Meet the Trainer: Keoni Hudoba of Drenched!

Nothing spreads faster through word of mouth in the fitness industry than the hot new trainer with a killer workout. And when I heard some chatter about Keoni Hudoba of Keoni Kinetics and his super hot routine I had to be in on the action. I checked out Keoni's majorly popular Drenched class, taught at 24 Hour Fitness in New York City, and was surprised to see about 60—yes, 60—men and women waiting to enter the studio for his post-work class. After catching a glimpse of the man of the hour I realized not only were women flocking to this sold-out session for the kickbutt workout, but Keoni is pretty sweet on the eyes too. I was hooked.

The 60-minute high-intensity (more like turbo-intensity!) class combines martial arts and plyometrics and feels a bit like a massive choreographed dance once you get the hang of it. By the end of the class I was drenched—hence the moniker—and my muscles were on fire! Who knew working out could be so fun? You’re from Hawaii—Aloha! What was it like growing up there? I think it's the best place on Earth! What’s something about Hawaii that tourists don’t know?

Growing up in Hawaii was the most amazing experience. My mother is Hawaiian and my father is Polish. I love anything and everything to do with the outdoors, beach, island lifestyle, and yes I LOVE spam ( don't tell my clients;)). Something about Hawaii that many tourists misconceive is that we live in huts [LOL], 'til this day I get asked this.

You were overweight growing up, how did that affect your ability to enjoy surfing, biking and all the outdoor activities that Hawaii has to offer?
I was overweight, but to be honest I never let it effect my love for the outdoors, other than wearing a t-shirt on the beach. That has since changed!

What’s the one thing your trainer taught you that’s never left you?
Being overweight was the biggest blessing and curse of my life. I reached my highest highs and my lowest lows while overweight and the transformation to follow. It taught me that if you set your mind to it anything is possible. My trainer taught me that everyone has cheat days; just acknowledge them.

Where did you see life after Hawaii?
Beyond living in Hawaii I thought my only passion was the arts, singing, playing piano, performing. I saw myself performing in huge venues and for tons of audience members. After I was blessed with my transformation, I was doing exactly that. Performing for Disney, Royal Caribbean etc. One day I woke up and asked myself what brought me to this position in my life, and it was fitness. It had changed my life in such a positive way and I knew I had to be involved in some way shape or form in the fitness industry. Now I am here, in the best city in the world, NYC, doing what I love on a different stage.

Ok, some might say you’re the mirror version of a runway model with washboard abs. Share your tricks with us.
I don't know about all that ;) but mahalo! I work out daily 2 hours for myself, on top of teaching an average of 4 hours a day. I LOVE food and would much rather eat anything I want (especially sweet treats) and work it off. Allow yourself rewards!

I know your passion and mission is to help inspire, motivate and change someone else’s life. Do you think a trainer who was formerly overweight has a better, or more unique, perspective of weight loss? What are your thoughts on the trainer who gained then lost weight for his book Fit 2 Fat 2 Fit?
What I do know is I come from a place on compassion and passion because of my transformation. I know anything is possible and still til this day work at achieving my own personal goals. I have read Fit 2 Fat 2 Fit, I think it is an amazing accomplishment what he has done, to relate to his clients. Congrats.

Do you have days where you just don’t feel like working out?
I do, we all do. But I pick myself up, put on some amazing music and get my ass to the gym!

Why do you think people are so drawn to your classes at Barry’s Bootcamp and 24 Hour Fitness?
I am honestly just so blessed and honored that so many people are devotees and look to me to better their life and reach their goals. It is such a privilege to be in the presence of all these amazing athletes of all shapes and sizes. True Inspiration!

What’s your favorite workout? The one you’ll do without dragging your feet across the floor to make yourself get outta bed and go.
Honestly my personal favorite is my own method, DRENCHED. I do the entire class with my athletes and I LOVE it, it is my creation, my passion, my baby.

What’s your workout hell?
My workout hell is working out legs. Mahalo to my mom and dad for blessing me with big legs (or maybe to being heavy and my legs just stayed).

What are the must-haves in your gym bag?
The must haves in my Under Armour Gym bag, and my spin shoes, a clean set of UA Coldblack shorts and shirt, and my headphones!

What’s your favorite NYC moment since moving here?
I have favorite moments everyday in NYC, I, on a regular basis wake up , leave my apartment and catch myself saying 'I LIVE IN NYC!'

When you’re not training or teaching, what nook in NYC can we find you?
My favorite little spot in NYC is a secret: CITY CAKES on 18th between 7th and 8th, salted caramel cupcakes as a reward for hard work.

What’s the one move every woman should be doing?
The one move that every women should be doing is a Turkish Deadlift with body weight or a light weight. Full body!

What's your favorite song on a playlist from your class?
I am in LOVE with LP Levitator for the cool down.

What's your motivational mantra?
"Nothing is IMPOSSIBLE the word itself says I'M POSSIBLE."

What's your biggest career accomplishment?
I have to say being in FITNESS MAGAZINE has been right up there.

I hear a couple got engaged during one of your classes. Some would say that says a lot about you that they wanted to share this special moment with you. Any other inspiring stories about your clients?
I have inspiring stories all the time right in front of my eyes. My clients and students change in front of my eyes for the better. The confidence that they get when they reach their goals in my classes is the biggest compliment.

Celeb whose career you’d like to revitalize:
I would have loved to give this honor to Whitney Houston.

When can women across America buy a Drenched DVD?
I was wondering the same thing! I will be presenting at the ECA World Fitness Convention in February in NYC. I am hoping soon after that.
