We love when fashion and fitness join forces, so we were especially excited to get sweaty at the Pink Pony Ride hosted by our friends at Ralph Lauren and SoulCycle. Ralph Lauren generously donated the cost of each attendee’s ride to the Pink Pony Fund of the Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation, which benefits cancer care and prevention, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Two of our favorite things coming together in one place for a good cause= one super inspiring night!
Pink Pony’s mission is to reduce disparities in cancer care in medically underserved communities, and ensure that treatment is available at an earlier, more curable stage. The Pink Pony Fund is internationally recognized (currently in 20 countries!) and by donating 25 percent of the purchase price from each Pink Pony product sold in the U.S. (shop the collection here…we’re totally loving these sweatpants!), the initiative has been able to support programs for screening, early diagnosis, treatment, research and patient navigation.
And the best part, Mr. Lauren (as in the Ralph Lauren), is totally hands on with this project.
“Over 20 years ago, I lost a good friend to cancer, and I promised that I would do my best to fight the disease that took her life. Watching the incredible progress we have made—to not only raise money to fight cancer but also to educate and support people, particularly those in underserved communities, navigate the sometimes isolating experience of patient treatment—is the greatest gift I could ever receive.”

With the craziness of New York Fashion Week behind us, we have to admit, we’re feeling a bit overwhelmed. We saw Spring ’14 walk the runways while wearing our Summer ’13 wardrobe and prepping for Winter ’14 in the office. If you’re confused, just imagine how we feel! Our heads are spinning with thoughts of summer dresses and winter whites. But hey, it’s all about living in the present, right? So we’re taking a step back to enjoy this season’s top trends. And you can too, with a few of our tips on how to look your best this fall.
The Look: Slouchy Pants
To master this tricky trend, you want to make sure you have a balanced silhouette. Instead of hiding your trouble spots – too much fabric on top can actually make you look bigger than you really are – the key is to wear a form-fitting top to offset your billowy pants. Three pairs we’re crushing on: Elizabeth & James, Vince, and Robert Rodriguez
The Look: Military
Camo might be our favorite trend this season, and we’re totally digging structured military style jackets. In order to make it work though, you can’t go into military overload. Camo on camo? Too much. Stick to one standout piece and keep the rest of your look simple. Fatigues that we’re loving: J.Crew, Gap, Monrow
The Look: Grunge-Inspired Boots
This fall we’re channeling our inner ’90s girl and shopping for grunge-inspired boots. We like the idea of pairing such a rough-around-the-edges style with something a little unpredictable, so try a girly dress or skirt. Mixing-and-matching these styles gives you the edge you desire, while still keeping a little girly mystery. Styles we’re stocking up on: Ash Footwear, Lucky Brand, Matt Bernson
And if you haven’t seen our story on how to style jackets this fall, be sure to check that out here!

Hut, hut, hike! From nailgating to tailgating, we think we’ve kicked football season off the right way. But we want to show you how to showcase your team spirit and still look super cute, without looking like you’ve raided your boyfriend’s closet. Leave that oversized, shapeless jersey at home, and show up to your Sunday Funday hotspot wearing your team’s colors in a more – dare we say – fashion-forward way.
After attending the Junk Food Vintage NFL fashion show, which was curated by Kristen Cavallari, (none of the pieces that walked the runway will be available for purchase, but we’re totally inspired by the cute jersey dresses, and leather sleeve crop tops!), and seeing this ad while watching the games last Sunday, we put together a little round up of what we’ll be sporting when we hit the stands to watch our teams kick butt this season.
- Pair a loose tank with a leather jacket and your fave worn-in jeans (cuffed at the bottom!) for a laid-back but edgy look. (Junkfood Touch Down tank, $30)
- Knot up a v-neck tee (that sort of resembles a jersey), and score some major points with your man as you rock his team’s colors at your next tailgate. (Nike Fan tee, $45)
- Show off those abs (you’ve worked hard for ‘em!) with a sporty crop top. For an unexpected look, style it with a flirty skirt like this one. (Victoria’s Secret Pink Cropped Athletic tee, $50)
- Layer a baseball-style sweater under a vest for those chilly SNF games! (Touch by Alyssa Milano Fan for Life sweater, $75)
- Are you a comfy-casual, watch-the-game-from-your-couch sort of girl? Throw on a cozy rugby shirt with your go-to leggings. Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you have to look like you rolled out of bed! (NFL Shop Shabby Rugby tee, $36)
- For those days when your hair just won’t cooperate, a jazzy baseball cap will have you covered. (Victoria’s Secret Pink Sequin baseball hat, $40)

