Jennie Garth on Giving Back, Weight Loss Secrets and Staying in Shape

No Jock Jams here! Jennie Garth listens to mellow music to stay in the zone during a sweat session. (Photo courtesy Lindt)
Have you ever walked into a Lindt store before? I had not, until this week when I went to go see actress Jennie Garth kick off the Lindt Gold Bunny Celebrity Auction to raise funds for Autism Speaks. Let me tell you, it is a deliciously terrifying place if you have a sweet tooth. The walls are covered with chocolate, not to mention the gold bunnies that basically spoke to you as soon as you walked in the door. (I swear one of them whispered to me that I could take all their chocolate ears and no one would care). But luckily, watching Garth sign her bunny and looking more in shape than ever was enough motivation to keep me from ransacking the walls. Below, Garth chats with us on her latest fitness routine, weight loss tricks and how she stays in shape.
What made you decide to get involved in the Lindt Gold Bunny Celebrity Auction this year?
I have three daughters and Easter is a big family time holiday for us. It’s also a valuable time to tell them about the importance of giving back, so partnering up with Lindt for this is just something I can really feel good about.
What’s your fitness routine like these days?
I’m really into hiking and jogging with my dog right now. I recently got a really big dog and he needs exercise all the time, so that is something that is new for me. I work out in a gym with a trainer two to three days a week on top of that. Read more

Fitness Gala 2013: Sweating for a Good Cause

Editor in Chief Betty, Smash star Megan Hilty and Web Editor Colleen hang out before Dasha Libin’s Kettlebell Kickboxing workout.
Sure, we love dressing up as much as the next gal–but when we’re asked to go to a red carpet event in our spandex and sneakers, it’s pretty much a fitness editor’s dream come true. And that’s exactly what we did this weekend at the Fitness Gala 2013, benefitting Mariska Hargitay’s charity, the Joyful Hearts Foundation.
Between mingling with stars like Smash‘s Megan Hilty, who hosted the event, celebrity bartender Ryan Serhant of Million Dollar Listing (and yup, he’s as hunky off-screen as he is on) and noshing on healthy and delicious bites from celebrity chef and author of Cook Yourself Sexy Candice Kumai, we were in healthy living heaven.
But let’s not forget about the workout! Dasha Libin, creator of Kettlebell Kickboxing led a 45-minute master class for over 100 women who were excited to squat and swing to take a stand against sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse. True story: There was even a Gangnam Style-inspired move. Check out some pictures from the event below.

The Scoop on Jane Fonda’s Latest Workout DVD and Her Stay-Fit Secrets

Fonda is proof that fitness has no age limits. (Photo courtesy of Lionsgate Entertainment)
Written by Jennifer Fiorentino, editorial intern
When Jane Fonda released her debut exercise video in 1982, Jane Fonda’s Workout, it became its own genre, leading her to create 20 additional fitness videos and selling over 17 million copies combined, more than any other workout series. Now at 74, she’s looking great and feeling better than ever with her latest DVD Jane Fonda’s AM/PM Yoga for Beginners, which breaks up yoga into a rejuvenating morning session and an unwinding evening one.
We got the chance to chat with Fonda, who is one of our fitness icons about her latest workout routine and how she’s staying in shape these days.
What made you decide to create this new routine?
I started my new brand Prime Time three years ago aimed it at the baby boomer generation and older. I realized that there was a hole the series and yoga was that missing link.
Describe this new workout in one sentence.
It is yoga that has been marinating in Pilates. But it’s not pure yoga; I didn’t want it to be intimidating. Read more

