Fit Blogger We Love: Bex Life

Written on May 10, 2012 at 3:36 pm , by

Rebekah loves her family and squeezes in workouts with them, too!

Rebekah, or Bex, is one fit lady who makes it clear that loving life is really the most important thing she could teach anyone. A mother of four beautiful children, she’s a fitness and yoga instructor in south Jersey who—get this—has her own chickens, goats and organic garden, despite living in an urban area. Neat! Read on to find out how she stays happy and healthy, then check out Bex Life for more inside scoop on all things fitness (with some farming, of course).

My favorite way to work out: My best workouts are always with my husband. He has never been a fitness person, and he just started training with me recently. Witnessing his transformation and progress from week to week is so motivating, and it compels me to work harder toward my own goals.

My fitness mantra: There’s no excuse not to workout. There are fitness opportunities everywhere! You don’t need a gym or fancy equipment. You just need you and a little imagination. I’ve gotten amazing workouts just lugging my laundry basket up and down the stairs or running around the playground with my kids.

My go-to fit snack: Bananas! I often joke that I have a four-a-day banana habit, but it’s completely true. I don’t think I could ever get tired of eating them—in smoothies, made into ice cream, with peanut butter, etc. I’ll take them however I can get them!

Fit Blogger We Love: NYC Running Mama

Written on April 26, 2012 at 5:27 pm , by

Michele ran hard at the NYC marathon to get to the finish line sooner, where her family was waiting!

With racing season in full swing, a little run-spiration may be right up your alley (it’s not just us, right?). If that’s the case, head over to NYC Running Mama and get to know Michele, a total running rockstar who loves breaking a serious sweat. She’s in the middle of her second pregnancy too, so all you fit mamas out there can see how she handles running through each trimester while still taking great care of her body and baby. Keep reading for a quick glimpse of what Michele can’t live without and who she loves seeing at the finish line, then pop over to her page for more run fun.

My “I Did It” moment: Finishing my first race/marathon in sub-4 (3:54.02). I crossed the finish line and realized I hadn’t viewed myself as a runner or given myself credit for how fast I could run.

My motivation comes from: My son. I want him to grow up with a healthy, active mom that he is proud of. I was lucky enough to have my husband and son waiting for me at the finish line of this year’s New York City marathon. Ideally, that is how I’ll get to finish all of my races.

On my fit life list: My bucket list is constantly changing – there are probably close to 20 races on it at the moment. Highlights include running the five major marathons (NYC and Boston are completed), participating in (and finishing!) an Ironman, finishing the Badwater Ultramarathon.

5 things I can’t live without:

  1. My husband and son, my parents and my three sisters. I talk to my sisters every single day. They’re my support system, my best friends and my toughest critics.
  2. A treadmill. During the winter months, I run when my 15-month-old son is napping.
  3. My iPod. I love listening to music when I run.
  4. Sparkly Soul headbands. My go-to headband for all of my runs.
  5. Makeup. I very rarely leave home without a touch of mascara and eye liner (I even run and race with some on!)

My biggest indulgence: Wendy’s Frosty and French Fries. It’s a reward for me after a long or especially tough run!

Fit Blogger We Love: Honey, I Shrunk the Gretchen

Written on April 19, 2012 at 3:33 pm , by

Gretchen loves treats, healthy or not! It's all about moderation.

Remember the oldie-but-goodie film, “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids?” That was a great flick. So we can’t help but smile every time we type Honey, I Shrunk the Gretchen into our search bar, waiting to hop onto Gretchen’s blog and catch up on her weight loss journey. From the fun, witty adventures to the serious, self-reflective posts, she knows how to entertain us while keeping it real. We wanted to find out more about this blogger’s  must-haves, so we went straight to the source. Read on to find out what keeps her motivated and what indulgences she still struggles with today.

My favorite way to work out: With variety! When I first started to get healthy, I tried to force myself into long distance running because I thought that’s what I needed to do in order to be “healthy.” Turns out, I don’t really like running! So while I recognize the need for cardio for my overall weight loss and fitness goals, I’m much better at maintaining a regular workout schedule if there’s a lot of variety involved. Now I switch it up between short runs, weight training and fun classes, like Zumba!

My fave fit snack: In between meals, I’m a huge fan of the peanut butter/almond butter and celery or apple slices combo. You get a little sugar to energize you, a little fiber to keep you full and some delicious, filling healthy fats to stave off hunger. Win-win-win!