The girl can sing, we know that for sure, but we also know that Alicia Keys has creative talent in the shoe designer department. Her third collaboration with Reebok Classic hit stores this month, and Alicia is helping bring some serious height to her favorite sneaks this time around. “The Freestyle is my shoe; it has always been and always will be my favorite sneaker. So for me to be able to update it with a wedge and give it a totally new look and feel, while still keeping the traditional look of the sneaker, has been an honor and really exciting.”
The Fall ’13 Reebok Classic X Alicia Keys collection will see two new sneaker wedge styles, the Freestyle Hi wedge and the A.Keys wedge. The A.Keys wedge (a fusion of the Freestyle and Chi-Kaze) will be available in four different color ways, all featuring chic details like luxe leather, heavy canvas, and crocodile embossing–nothing short of glam, that’s for sure. And for a price point at under $100, you’ll want to grab a pair in every color. As serious sneaker wedge fans, we’re definitely going to be scooping some up!
For a look at Alicia and her new Reebok Classics collection, check out this behind-the-scenes video. If you didn’t already love Alicia Keys, you’ll be sure to have a little girl crush after this! How cute is she?

Think back to your high school years, specifically the last few days of summer, right before the first day of school. If they were anything like mine, they were spent soaking up as much sun as possible and finding the perfect back-to-school outfit. This meant multiple trips to the mall, inevitably driving my mother (and her bank account) insane.
Fast-forward way too many years, and I still get that giddy feeling come September. There are few things better than back-to-school shopping, no matter how old you are, and while I’m sad to see summer go, I’m welcoming the fall with semi-open arms (I’m still pretty reluctant to trade my bikini-clad body for cable knits…just sayin’).
I’ve got tons of things on my fall wish list, but at the top in big bold letters is a NEW BAG. And by bag, I really mean backpack. Yes, you heard me right: I want a backpack. They’re making a comeback (no pun intended), and everyone from Marni to Madewell is on board. I’ve pulled together some of my favorites, and you can bet your bottom dollar that I’ll be sporting one at some point this fall – so long as my mom and her bank account want to help me re-live my back-to-school shopping days!

When you add tennis superstar Venus Williams and Flywheel Sports together, what do you get? A night filled with fun, fashion and Spinning, duh! I had the opportunity to join FlyWheel’s co-founder, Ruth Zuckerman, for a special ride with Venus to kick off the Fall 2013 collection from EleVen by Venus, sold at select FlyWheel locations (Chicago, Charlotte, Seattle and NYC, to be exact!). I was also lucky enough to sit down with Venus and pick her brain about fashion, food (apparently we both share a love for marshmallows!) and her life as a tennis star. Talk about a “pinch me” moment!
I work in the fashion department at FITNESS, so I’m super familiar with your line EleVen (we featured a tie dye version of this skirt in our July/Aug issue!), and think you and your team of designers are doing a great job. What inspires you when designing new looks? I really think that inspiration comes from within and that’s what makes the line a little bit different. I try to design pieces that are different, fun and bright – things that are really me – but not too different because you don’t want to step too far away from your roots, you know? We want the line to be relatable, so we’re always looking to find a happy medium. I want people to see my clothes and say, “Wow, that’s so exciting!”
And exciting it is! The new collection especially. I love the floral prints and electric color pallet. Are you going to wear any of these pieces to the U.S. Open?
I’ll be wearing the Rose Floral tennis dress.
Super cute! Definitely makes me want to get out on the tennis court and play!
Exactly! I want to inspire people to live a healthy life. Give them a little extra motivation to get out there and exercise.
Speaking of healthy, what’s your go-to snack, whether you’re on the go or heading into a big match?
To be honest, I’m not a big snacker. I’m into green juice and smoothies, so I usually reach for something like that.
Well that explains why you look so awesome! But seriously, any splurge snacks? There’s gotta be something…
Marshmallows! I love marshmallows. Those are a weakness, so I allow myself to splurge once in a while.
A girl after my own heart! So you’re about to go to a match, you’re dressed to the nines in your cute tennis clothes; you’ve drank a smoothie. What’s next? Any special rituals that we should know about?
I don’t have any crazy rituals. I’m the most relaxed person before a match. Probably too laid back. I’m always running late! People are pushing me to go and I’m like, “Wait, where’s my racquet?!”

We hate to be those people, but we’ve just come to the realization that our beloved summer nights are numbered. Being the beach bums that we are, we’re not ready to ditch our bikinis and flip-flops yet, so we’ve taken to wearing our comfies on the beach when the sun starts to set and the salty air gets breezy.
But comfy doesn’t have to be frumpy. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite sweatshirts for you to keep warm in for those last few bonfires on the beach. All you have to do is throw one on over your favorite bikini (we’re obsessed with everything L*Space), and pair with denim cutoffs, for the perfect low maintenance, beachy-chic look.