Sweat Like a Celebrity—For Pennies

Stone’s bootcamp app is available beginning on December 1. (Image courtesy of Lacey Stone)
“If only I could afford a personal trainer and chef to work with me every day, maybe I’d have a body like Halle Berry.” Sound familiar? With legions of new fitness apps being released by celebrity trainers, you can train like a star in you own home or gym.
One recent release that caught our eye: Lacey Stone’s Extreme Bootcamp. Nicole Kidman, Amanda Seyfried, Brooke Shields and more have called Stone, a former college basketball and tennis player, their trainer. “I had many people tell me, ‘I wish I could take you with me in my pocket.’ I thought creating an app would be the easiest way to help everyone get fit,” Stone says. So that’s why she developed her new bootcamp app, available in app stores starting December 1 (just in time to help you squeeze in some quick workouts during the hectic holiday season). Click for video previews of the segments, which range from Abs & Arms to Medicine Ball & Cones.
Love training with apps? Try out a few from master trainers:
- Nike Training Club (Free, iTunes store)
- Jade of Spades ($1.99, iTunes store)
- Jillian Michaels Slim-Down Solution (Free, iTunes store)

How Stacy Keibler Squeezes in a Workout…No Matter What

Keibler has learned to fit in exercise any time, any where! (Photo courtesy of Valspar Paint)
Actress and former WWE wrestler Stacy Keibler has a busy social schedule. (But at least she’s got George Clooney as arm candy to go with her dress!) Whether it’s a gala, charity affair or an awards show, she seems to be always on the go. Which makes us wonder, how does she find the time to look so darn good? We chatted with Keibler at–you guessed it–an event as she helped launch the Valspar Love Your Color Guarantee Project, which is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to donate $1 up to $50,000 by virtually painting houses through the Valspar Facebook page (through November 7). Read below to see why Keibler got involved in the project and how she manages to stay fit with her jet-setting schedule.
What made you decide to be a part of the Valspar Love Your Color Guarantee Project and Habitat for Humanity initiative?
I’ve actually done a build with Habitat for Humanity, which was a rewarding experience for me. What I love about the Love Your Color Guarantee Project from Valspar is that not only if you don’t love your color that you’re putting up in your house they will guarantee a replacement color for you, but they are also going to give $21 million in cash and paint to Habitat for Humanity, so it’s an amazing partnership all around.

Best Bodies at the 2012 Emmy Awards

We’ve got biceps-envy. (Copyright © 2012 ABC, Inc. / Matt Brown)
The big winners at last night’s Emmy awards were the stars who looked sexy, gorgeous and body-confident. FITNESS picks the 10 stunners who stole the spotlight.
Best Revenge Body: Amy Poehler. Her plunging neckline and curve-hugging dress made this hot, soon-to-be-single mama look sizzling from every angle.
Best Legs: Heidi Klum. Her seafoam dress with a slit-up-to-there showed off her super-toned stems.
Best Arms: Julie Bowen. The devoted runner, who hits the jogging trail 5 to 6 times a week, has clearly also been doing biceps curls. Her amazingly defined arms deserve an Emmy of their own.
Best Cleavage: Kathy Griffith. Her beautiful black halter-style dress made this funny lady look super-sexy.
Best Abs: Jessica Pare. The Mad Men star accented her elegant white column dress with a black belt that showcased her tiny waist and flat abs.
Best Butt: Padma Lakshmi. Her orange fishtail gown hugged in all the right places and gave her a gorgeous rear view.
Best Curves: Julianne Hough, who runs, dances and lifts weights to stay in shape, looked va-va voom in a corset-style, mermaid dress.
Best Back: Sofia Vergara. It may not be the body part the Modern Family star is best known for, but the cut-out on the back of her gown drew all eyes to her beautifully toned lower back.
Best Baby Bump: Mom-to-be Claire Danes was glowing, gorgeous and healthy in her bright yellow gown.
Ultimate Age-Defier: Edie Falco looked fit and fabulous—and way younger than her 49 years—in a stunning navy and white Stella McCartney gown.

Spotted: FITNESS’ Fitness Editor on The Real Housewives of New York!