My biggest indulgence: As much as I love to cook, I also tend to eat out a lot. I’m a huge foodie and love trying new restaurants, and it’s difficult for me to pass up the pastas, steaks and creamy, dreamy dishes when I do. I’m really working on finding the balance in eating out without always overindulging because I don’t believe you should have to completely give up something you love in the name of health.

5 things I can’t live without: My family (we’re super close), sushi (it’s my favorite!), my iPhone (how did we exist before smart phones?), Harry Potter (confession: I am a huge nerd), and my two amazing miniature schnauzers, Harry and Daxter.

My motivation comes from: My blog, funnily enough! I weighed 246 when I started it, but didn’t have any kind of “Eureka!” moment where I saw a photo or someone said something that made me decide to change my life and get healthy. I simply said, “I want to start a weight loss blog.” A year and a half and 60 pounds later, it’s my blog that keeps me going. Having that accountability that writing every day provides, as well as the amazing support of my readers, has really been the key to making it all stick this time around.

Fit Blogger We Love: Enthusiastic Runner

Written on April 12, 2012 at 3:46 pm , by

Jocelyn loves to travel to new places, train for races and enjoy life!

Jocelyn grew up in Connecticut, where she was enthusiastic about sports all year round. But when she moved to the Big Apple after a four-year college stint in Oklahoma, she realized a new fitness goal was in order. So Enthusiastic Runner was born, where Jocelyn details her fitness adventures as she trains for her second marathon and first half-Ironman! We love catching up with her throughout the week, so get to know her here then pop over to her blog for more fun.

My favorite way to work out: Any workout that I can do outdoors! Whether it’s running, hiking, biking, skiing, tennis, softball or golf—I just love being outside.

5 things I can’t live without:

  1. My family and friends. I’m very lucky that I have amazing parents, a great sister/roommate (Hi Krista!) and friends who GET me.
  2. Running shoes. I always keep a pair at work in case I want to run home from work. [Editor's note: check out our 2012 sneaker guide to find your perfect fit!]
  3. My passport. I absolutely love to travel. Last year, I went to Singapore, the Philippines, Kenya, Tanzania, Turkey, Seattle, Oregon, Oklahoma, Austin, Montreal and Bermuda—all for fun!
  4. Country music. I can’t get enough! One of my favorite songs to run to is “No Reins” by Rascal Flatts.
  5. TV. As much as I love being outside, I’m addicted to watching the tube. I like to think they balance each other out.

On my fit life list: I have a few, actually. I want to qualify for the Boston Marathon (this might take a while), climb Mount Kilimanjaro, go to surf camp and bike across the United States.

My fave fit snack: Picky Bars. I was introduced to them last year and now I am addicted. They taste great, plus they’re gluten and dairy-free!

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: “Faded” by soulDecision. It reminds me of high school dances (which were always fun)…and it’s really catchy!

Fit Blogger We Love: Bee Goes Bananas

Written on April 5, 2012 at 1:28 pm , by

Bee loves a sweet treat every once in a while!

Bee Goes Bananas reminds us of the simplicities in life. Even when her days are jam-packed with activities, she takes the time to relax with her loved ones and just be (or bee!). Her most important rule? Make sure you’re having fun! We think that’s something everyone should incorporate into their daily routine more often, don’t you?

Bee let us in on exactly how she likes to live it up and what piece of technology she can’t live without. You might be surprised!

My favorite way to work out: I used to spend day after day at the gym just going through the motions, doing the same interval workout on the same elliptical machine. That isn’t fun! I’ve learned to incorporate fitness into my daily life, whether I’m horseback riding, hiking with my dog, taking cycling classes or keeping up with the kids at work. I try to switch it up as much as possible to keep me excited and always wanting more!

5 things I can’t live without:

  1. My loved ones! My husband; my dog, Zeke; my family; friends; horses—I love them all!
  2. My camera. Ever since I owned my first one, it’s been attached to my hip wherever I go. I always have two cameras on me at any given moment, if not more!
  3. Cereal. I’ve tried giving it up, but I just can’t do it. I’ve learned moderation with cereal, though—I only eat one bowl a day now.
  4. Asics GT2150 running shoes. I have flat feet and I overpronate, but these shoes keep everything in alignment so I can comfortably move around all day. [Editor's note: Find your perfect sneaker in our 2012 sneaker guide in the April issue!]
  5. My cell phone. I know, it’s so bad! But I use it for everything. It’s my cookbook, interval timer, nutrition consultant and camera, along with many other things.

