the mirror.

My fitness mantra:
You never regret a workout but you almost always regret skipping one. (Great mantra!)

Fit Blogger We Love: Chic Runner

The first thing about Chic Runner’s blog that got our attention? The breathtaking views from her runs in Southern California. The second thing: Danica pretty much eats, breathes and sleeps running, with posts about race recaps, exercise gear reviews and pre- and post-workout meals. Here’s what this dedicated runner told us about her favorite fit things:

My favorite way to work out: I love running the most, but when training for a full marathon, I totally jump on the burn out bandwagon because it’s SO much training! When I’m not training for a full, I love the gym and doing yoga and pilates. Another new and fun thing that I’ve discovered I love is swimming. I don’t love the time it takes you to get ready after though.

On my fit life list: Alright, you’ve got me. I know I must run the New York Marathon once, and of course – the ultimate – Boston Marathon once. May be a few years, but I’ll get there. I want to do more interesting types of workouts too, kickboxing, karate, or martial arts.

My fave fit snack: I absolutely love avocado and low-fat cottage cheese! I would have never guessed they go together, but they are delicious and the perfect pair! I also love low-fat popsicles and pita with hummus.

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: I know it’s so bad, but I LOVE The Lonely Island when I work out, and I catch myself giggling along to their songs.

My “I Did It” moment: Oddly enough I was training for my first half marathon, The Long Beach International City Bank Half Marathon, and it was the very first time I ever ran 10 miles. I have never had that feeling where I felt so accomplished. All day I kept repeating to myself, that I ran TEN whole miles! It was crazy to know I had run so far and it made me feel awesome about training and running.

My biggest motivator: I think my biggest motivation is seeing others and what they can push themselves to do. It makes me want to do the same thing. I do love working out because I enjoy it and it makes me feel great. After a hard workout at the gym or a fantastic run, nothing can wipe that glowing smile off my face!

On my fit life list: I’m envious of the chicks who can hold those extremely advanced yoga poses. I’m still in the basic stages of yoga, but I’ve already experienced big time improvements in my balance and flexibility. My plan is to continue practicing yoga consistently and work my way up to the most advanced poses.

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: This is one embarrassment that I wear like a badge of honor. It’s the song, “It’s Peanut Butter Jelly Time.” Check it out on YouTube. I put it on to dance with my kids to fit in some family cardio. Ohhh, the happy shame!

My fave fit snack: Call me the strange one, but broccoli is my favorite snack. I steam it early in the morning, and then chill it in the fridge for a mid-morning or afternoon snack. Yes, I eat it cold! I love the taste, but I’m also compelled to keep chewing broccoli because of its anti-cancer benefits.

My biggest indulgence: Mmmm. Cake! I can serve my food trap extra large cake slices with zero guilt. Why? Although I take my cake eating very seriously, I reserve it for special occasions only a few times per year, so why not indulge?

Olympic sport I’d love to try: Since competitive cake eating will never be an Olympic sport, I’ll settle for gymnastics. As a child, I always wanted to be a gymnast, but never had the opportunity to train. It’s amazing what the human body can do. I’m not ruling out that back handspring I’ve always wanted to do!

Jenn Walters: I’d like to run a triathlon, backpack in the Tetons, work out with one of my fitness icons (like Bob Harper, Jillian Michaels or Gwen Stefani), run a sub 7-minute mile, write a series of books based on the Fit Bottomed Girls’ mindset and lifestyle, and be a healthy mother. 
Erin Whitehead: Two activities I want to do but haven’t had the guts yet: Try a rock-climbing wall and take a trapeze class! I’d also love to hike Half Dome in Yosemite.

My biggest indulgence:
Jenn: Wine and chocolate — preferably together.
Erin: A margarita! And the occasional Snickers Ice Cream bar or a mint chocolate chip ice cream cone.

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to:
Jenn: Oh, there are so many. Lately, “Piece of Me” by Britney Spears.

5 things I can’t live without: coffee, WIFI internet access, my iPod, lip balm, and my foam roller (we have a love/hate relationship…)

On my fit life list: A triathlon! This year I plan to participate in at least one–wish me luck!

My fave fit snack: This is my favorite “go to” either before a workout or a night on the town when I need to maintain energy: take a boiled egg, pop out the yolk and add hummus. LUV!

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: “Stone in Love” by Journey reminds of all of those incredibly catchy & cheesy,  fist-pumping anthems from the 80s and it never fails to make me smile when it comes up on my iPod shuffle.  (Oh If I could play air-guitar and cycle at the same time…)

My “I Did It” moment: My first century ride! 100 miles across Long Island. I was born there and it was such a rush to visit all of these towns from Babylon out to the Hamptons. I can still recall perfectly the crowd greeting me and the welcome crew yelling out “You did it—good job!” I did indeed finish and it felt awesome.