Jenna, our fitness editor making her RHONY debut!
I’d rather let you look in my middle school diary before letting you scan through my DVR. I’ll be the first to admit–it’s embarrassing. Living with my boyfriend has resulted in a complete TV monopoly, where suddenly it seems the only channel we get is ESPN. So needless to say, when the tube is up for grabs I do some serious reality TV damage, especially in the form of the Real Housewives series. I’m on a first name basis with all the gals–LuAnn, Tamra, Lisa, Gretchen, the whole gang!
So you can imagine my excitement when I actually knew someone on the show! That’s Jenna Autuori-Dedic (above), our fitness editor and SoulCycle-addict, who was attending a charity class at the studio for the One Step Ahead Foundation, an organization that helps kids with physical disabilities build self-esteem through athletics. Housewife Aviva Drescher is a spokeswoman for the foundation, as she became an amputee when she was just 6 years old after getting her leg caught in a conveyor belt. The class that Jenna attended along with the RHONY ladies raised enough money to give a boy involved with One Step Ahead his first set of prosthetic running legs, definitely a tear jerking moment for all who watched!
Jenna not only looks intrigued by the ladies in the class (hopefully none of them stole her bike!) but very ready to get her SoulCycle on. We basically have a celebrity on staff now, and Andy Cohen will be calling us any minute to do a spin-off–I can feel it!

How Giuliana Rancic Fits in Fitness
Between hosting E! News, covering red carpet events and preparing to be a mom, Giuliana Rancic manages to fit in fitness in her busy schedule. “I try to make it part of my everyday routine,” she said, even co-founding the website FabFitFun.com to help others be healthy. We chatted with the E! host after her morning workout to find out how she stays in shape.
What’s your fitness routine like?
I like to do weight training first thing in the morning at 5 a.m. in the gym. I do about 20 to 30 minutes with free weights. Then I do run/walk intervals on the treadmill for about 45 minutes. If I have an early call time at work, I’ll go to the gym in the afternoon and take a Zumba class, which is so much fun. Even when I’m busy, I’ll make time because I like to say “You’ll never regret going to the gym.”
What made you decide to take up Zumba?
I started two years ago after learning about it from an E! segment. I went to my first class with my coworker Jason Kennedy. I thought, “This is so much fun. I can’t believe they call it a workout!” I couldn’t wait to go back. I just got the Zumba Exhilarate DVDs and toning sticks from Zumba.com. You shake the sticks to sculpt your upper body while burning calories. I’m on the road a lot so this is something I can pack and do in my hotel room.
Do you and your husband Bill work out together?
We do weights together; he’s my spotter at the gym. We go for a long run together outdoors. I’d love to get him into Zumba, and I think can get him to try a DVD with me at home.
Your job requires a lot of traveling and a hectic schedule. How do you make sure you stay healthy?
I’m on an airplane for hours, and it’s hard finding healthy airplane food so I eat what’s there, enjoy it, but eat well when I get to my destination. It’s all about moderation. I keep bars and 100-calorie mixed nuts to always have something good to eat.
With a baby on the way (Ed’s note: Giuliana and Bill are expecting a baby boy from a surrogate), what kind of changes do you anticipate in your routine?
We’re committed to staying healthy, and know it will be hard going to the gym with the baby. So we’re turning one of the rooms in our house into a gym, putting a TV and treadmills in there. I’m going on maternity leave from E! for a few months and after that we’ll figure it out. It’s our first child so we’ll just figure things out as we go. It’s a learning process.
Tell us: Do you do Zumba like Giuliana?

Music Monday: Drop Dead Diva’s April Bowlby’s Get-Fit Playlist

As her role in Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva, April Bowlby plays Stacy Barrett, the best friend to a once vapid model whose soul has landed inside the body of a plus-sized attorney, Jane Bingum. April’s character is a wannabe model herself, who helps Jane navigate her future in her new, oversized physique.
In real life, April Bowlby loves a good sweat session. “I just started the most amazing ballet class and I am obsessed with it,” she says. “The first half is all about stretching out and warming up your muscles and the second half is at the barre. It has really helped with my posture.” When she’s not practicing her plies, Bowlby stays in shape with some simple cardio. “I love jogging on the treadmill. Once you find a rhythm it’s easy to get into the zone. I also love hiking with my dog.” To help you get in the zone this week, Bowlby shared her playlist that she listens to while pounding out the miles:
