Fit Blogger We Love: Clean Eating Chelsey

Written on August 16, 2012 at 1:22 pm , by

Chelsey stretches post-race to help jumpstart recovery!

There’s not much we love more than a tasty, easy-to-whip-up recipe for any meal of the day. Which is why we love popping over to Clean Eating Chelsey when hunger strikes – we’re always guaranteed to find something as yummy as it is healthy! Pop on over for some inspiration of your own and you might find some fun – we hear there’s a delicious giveaway going on this week.

My favorite way to work out: Running! I’ve had to cut back lately, but running will always be my favorite way to exercise. I have run a few half-marathons, and I hope to continue to compete in races in the future. It’s a great time for me to clear my head and get some “me” time.

On my fit life list: I would love to run a marathon or complete a triathlon some day!

My fave fit snack: Raisins and almonds – I usually eat that combination every day after school (I’m a teacher) to get me through the afternoon until dinner time.

My biggest indulgence: Chocolate – I can’t live without it.

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: I’ve got something even better: during my last half-marathon (Disney Half in January 2012), I sang out loud to Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never.” Apparently that song made me run really fast because I was flying as I was singing it! I figured I would never see those people again or they couldn’t hear me anyway.

Fit Blogger We Love: Run For Your Life

Written on August 9, 2012 at 10:20 am , by

Emilia crushes her previous half-marathon PR in Houston. Hard work pays off!

A runner since her teens, Emilia from Run For Your Life knows a thing or two about the sport – and all the ups and downs that come with it. After sitting on the sidelines for a few months due to an injury, she’s back in the game and more than ready to ramp up training for her third go-around at the ING NYC Marathon this fall. We can’t wait to cheer her to the finish line!

My favorite way to work out: Running, of course! I don’t have a gym membership, but I’ll occasionally do something different to mix things up (like racing to the top of the Empire State building last spring). After having to sit out most of the summer due to injury, though, I’m more grateful than ever to be able to run in the mornings again.

On my fit life list: Qualifying for and running the Boston Marathon. While I’m definitely proud of my current best times (I broke four hours in this year’s Houston Marathon), I’m the queen of positive splitting right now and have a long way to go to make this goal happen. Maybe by the time I’m 30?

My “I Did It” moment: Finishing my first marathon, the 2010 New York City Marathon, in 4:09 – more than 20 minutes faster than my goal time. It was my long-term goal all throughout college and I was really proud of the training I put into running it one year after graduation. My second NYCM running in 2011 did not go as well, so I’m looking forward to showing the Queensboro bridge who’s boss when I return on November 4!

My fave fit snack: Chobani zero percent strawberry Greek yogurt. I’m not much of a breakfast person, so I eat this with a side of frozen mango pieces as my “morning snack” almost every morning when I get to work.

My biggest indulgence: Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream. It’s a Texas thing. I rarely go a day without a dessert and this is most often it. I know my flavor choice sounds so, well, “vanilla,” but seriously, it’s the best.

Fit Blogger We Love: One Twenty Five

Written on July 19, 2012 at 3:54 pm , by

Liz conquered the Berlin Marathon, and made sure everyone knew her name while doing it!

If you’re looking for someone who lays everything out on the line, regardless of what other people are going to think of her, then you need to immediately click over to One Twenty Five. Liz, the writer behind this weight-loss blog, shares her uncensored thoughts, which is exactly what we love about her. Now if we could just pack up and visit her in Melbourne, life would be pretty swell, don’t you think?

On my fit life list: Drum roll please…an Ironman. I know it sounds ridiculous to say as, um, I’ve never biked more than a 5K or swam more than one kilometer. But (and this is a big but), I once dreamed of doing a full marathon when I was over 200 pounds and the mere thought of a 5K made my heart skip a beat. And guess what? I ran that full marathon. So I know it’s possible to dream big and accomplish something once deemed impossible.

I’m happiest when I’m: doing CrossFit or running. Wait, what? Did you really believe me? Let’s clarify that: I’m happiest when I just finished a CrossFit session or a run. The moment I stop my watch after a run I didn’t want to do, or the moment I fall to the ground to get my breath back after a CrossFit WOD (workout of the day), is always my favorite. They’re my happy, self high-five moments. It’s always a battle to get out there, but always so worth it when I’m done.

