As the big awards season circuit draws to a close with this Sunday’s Academy Awards, we wanted to share a few last picks for our fitness-related moments, ideas and people worth celebrating. Check out our other best of picks here and here!
Most Fun Red Carpet Moment of 2012 (so far): Sofia Vergara at the Golden Globes
The Modern Family star told Ryan Seacrest that she hit the gym for two sessions daily leading up to the awards “for the first time in my life.” She then flexed her strong biceps and said, “Gunnar Peterson [her trainer] here…But cake over here [pointing to her torso].” Vergara worked hard to achieve her killer curves, but admitted that she treats herself too. We love an honest celebrity! It makes her seem more relatable—it really is all about moderation.
Most Classy Runners-Up: USA Women’s World Cup Team
Although Japan took the gold during a finals shoot-out, Team USA inspired a new generation of soccer fans with several come-from-behind wins earlier in the tournament and the way they took second place with grace. We were also introduced to some up-and-coming athletes. One standout? Hope Solo, with her amazing goalkeeping skills and inspiring muscles, which were later showcased on the cover of ESPN’s The Body Issue.
Best Free Fitness App: Nike Training Club
Sweat like a celebrity (Lea Michele), athlete (Shawn Johnson) or trainer (Ary Nunez, who puts Rihanna through the paces) during more than 85 custom routines contributed by these big names and more. You can even set your own soundtrack and share your successes with your pals on Twitter and Facebook! We find ourselves repeatedly tapping back to this app for the physical results and for the rewards we can earn for racking up workout minutes, including tips, recipes and more.
Most Popular Unisex Workout Trend: CrossFit
Everyone from Bob Harper to Jessica Biel has touted the powers of CrossFit, a strength and conditioning program that mixes resistance training, running and plyometrics in a high-intensity, efficient workout. Learn more about the sport and follow along as one of our readers tries it out in the March issue of FITNESS!

I love awards season just as much as the next girl, but sometimes big moments and celebs don’t get the attention they deserve. Check out Fitness Editor Jenna’s top picks, then read on to see my fit favorites from the last year, just in time for the Grammys on Sunday. Our final installment of picks will run the Friday before the Oscars, so stay tuned!
Best Fit Mom: Jessica Alba
2011 was the year of celebrity pregnancies, and we loved watching many moms-to-be keep up their fitness routine throughout pregnancy. Alba had an amazing baby bounce-back, giving birth to second daughter Haven and rocking the Golden Globes’ red carpet a mere five months later. Other mommy makeovers we love: January Jones, Kate Hudson and Mariah Carey.
Strongest Star in the Face of Adversity: Giuliana Rancic
The beautiful co-host of E! News and Live From the Red Carpet has faced multiple health issues—from infertility struggles to her breast cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgeries—but remained strong and never shied away from the cameras. We sat down with Rancic at a Glade Expressions Dinner Party in January, when she told us that her treatment was a success and that she’s healthy and happy to be back at work. We at FITNESS are extremely impressed and inspired by her optimistic, open outlook on life after all she’s endured.
Best Celeb Slimdown: Ricki Lake
After a rollercoaster of weight loss and gain over the years, Lake seems to have finally nailed down the secret to shedding pounds and keeping it off. Her perfect fit? Taking on the challenge of serious competitor on Dancing with the Stars. A consistent front-runner on the show’s 13th season, Lake tangoed, salsa-d and cha-cha-ed her way to the final three, dropping pounds along the way. She reportedly shed four dress sizes and is in amazing shape. Go, Ricki!
Best Save-Your-Skin Move: Indoor Tanning Banned in California
We’re big advocates in the fight against skin cancer, and research has proven that indoor tanning increases your chances of developing the deadly disease. California made huge strides when they prohibited minors from the salons (even if they have parental permission), and more states are considering similar moves. Even though attempts failed in four other states in 2011, our fingers are crossed that we’ll continue to take a step in the healthy direction!

In the spirit of award season and Sunday’s Golden Globes, here’s my list of fit-winners this year!
Workout Trend That’s Taking Over The World: SoulCycle
The cult-following studio that’s been all the buzz this past year is the 6-year-old SoulCycle—the spinning sensation that rides to the beat of the music. With four studios in Manhattan, two in the Hamptons, another in Scarsdale, New York, and ones coming to Roslyn, Long Island and Greenwich, Connecticut, get ready for the spinning boutique of the century to take over the world, literally. Opening next month in West Hollywood, California—with locations following in Brentwood and beyond—this A-list favorite workout (Katie Holmes, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kelly Ripa and Alec Baldwin are all staples on the saddle) just keeps getting bigger..and better.
Featuring over seven daily sessions in all locations, plus regular fun-themed rides—Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, even Twilight Breaking Dawn cycle-parties—this studio is not only a 500-plus calorie dropping workout, it’s the place. to. be. on any day of the week. (Where else is there a waiting list for 6 a.m. workouts?)The captivating playlists plus theatrical performances by instructors who push you through sprints, hill climbs and strengthen-until-you-fatigue dumbbell sessions makes SoulCycle the workout of the year.
Stay tuned for much more happenings, like the special launch of this month’s limited edition Swarvoski crystal (1,650 of them jewels) encrusted iPhone cases, designed by the Villency Design Group. Available at studio locations and soul-cycle.com, the $250 price tag won’t keep even the loyalist fans away. Can’t make it to a studio? Get some soul from the comfort of your very own home with the spring 2012 cheery yellow SoulCycle-branded spinning bike. See, what’d I tell you? This workout is taking over the world, and we’re totally, totally psyched about it.
Best Collaboration:Jillian Michaels & K-Swiss
The former Biggest Loser trainer and The Doctors contributor, teamed up with K-Swiss a year ago and since then she’s taken over everyone’s sweat-sessions through totally awesome K-Swiss sneakers, tanks, sweats and apparel that will make you look just like her (if only her abs came included). My favorites were the JM for K-Swiss tanks that read “Saddlebags Suck” (got lots of looks walking through Equinox with that one) and one with her famous mantra “Blow Your Body’s Mind”. With the start of the new year, resolutions, and post-holiday shape-ups comes the launch of Jillian and K-Swiss’ “The Party’s Over” ad campaign with Lady Foot Locker. (It’s one of those rare times we’ll see this little lady all glammed out like it’s time for the ball circa 1950.) TV’s favorite trainer may no longer grace us on Tuesday nights, but we can use her for motivation every time we lace up with the K-Swiss Blade-Max shoes. Check out K-Swiss and Lady Foot Locker’s Facebook pages for exclusive videos from Jillian—workout tips and more never stop coming from our pint-sized workout queen.
