If this month’s star behind our “Meet The Trainer” is any indication of the hot body you could possess for summer, then I’m sure you’ll be hittin’ the floor with this workout after you read this. Sylwia Wisenberg is the founder of Tonique Fitness and the creator of Exercise TV’s most popular workouts—plus a mother of two young adorable kids. (Yes moms can have hot bodies!) She’s on a mission to make every woman feel and look her sexiest. And with workouts like “Hot Legs” (see page 56 of our June issue), I think she’s making her mark. Read on to find out a little more about our trainer of the month:
I’m writing a movie about your life, tell me the plot:
It would be the story of a 17-year-old girl leaving her country, Poland, in order to follow her dream of exploring the world and finding her ultimate passion. After traveling and studying in many different countries, she finally arrives on the Upper East Side of NYC with only one suitcase. Soon after, she quits her job in finance and searches for things that will make her happy everyday and forever. She dabbles in fashion, food and wine, but most importantly, fitness. After two years, she decides to follow her passion for fitness and movement. It is NYC that gives her the opportunity to express herself, the confidence to use her creativity and to be herself.
Wow—what a story. You’re a renaissance woman! So why the love for fitness?
Fitness is my oxygen and my water, and often it is also my shrink. I did gymnastics for nine years, ran for my school track team and danced literally whenever I found the opportunity. I am now living my dream of helping women feel fabulous! I love what I do. It’s not a job, it’s my mission to make a change and impact in women’s lives by movement.
How did Tonique Fitness come about?
When I got pregnant, my goal was to prove everyone wrong who had told me that once you have a child your body falls apart and loses its firmness and shape. I designed a program for myself that brought amazing results, and shared it with other women who were unhappy about the way they felt and looked. After seeing great results on them, I decided to share the workout with other women by producing my first DVD, Tonique Premier. It was a great success, and Tonique grew organically. I take my responsibility to deliver quality and affordable workouts seriously. I encourage women to have their “me time.” I want women to feel fit, firm, confident and sexy! Tonique celebrates each and every woman!
What do you consider to be the greatest accomplishment in your career so far?
Having a significant impact on thousands of women’s lives and their perfectly sculpted butts [chuckling].

What’s a typical day like for you?
I wake up early and go to bed too late. I leave home in my workout clothes (and often stay in the for the whole day), drop off my children at school and start Tonique class by 9.30 a.m. After the workout, I usually do errands or change and go to meetings for my brand. Around 6 p.m., I prepare dinner for my family. I love to cook, and it relaxes me. Then, I help with homework and play and dance with my children. After the kids go to sleep, the second part of my day begins: I work and create new moves for my classes and videos. On weekends, my husband and I go out for dinner, and to the theatre or other events here in the city. I try to get good night’s sleep, but it seems impossible.
I’m impressed! So, who would you want to portray you in a movie?
Cate Blanchett—she could play me just perfect I suspect. There is something unusual and magnetic about her and that’s how I see myself!
Since knowing you, I can see that! Who can write the movie for us now (haha!)? So if you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing?
I would be a dancer. I love it, and when I hit the dance floor, I forget about everything else and can dance for hours.
What’s your favorite body part to work out—and your least favorite?
Butt and legs are my obsession, can’t you tell? I absolutely want every woman to have firm and defined legs, and super round and sculpted glutes. Abs are my least favorite. I believe if you engage your core in every squat and lunge, during dancing and running, and most of all, if you walk holding your stomach in at all times, you don’t need to do hundreds of abdominal exercises.
I’ll remember that one! What’s one thing every fit-conscious woman should have?
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would you pick?
I love pistachios and almonds.
Name your top three guilty pleasures.
Pistachio ice cream from L’Arte Del Gelato, triple cream goat cheese and aged Burgundy. Mmm!
What’s your favorite restaurant in NYC? Favorite place outdoors to exercise?
The Gramercy Tavern hands down because the food is fresh and delicious. And I like to exercise near the water—water calms me down and it brings great inspiration to my workouts. So in NYC, along the West Side Highway and in the Hamptons, near the ocean in Amagansett.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I really want to travel around the world and educate young girls about the importance of education and boosting their self esteem and confidence through movement. I want to educate people about healthy eating without dieting or cleanses, since balance is what counts. I see myself creating more DVDs, having my own television show and making sure that I can project positive energy onto others, and help even more women to feel fabulous!
What’s coming up next for you?
I am working on new DVDs which I plan to release very soon. I am shooting a second season of webisodes for Tonique Woman (www.toniquewoman.com). I’m working on a few show ideas and expanding Tonique to Europe, especially Poland where I’m from. Polish women need to move more!