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to is: Are you ready for this? I don’t actually listen to music when I run. Nope, I listen to super-duper-steamy-trashy romance novels. I found out when I get into peak training for a marathon, I can’t download music quick enough, so instead I listen to, “she felt his burning eyes…” They’re entertaining, cheap on iTunes and so silly that it’s easy to distract myself from the pain of a long run.

My “I Did It” moment: Since I decided not to be a couch potato and actually knock off some of my “bucket list” tasks, I have to admit I’ve managed to accomplish some pretty awesome things. Three full marathons, a month-long hike to Mt. Everest’s Base Camp, and a move to Melbourne, Australia, to name a few. But my favorite “I Did It moment” was, without a doubt, when I was running the last 50 meters of the Chicago Marathon. Going from obese to running a full marathon within a year is very emotional, and seeing that finish line was just incredibly overwhelming.

My motivation comes from: Knowing I am capable of more than I’ve done. Which yeah, I know sounds really corny, but I’ve decided I am no better or worse than anyone in this world, so why can’t I do all the awesome things out there? Exactly – I can.

Fit Blogger We Love: Chef Katelyn

Written on July 12, 2012 at 4:41 pm , by

Katelyn proudly dons orange, Syracuse's main color - no wonder she went to such an athletic school!

Katelyn and her blog, Chef Katelyn, can be summed up in four words, which happen to be her mantra: Eat Clean, Sweat Dirty. Always striving to live that phrase to the fullest, this Syracuse University college girl gives us the low-down on her hardcore workouts, delicious meals and the in-between stuff that happens in her daily life. She’s even nice enough to let us in on her blogging secrets (spoiler: you don’t have to carry around a huge camera to score pretty pictures), in case you want to jazz up your own site. Talk about the total package.

My favorite way to work out: Yoga or CrossFit. I also love tabata-style interval workouts. I’m a sweat junkie.

5 things I can’t live without: My iPhone (21st-century college student problems), Vega vanilla protein powder, coffee, my family (is that more than one thing?) and a super-boho pair of sandals.

My biggest indulgence: Frozen yogurt. Some of you might roll your eyes because “frozen yogurt is so healthy,” but it’s really not that healthy when I make it. Think: 25 percent frozen yogurt, 75 percent toppings. Most of said toppings are a variety of Reese’s (yum)!

My motivation comes from: My readers, fellow bloggers, Instagram-ers, Twitter buddies and FitFluential rock stars. I would say all of my motivation comes from inside, but the real boost comes when a reader shares his or her accomplishments of the day. It keeps me going!

My fitness mantra: #EatCleanSweatDirty. It’s the challenge, my logo and my daily mantra. I even put it on pillowcases.

Fit Blogger We Love: Food. Fitness. Fashion.

Written on July 5, 2012 at 12:11 pm , by

Ali's all for celebrating after hard, sweaty runs.

A former smoker, Ali from Food. Fitness. Fashion knows what it’s like to have difficulty breathing. But did she let that stop her from tackling a 5K? Nope. Nor did it hold her back from running 8Ks, half-marathons and even a marathon! Talk about a health comeback. We wanted to find out more about what this girl loves to run to and the gear she truly can’t get her sweat on without. Read on for her answers, then pop over to her blog for more fit-spiration.

On my fit life list: As a runner and Bostonian, running the Boston marathon is a huge dream that may become a reality this Spring! I’d also like to conquer a high ropes course this summer. I work at a program for teens with autism spectrum disorders, and I would love to model fearlessness for them on the ropes course, even though I’m terrified of heights!

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: I’m not easily embarrassed, but there is one song I listen to when running that I will admit is super cheesy – “One Moment in Time,” by Whitney Houston. It reminds me of all of the times I exceeded my own expectations with regards to education, fitness and my career.

5 things I can’t live without: Besides my husband, Adam, and my miniature daschund, Oscar – coffee, my Canon Rebel camera, Garmin Forerunner 405, Brooks Adrenaline running shoes and red lipstick.

