Insanity’s Shaun T Has ZERO Excuses

You’ve probably seen this guy before, kicking major butt in infomercials and on daytime talk shows (he’s Dr. Oz-approved!)—or maybe you’ve cleared your living room furniture out of the way to workout with the fitness legend, himself. Regardless, one thing is for sure: Shaun T is insane. In an amazing, fat-blasting way.

We felt the Insanity burn first-hand, thanks to Shaun T’s Max Interval Training techniques, at a recent POWERADE ZERO Excuses event. Power Jumps, sprints and a glimpse of Shaun T’s glistening 6-pack had us echoing the lyrics of one of the Rihanna workout tracks, “Where have you been all my life?” After toweling off our sweat, we sat down with Shaun T to talk about fitness fuel, recovery and his gym bag essentials. Here’s what we learned from the personal trainer/choreographer:

It’s all about the finish. Any Insanity or Asylum fan will tell you that Shaun T’s Beachbody workouts are tough. Instead of giving in to those aching muscles, focus on ending your workout on a high note. “How you finish your workout is how you’ll start the next one,” Shaun T reminded us throughout the class. “All you have to say is I can do this.” Fight through that last set for future fab results!

Work out when it works for you. “For me, I always find it better to work out when I’m most motivated,” said Shaun T. “Working out in the morning feels great because it starts me off on the right track.” Find your best performance time, schedule exercise accordingly and stick with it! After completing his 60-day challenge, Shaun T suggests taking about two weeks of recovery for ultimate toning.

Boost your energy. To give yourself the most fit advantage, Shaun T suggests fueling up with five meals a day, especially when increasing your training. The more fit you are, the more energy your body needs! Shaun T enjoys granola and peanut butter or cinnamon oatmeal in the morning, 30-45 minutes before exercising.

Gym bag must-haves. Shaun T needs more than the typical towel, water and sports drink for a successful sweat sesh. Wrist sweatbands, Energy and Endurance Formula, ChapStick, two extra shirts and a computer—to follow and log workouts—are all considered his essentials. His most random but necessary item? Mints! “People always want to talk up close after I workout,” Shaun T joked.

Training with the stars. It seems like Shaun T has done it all – theater, television the big screen, shaping up our favorite celebs. The list goes on and on so what’s next? “In my 20s I did a lot of the races. I did marathons, I did half marathons,” he said. “As I get older, it’s about just really concentrating on being functional and making sure the form is good…to get the best results for my muscles.” With that being said, he is always willing to try something different like, most recently, tennis. “I’m never starstruck because like, it’s just not my personality. But Serena Williams, oh my God! I would love to work with her.”

    I have Insanity and am ashamed to say that I have yet to complete the entire 60 days. I always make it to about the two week mark and then I miss a day for whatever reason and feel like I have to start over. I will complete it! I have made this a personal goal for myself. I have friends that have completed the 60 days and they look fantastic!

    I love, love, love Insanity.  I alternate every other day with P90X and it makes me feel very strong and empowered.  I actually use some of his combinations and interval principles in my interval blast class that I teach.

    I totally agree with combining P90X with this workout. I did P90X last year and did Insanity this summer and loved it but only made it through 56 of the 60 days because I developed a knee and back injury from the repetitive stress that I feel could have been avoided for me if I had done some type of muscle building/strengthening program along with it. I built up great endurance but I am very sad because I have not been able to workout since.

    Insanity and the Asylum are my soul mate workouts!! LOVE them.  How could you not?!  You get 30-60 days with Shaun T ;) and you get crazy sick results FAST!  Anxiously awaiting the release of Aslyum Vol. 2 in a few weeks. I’ve done 2 live workouts with Shaun.  He’s even MORE amazing (and brutal, haha) in person!  But it’s because of Insanity I gained my life and confidence back. For that reason, I became a Coach for Beachbody so I could pay it forward!

    Yeah I am 48 and tried insanity . I love the sweat and feel great after. Wish I could do it for 60 days but right now I am doing it twice per week.

    I’m on my third round of Insanity and LOVING IT! I am 41, mother of two and never looked so good! I particularly like the insane abs and cardio abs workouts which gave me my six-pack :)

     Why do I feel SO motivated after reading this post!?  I’d actually never heard of this before, but it looks like the results are amazing.  And it is so intense that he recommends taking a two week break after completing the 60 day routine?  This sounds like something that I should try!

    Insanity and Asylum work, especially for busy parents since you can squeeze in your workout in usually under 45 minutes.  I recently injured a chest muscle so instead of doing the moving pushups, I jump rope and so on.

    Hi there!!I love Shaun T workouts but there is one thing I don”t understand in his program.After the warm up ,sometimes he does some stretching exercises.Stretching before and workout causes muscle laxity and the joints are more prone to injuries.Just out of curiosity,can any one answer me?Thank you so much for your time!

    I’m on my third round – Day 40 and have lost 70lbs and am getting ripped. It’s so much more than a kick ass workout – it’s transforming. I know that word is overused these days, but there you have it. When you try it – and finish it – you’ll know EXACTLY what I mean. Shaun T. is the real deal – inside and out – you know he cares and walks the talk.