I’m happiest when I’m: On a horse! There’s nothing more peaceful and grounding than spending time with one. My favorite way to unwind at the end of a hectic day is to hop on one of my favorite horses bareback and feel connected to their every step.

My fave fit snack: A small peanut butter and banana wrap. I spread a bit of the nut butter on a small whole wheat tortilla wrap, then roll it around a banana. Sometimes I even sprinkle a bit of chocolate protein powder on top of top of the banana before rolling it up. It’s easy, fast and doesn’t require a lot of ingredients.

My fitness mantra: “Do what you love and love what you do.” This isn’t exactly a fitness mantra, but I think it’s something that carries over to all areas of life. You only live once! I can’t stress that enough. Why do something if you don’t enjoy some aspect of the process? Try a new sport, pick up a hobby, experiment with healthy versions of your favorite foods. Do anything that will get you moving and help you live a healthy lifestyle, and make sure you’re having fun while doing it!

Fit Blogger We Love: Blogilates

Written on March 29, 2012 at 3:08 pm , by

Cassey still makes time for her workouts, even when she's on the gorgeous beach!

Talk about taking the bull by the horns: Cassey Ho, a Pilates and fitness instructor, founder of oGorgeous yoga bags (featured in our 2011 holiday gift guide!) and creator of Blogilates hasn’t just turned her passion for healthy living into a career, she’s made it a critical part of her life. We caught up with this chic blogger to find out more about the Olympic sport she wants to try and what you’ll often catch her munching on.

My favorite way to work out: With passion! But if you’re looking for a literal answer, then strength training and Pilates!

5 things I can’t live without: My glasses, my drive, YouTube, peanut butter and the Blogilates community!

My fave fit snack: I’d say nuts, but I’m pretty sure I eat way too many for them to be considered a “fit snack” anymore.

Olympic sport I’d love to try: Figure skating! What girl doesn’t want to glide around in a Swarovski-encrusted mini dress?!

My “I Did It” moment: When I was able to turn my passion for healthy living, fitness and fashion design into a real career. I am so thankful to my students across the globe who do my YouTube workouts, to the enthusiastic readers of  my blog and to the fitness fashionistas who believe in and use my oGorgeous gym and yoga bags. You guys are all helping me live my dream! Thank you so much.

Fit Blogger We Love: Sprint 2 The Table

Written on March 22, 2012 at 1:15 pm , by

Laura (left) and her family are all smiles after a Thanksgiving 10K!

If you’re looking for a foodie friend who’s willing to sprinkle in some fitness, Laura is your girl. Her quick, easy recipes at Sprint 2 The Table inspire us to hit the kitchen, and her running adventures in between meals are just as satisfying. We caught up with this fit blogger to find out which race she’s dying to run and what she can’t head to the gym without.

On my fit life list: The Nike Women’s Marathon. I’ve never run a marathon and this race awards Tiffany’s necklaces rather than medals. What better motivation is there than that?

My fave fit snack: I am a smoothie fanatic. Post-workout, there’s nothing I love more than a Liquid Sweet Potato Pie protein shake. The protein helps build muscle and the sweet potato adds some much-needed carbs for energy. It sounds weird, but I promise it’s heaven in a glass.

Biggest indulgence: There’s a restaurant in Atlanta that sells something called a “Nemesis cake.” This flourless chocolate cake with a glass of Zinfadel is my nemesis.

My fitness mantra: To borrow from a T-shirt slogan, it’s “Every Damn Day.” I try to do something every day to get moving. My job requires me to sit at a desk most days, so getting just 30 minutes of movement in does wonders for my fitness level, not to mention my sanity!

My gym bag must-have: Gum. I cannot work out without a piece in my mouth. People laugh at me in the gym when I’m blowing bubble while pumping iron!

We’re a big fan of Laura’s quick, healthy recipes, so we asked her to share a favorite. Check out the recipe below!

Fit Blogger We Love: Caitlin Lives Well

Written on March 15, 2012 at 3:23 pm , by

Caitlin is all smiles after finishing the Chicago marathon in 2011!

A devoted runner with a fun-loving attitude, Caitlin from Caitlin Lives Well is a great role model for finding balance within healthy living. Her tagline sums it up quite nicely, actually: “choosing health, one day at a time.” After all, that’s all anyone can do, isn’t it? Read on to find out what makes her happiest and what intense workout trend has piqued her interest.