I’m happiest when I’m: Running and doing CrossFit! I love the feeling that running gives me and that I’m able to set small, measurable, attainable goals and reach them. CrossFit makes me feel strong, fearless, powerful and exhausted. To me, those are perfect workouts.

Fit Blogger We Love: Emily Bites

Written on June 21, 2012 at 1:00 pm , by

Emily loves creating fast, healthy recipes—and we love her for that!

We’re all busy. So when it’s time to whip up a healthy dinner that won’t have us slaving away for hours, where’s a girl to turn? We love hopping over to Emily Bites for a dose of inspiration, where we’re guaranteed a simple recipe that’s going to tickle our taste buds. Heck, even Anderson Cooper loves her stuff! We chatted with the chef in the kitchen to find out more about how she keeps her fit life balanced and which snack she always loves to whip up. Oh, we managed to nab a yummy recipe from her too. You can thank us later.

My favorite way to work out: Definitely Zumba. I love to dance and Zumba is so much fun. If I wasn’t sweating so hard, I’d almost forget I was working out! I always wear my heart rate monitor when I go and at the end of class I get a kick out of seeing how many calories I’ve burned doing an activity I love.

On my fit life list: To run a half-marathon someday, preferably the Disney Princess Half because it looks like a blast (and I really want a race bib that says “Princess Emily” on it). I used to run a few years back, but I got out of it. I’m currently walking and running in intervals, trying to work my way back up to straight running.

My fave fit snack: I love hummus with veggies, particularly the homemade Buffalo Wing Hummus I have on my blog. I almost never buy pre-made hummus now that I know how easy it is to make at home.

Most embarrassing song I’ll admit I work out to: This is hard because I listen to a lot of embarrassing ’90s music. Maybe “I Wanna Be Bad” by Willa Ford?

Olympic sport I’d love to try: I used to figure skate when I was growing up, so if it’s the winter Olympics, I’d definitely go with skating. As for the summer Olympics, I’ve always wanted to play tennis. I have a racquet and I’ve fooled around with it a little bit, but I would love to be great at it.

Keep reading for a delicious snack straight from Emily’s kitchen!

Fit Blogger We Love: Run To The Finish

Written on June 14, 2012 at 3:17 pm , by

Amanda laces up her sneaks often, but isn't afraid to branch out!

Amanda from Run To The Finish sure loves pounding the pavement, but we dig her passion for all things athletic. Although running is her true fitness passion, her experiences with yoga, kickboxing and stand up paddle boarding prove that she’s willing to share the love! To return the favor, we found out which sport she’d be aiming for gold in if she hopped over to London, and what running gear she simply can’t live without.

I’m happiest when I’m: In the middle of a long run, having found a rhythm that allows me to simply move while sorting through my thoughts and visualizing an amazing future.

My motivation comes from: A sense of pride that I feel each time I accomplish a new speed, distance or workout. It’s a reminder that in life I can do more if I move past my perceived limitations.

My gym bag must-have: Oakley sunglasses. I didn’t realize how much energy I was wasting squinting during every run here in Miami, and they’ve stopped my headaches!

Olympic sport I’d love to try: Beach volleyball! If I could have picked a sport to do for a job it would have been this. I love being outdoors and these women are serious athletes.

My fave fit snack: Dessert hummus has become my go-to because I love sweets, but need protein. Here’s how I make it:

  • 1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup nut butter
  • 1/2 of a banana
  • 1/4 cup ground flax seed
  • 1/2 cup shredded carrots (sometimes I swap for zucchini!)
  • 1/4 cup almond milk
  • 1 dropper vanilla stevia

Blend the above ingredients in a food processor and then stir in some fruit! I love cherries, blueberries, peaches or whatever else is in season.

Fit Blogger We Love: Mile Posts

Written on May 31, 2012 at 3:12 pm , by

Dorothy, seen here solo, often trains with a triple running stroller.

Dorothy from Mile Posts has had quite a journey, from overweight and unhealthy (“I’d sit on the sidelines”), to a college cross country runner, to now, a mom of three who appears in Saucony commercials—really (see below)! She says she pushes through challenges to teach her kids to keep going when the going gets tough.