It’s no surprise that the editors at FITNESS are race junkies. We’ve tackled marathons, gotten our Color Run on, and killed a few triathlons. One thing we hadn’t mastered though – until last month, that is – was mud runs. They’re a bit daunting, totally hardcore and um, hello, dirty! But since we’re not ones to shy away from a challenge, or a little mud, we decided to dive head first into a pit of muddy water (seriously, though), and take on a Rugged Manic course.
Even though we’re still scrubbing mud off of our bodies, trust us when we tell you it was a blast. We scaled nine-foot walls, crawled under barbed wire and hurdled some serious flames. And if that doesn’t sound like enough of a challenge for you, there were 17 other obstacles that totally tested our limits. If we thought we were finishing that race unscathed, we were wrong (we had a few minor cuts, bumps and bruises). But we did come out faster, stronger and just a tad muddier.
Throwing away your clothes and sneaks after a race like that is pretty much a given, so when planning our race day attire, we kind of panicked. Can you blame us for being attached to our spandex?!
Our solution? Buy super cheap pieces that we’d be okay tossing after the finish line. We turned to our trusty pals at Forever21 (C9 by Champion for Target is another great, affordable option!) and picked out pieces that would make us look fierce on the course: a white tank so we could see how muddy we got (take before and after pics!); a camouflage bra to channel our inner tough girls; and some black booty shorts because if you’ve got it, why not flaunt it?
As for your treasured sneaks? Leave the good pair at home and wear old ones. Some race organizations (Rugged Maniac is one of them!) will even clean up and donate the sneakers that people get rid of, which we think is totally awesome!
Now that we’ve tested the (muddy) waters, we’re completely hooked on getting our dirty-girl on. With mud runs taking the country by storm, there are tons to choose from, and we’ve already got one in the line-up for the fall. Call us crazy, but mud can totally be sexy.
If you’re as mud run-crazed as we are, tell us about your favorite courses. We’d love to check them out!

Obsession is an understatement when it comes to Shark Week. We wait all summer long for a week full of nail biting deep sea adventures, views from the shark cam and gruesome attacks. If it were up to us, every week would be #SharkWeek! Sadly though, we’ll soon have to bid adieu to Jaws and Bruce for another year, and hope that we’ll be able to hop onto our paddle boards and get back in the open water without running into any unwanted fins. Eek!
In case you’re crazy about sharks, too, and need a fix after all of the hype settles down, we rounded up some of our favorite shark-themed accessories. Accessorize at your own risk:

True story: I was out for a run last week when a friend of mine saw me run by his apartment. He sent a text saying, “Stop! Turn around! Come hang out!” Cue the girly-girl rant in my head, “Oh gosh, I can’t believe he just saw me running. I’m a sweaty mess. This is so embarrassing. I can’t go over there!” But since I suffer from a small case of FOMO (c’mon ladies, admit it, you do too!), I couldn’t resist the invite. So after finishing my loop, I ran back to his pad, sweaty mess and all. As I walked in, my friend said, “You look super official. Like a sponsored athlete or something. What should I be wearing so can I look as cool as you when I run?”
At first I thought he was being facetious, being that I was decked out in neon shorts, neon sneaks and a tank that had neon lettering (A little obnoxious? Maybe), but he was serious. And I gladly took the compliment.
Now to the point of my story: I get asked about running gear a lot; specifically sneakers. My job as the Fashion Assistant here at FITNESS lends me the title of “sneaker expert” amongst my friends. I know which shoes are the best for marathon training (see my pick below!), which brands have the best minimalist styles, and which sneakers are the coolest each season.
All tech-talk aside, if the shoes aren’t cute, we’re not buying them. Right? So from a fashionable stance, these are my fave running sneakers for logging miles this summer:
Saucony Kinvara 4: These shoes are my obsession. Seriously, they’re that good. I’ve trained for countless half-marathons in Kinvaras, and I’ve turned lots of runners into Kinvara fans (Saucony, you can thank me later). I love the explosion of hot pink and neon yellow on my newest pair, and feel pretty awesome running down the streets of my hood. You might need sunglasses to protect your eyes from the brightness. #justsayin
Nike Air Pegasus 30+: So we’ve seen the Free and become fans of the Fly Knit, but this Nike style should totally be on your radar, too. I’m a sucker for a good throwback, and these kicks have a serious old school vibe. And when you’re done running, you can rock them with a cool pair of boyfriend jeans and a tee for a laid back look on the weekend.
New Balance Minimus Hi-Rez: Space age shoes? Sure, why not? These awesome weightless sneaks have a futuristic feel that will be sure to make people look twice as you run by, and not in a bad way. Plus, you get the minimalist feel, without going totally barefoot. It’s a win-win situation, people!
Now you tell us: What’s your sneaker of choice?