My favorite way to work out: Running, indoor cycling and I’m a new CrossFit convert. Last week I did a WOD [Editor's note: This is CrossFit speak for "Workout of the Day."] and couldn’t walk down stairs without cringing for three days, so I was immediately hooked.

On my fit life list: Complete a triathlon, run the Dublin and London marathons, become a run coach and coach new runners/first-time marathoners.

My fitness mantra: I run because I can. When I get too caught up in PRs (personal record), splits and bad runs, I remind myself that I’m blessed with my health and the ability to move.

I’m happiest when I’m: Running on the beach. Running, endorphins, sun, sand, sweat…it doesn’t get any better.

My motivation comes from: Surrounding myself with awesome, fit people. I have an amazing husband and incredible friends, teachers and coaches—working out with them is fun, inspiring and keeps me going.

Fit Blogger We Love: The Wannabe Athlete

Written on March 8, 2012 at 3:18 pm , by

Callie rocked the Disney Princess Half-Marathon in February. Doesn't she make a pretty Belle?

Have you ever read a blog and felt like you were never going to reach the same levels of healthy living superstardom? (We know we have!) While those blogs give us a great, powerful dose of inspiration, sometimes it’s nice to remember that not everyone needs to be a hardcore elite athlete. In those moments, we head over to The Wannabe Athlete to catch up with Callie. Her fun-loving, “always aspiring to do better” attitude keeps us looking forward to her next post, and her adorable baby leaves us feeling all mushy gushy inside. Read on to find out what she can’t live without and how she finds the motivation to just. keep. pushing. through the tough stuff.

My favorite way to work out: Lately, it’s running. I never thought I would be someone who said that! But ever since having my first baby last summer, I’ve realized it’s the easiest thing to work into my crazy schedule. I’ve also gone through phases of loving Tae Bo (anyone else?), triathlons, a kickboxing class and yoga.

My “I Did It” moment: Crossing the finish line at my first half-marathon just eight months after having a baby. I saw the finish line come in to view and just kept saying (out loud), “Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh.” I couldn’t believe I had done it!

5 things I can’t live without:

  1. My family, obviously.
  2. An Internet connection—I am a blogger after all!
  3. Peanut butter. My husband can’t stand the smell of it, but I just can’t live without it. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t eat at least one thing with peanut butter on it!
  4. Sunshine. I crave it! I’m the type of girl who likes to have all of the windows open with the sun streaming in as brightly as possible. I get that from my mom. I also could never live in a place where I can’t wear flip flops for at least 11 months of the year. I’m a Floridian, through and through.
  5. My faith. It’s absolutely vital to my existence.

My fave fit snack: Chobani! My husband actually told me to put this as one of the five things I can’t live without. He might be right.

On my fit life list: Running a marathon. (Gulp!)

My motivation comes from: I want to set a good example of a healthy lifestyle for my son. But I have to admit, being able to fit back into my pre-pregnancy jeans has been a pretty motivating goal as well!

Fit Blogger We Love: Eat: Watch: Run

Written on March 1, 2012 at 3:10 pm , by

Paula owned her "I Did It" moment after finishing her second marathon in December 2011.

If you’re in need of a good laugh with a mix of running and tough workouts, head over to Eat: Watch: Run. We love that Paula isn’t embarrassed easily and incorporates a balance of “everything in moderation” into her life. Keep reading to find out what pushes her to the finish line, then head to her blog for more comedic action.

My fave fit snack: I love bananas or saltines with sunflower seed butter. If bananas or saltines aren’t available, I’m not against dipping a finger in the jar.

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio. Actually, I didn’t think it was embarrassing until it came on my iPod in the car and my husband said, “Coolio? Really?”

Olympic sport I’d love to try: Figure skating. I love how graceful it looks. Also, it’s the only sport where you’re expected to wear sequined leotards, which I fully support. When I ice skate though, I have to hold on to the sides of the rink to stay vertical, so it might be best to go with Olympic ribbon twirling instead.

My “I Did It” moment: Finishing my second marathon. You think it would have been my first, but I was so miserable after that first 26.2 that I only focused on the disappointment. My second marathon showed me that trying again is so important and that failing doesn’t define you, but shapes you.

My motivation comes from: Inside myself. Wow, that sounds cheesy. But it’s true. Staying active is what makes me feel happy, healthy and grounded. I can’t be happy in other aspects of my life when I’m not happy with myself, and that feeling is what keeps me going.