Read on for the 3:11 marathoner’s inspiration, her motivating mantra and more.

I’m happiest when I’m: Being active. I love how I feel when I am running and the feeling gets better after it’s over. I chase that runner’s high on every run.

My biggest indulgence: Cupcakes. Just one is never enough.

My fitness mantra: DREAM BIG RUN LONG. It sums up what I do in life and running.

My “I Did It” moment: Crossing the finish line of my first marathon I knew I was forever changed. I knew I wasn’t just a girl who ran once in awhile or who wanted to become a runner. I was a runner and a marathoner at that!

My motivation comes from: My kids. They make every day of my life better. I feel like I have purpose in my life now and feel so blessed to be their mother.

Olympic sport I’d love to try: I’d rather just be an Olympian for a day. Just thinking about how amazing they all are at their individual sports gives me chills. If I could be anyone for a day I’d be Paula Radcliffe and hopefully win the Olympic marathon!

We’re in love with Dorothy’s Pinterest page for running inspiration. Hungry for more? Check out her “Find Your Strong” video below!

Fit Blogger We Love: The Lean Green Bean

Written on May 24, 2012 at 3:13 pm , by

When she's not creating new recipes, Lindsay loves to head outdoors.

Lindsay from The Lean Green Bean knows a thing or two about good food (just look at her substantial recipe database!). And as you might guess by the name of her blog, many of those dishes are health-conscious—Lindsay is studying to become a registered dietitian. We caught up with creative and fit foodie to learn more about what makes her smile and how she satisfies her sweet tooth.

My favorite way to work out: At home! I love putting together Tabata and circuit workouts that get my heart pumping but don’t require a lot of equipment and never take more than 20 to 30 minutes.

5 things I can’t live without: My family and friends, my iPhone, fresh fruits and vegetables, my contacts or glasses and a water bottle.

I’m happiest when I’m… Spending time outside with my husband!

My favorite fit snack: Plain Chobani Greek yogurt with fresh fruit, almonds and chia seeds.

My fitness mantra: “Do something today that your future self will thank you for”

Fit Blogger We Love: Munchin with Munchkin

Written on May 17, 2012 at 3:21 pm , by

Kris loves turning sinful dishes into heavenly (and healthy!) treats.

Kris, a fun, food-loving Canadian living in Texas blogs about her cooking adventures over at Munchin with Munchkin. A big fan of scouring the land for local produce, she has a knack for creating quick, tasty and good-for-you meals from these fresh ingredients. We caught up with the culinary connoisseur to find out what’s always in her gym bag and which sweet treat she likes after a tough workout.

My biggest motivator: My mum. She is a breast cancer survivor and has been in remission for over 10 years. She credits her success with eating right and exercising often. Seeing firsthand the struggles she went through keeps me motivated to lead a healthy lifestyle.

My gym bag must-have: Gossip magazines! When I go to the gym I hide the screen on the treadmill with a magazine. I get caught up in all the gossip and it distracts me from how much time I have left.

5 things I can’t live without:

  1. I would be lost without my food processor.
  2. My fiance, family, friends and my two cats. I am so grateful to have them in my life.
  3. Farmers markets and my herb garden. Fresh produce is so important for a healthy lifestyle!
  4. My camera. A photography career is pretty hard without it.
  5. The food blog community and my supportive readers. They are the lifeline to my blog.

My fave fit snack: Before working out I like to eat baked oatmeal; it gives me the energy I need to run that extra mile. After working out, I usually crave something cold. In my food processor I pulse together frozen bananas, peanut butter, protein powder and some cocoa powder—it tastes just like rich and creamy peanut butter cup ice cream without all the dairy, saturated fat and sugar. It’s also full of protein, which helps me refuel after a long run in the Texas heat.

Olympic sport I’d love to try: Luge! There’s something about sliding down a mountain like a human bullet that appeals to me. It can’t be any more dangerous than sliding down a hill on a cafeteria tray coated in cooking oil, like we used to do in college.

Want to try a simple, yummy recipe from Kris? Keep reading for one of her fave breakfast dishes!
